Despite the very unusual and interesting historical background - Egypt as a province of the Byzantine Empire in the VI century - Christian Jacq does not succeed to captivate the reader. His narrative is poor of details, boring and tendentious. In this book, his passionate defense of the ancient Egyptian religion and traditions comes to its height, to the point that the descriptions of the rituals and traditions become annoying. Anyway, if you search for a dynamic and catchy story don't read this.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This is not one of those books that you can read quickly. It also helps if you're interested in magic, especially of the Egyptian variety, and you know something about Ancient Egypt. The ending is sad, but not unexpected, except for Philae being made into a church. I had wondered how Jacq was going to account for the fact that Philae still exists today, moved piece by piece so that the Aswan dam didn't swallow it whole.

Quite intriguing! I'M a history buff and this book has vetted my interest in Egyptian civilization and byzantine conquest of Egypt. The narration flagged towards the end.
