An anthology near and dear to my heart, because it contains many of the artists that I first cut my comix teeth on. Some favorites from this mix: Lynda Barry; Robert Crumb; Krystine Kryttre; Jaime Hernandez; Mark Beyer; Kim Deitch; Paul Chadwick; Richard Sala; Dori Seda; and Joyce Farmer. It's pretty clear to me the only reason I bought this book was for the Hernandez Bros. signatures in my edition. Otherwise, it's a pretty bland reprint collection from indie comics writer-artists of the 80s. Only one piece is new to this volume, Roz Chast's amusing but forgettable one-pager 'The Willful Little Pencil.' The title is a bit of a misnomer, as I don't imagine these are the 'best comics' but rather a smattering of work from the best creators. Not a bad introduction to the indie comics scene back then(following volume one, of course), if you're new to it, but for someone who was reading alot of this stuff at the time it's fairly redundant.

This has Dan Clowes' Lloyd Llewellyn: Dementia Praecox in it and it is so fantastically twisted. Love. This has Dan Clowes' Lloyd Llewellyn: Dementia Praecox in it and it is so fantastically twisted. Love.
