Fun Home (subtitled A Family Tragicomic) is a graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, author of the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. It chronicles the author's childhood and youth in rural Pennsylvania, USA, focusing on her complex relationship with her father. The book addresses themes of sexual orientation, gender roles, suicide, dysfunctional family life, and the role of literature in understanding oneself and one's family. Writing and illustrating Fun Home took seven years, in part because of Bechdel's laborious artistic process, which includes photographing herself in poses for each human figure. In The New York Times Sunday Book Review, Sean Wilsey called it "a pioneering work, pushing two genres (comics and memoir) in multiple new directions."

Bildungsroman in drawings. She's kinda blue about her dad who is restoring the fabulous Victorian and wrecking the family. Gothic elements align it quite literally with the Adams family but Bechdel's acerbic pen uncurls the scrollwork be decking every eave. Secrets in knee walls and armoires until both dad and daughter emerge from closet. Her frames are full of clues and detail, the Fatal Sunbeam bread, the manly torsos bared for yard work ... Secrets in knee walls and armoires until both dad and daughter emerge from closet. Her frames are full of clues and detail, the Fatal Sunbeam bread, the manly torsos bared for yard work ... And what else with the the young male babysitters her father prefers? Silhouettes on the sea foam backgrounds and topo maps of the ridged Allegheny plateau give the work an individual texture. Bechdel can draw, write, think and feel, nailing spiritual travail in forms she commands with an assurance that belies the teen POV of the tale. Remarkable.
