You had me at Cleopatra, Stuart Gibbs. She is on my list of favorite people to read about in history. This book did not disappoint. First, I have to admit that I haven't read the other books in the series. It's a mistake not to read the others first because this adventure is truly tons of fun to read, and I can only imagine the rest of the series is a treat, too. Charlie just turned thirteen and has just discovered a huge clue to take her on her next search for an ancient treasure, which could mean huge trouble if it falls into the wrong hands. She's located an Egyptian stone tablet, which holds the secret to the power Cleopatra hoped to entrust her own son with before Octavian's victory. So far, no one seems to suspect what the tablet truly hides, but Charlie knows exactly how to decipher the clues. But even with her amazing intelligence, wit and skills, time's against her as more and more organizations realize she's on a new hunt. Action, excitement, tension, and clever deduction make this an exciting read, which flows seamlessly from beginning to end. The fast pace keeps the reader on their toes, never leaving even a smidgen of space for boredom to seep in. Charlie races around the world, going from one exotic location to the next. Each one carries cultural flair and a few details to highlight the atmosphere, and yet, there's never a load of descriptions to slow things down, either. It's high-action the entire way through, and that with more than a handful of characters. Even each of these carries enough personality to make them intriguing, and each one harbors their own goals. While the action and plot twist this way and that with all sorts of unexpected moments and directions, the author manages to build in quite a bit of history, too. The first chapter with Cleopatra grabs and puts her in a more natural light than is often found in literature. The historical tidbits, which Charlie uses to pull the clues together, are as interesting as the places she visits. Throw in the illustrations of the clues she discovers, and it's more than intriguing mix. This is sold for ages ten and up, and the subject matter does work well with the upper middle grade range and beyond. Sensitive readers might find some scenes a little harder, thanks to a few moments of violence...nothing over the top, but there are shootings and other harsher acts in a true, hardened spy world. For the average reader, it is tension pure and a gripping read. I received an ARC and was completely drawn in by this adventure.

She's managed to break away even from her half brother Dante and his coworker and love interest Milana, and has crashed a party in order to look at a tablet inscribed in Latin that may have clues from Cleopatra on it. It's owner isn't thrilled to find her in his private quarters, and even less thrilled after she chloroforms him and escapes. This is just the beginning of Charlie's adventures being chased by just about all of the secret service organizations around the world, who all want something from her. Since Charlie has money she has stolen from a company that stole her computer program, money is no object. When she meets up again with Dante and Milana, they follow the clues and find directions and objects that no one else in two thousand years has been able to process or find. These clues take them from Greece to Italy to New York, and Charlie seems to be unstoppable. Will she be able to find clues from all of the brilliant minds that have left them behind? N.B. I read this on the last day of state testing (which went on for almost a month), so was a little cranky. I usually love this series, and thought this would be particularly great since I've actually visited Greece and Italy, but I found myself being annoyed at Charlie and her methods, especially ditching her brother. Probably just jealous of all of the traveling she got to do! Strengths: Charlie has all of the qualities that many middle school students want-- autonomy from parents (who aren't dead, just unsupportive), unlimited money, super intelligence, awesome spy skills, and reason to travel the world. This is heavy on exciting chase scene, and the excitement rarely lets up. There are lots of people after Charlie and her knowledge, but she manages to constantly get the best of the bad guys. In this case, I was a fan of the bad guys being somewhat bumbling and definitely evil; while I appreciate a nuanced villain, Charlie is a more straight forward character. Her hunting down a college friend so she could get help from the girl's aunt was an interesting peek into her past. This was definitely a romp equal to or better than the first two books. It's hard to keep up that energy, but Gibbs does a great job. Weaknesses: There's a lot of really interesting and helpful history of the ancient world, so this would be fantastic for the fifteen high school students still studying Latin in the US (remember, I taught Latin a lifetime ago), but sometimes there were rather large chunks of it that slowed the story down. I also found myself wondering how long it would have taken Cleopatra to get all of her clues in far flung places, given the rate of travel during her time, and whether her children would have been able to figure out the clues AND do all of that traveling! What I really think: There's definitely at least one more adventure coming up, since Charlie mentions finding Isaac Newton's secrets, but I hope this series wraps up in five books. Any more than that, and it's tough to get readers to invest in longer series, even though the Spy School and Fun Jungle series are still going strong. They are the exceptions that makes the rule.

Charlie Thorne has become one of my favorite book characters! This is the 3rd book in the series, and each book is better than the last! Cleopatra is portrayed as a highly intelligent ruler instead of a. pretty face who married some other powerful guys. Several myths were dispelled in this book regarding Cleopatra and her family and life and I learned some Egyptian history I never knew before. The nonstop action in this book and the scrapes that Charlie finds herself in and barely gets herself out of make this a page-turner and nearly impossible to put down. I also like the movement of Dante and Milana's storyline. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to them and hoping Arthur Zell gets his own in the next book!

Charlie Thorne and the Curse of Cleopatra by Stuart Gibbs is book 3 in the Charlie Thorne series. This author is so talented, writing multiple series that captivate kids. This book is no exception. Here, you will find danger and intrigue and all set in Egypt. I adored everything about this book. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

While this ancient royal is often considered the beauty queen of the Nile - she was also a thinker for the ages - and the scavenger hunt she created to help her eldest son, Caesarion, uncover the mysterious item holding the key to her wealth and influence will take Charlie, the CIA, the Israeli Mossad, and the Egyptian Mukhabarat (as well as a ruthless Egyptian crime family) on a dangerous chase across the globe. Who will reach it first? It's anyone's guess in this fast-paced mystery. Fans of Stuart Gibbs who have already experienced Charlie's abilities in past adventures will continue to be thrilled by her trademark smarts and sarcasm - while also enjoying growing depth in this leading character. Readers who are new to the Charlie Thorne series will be able to grasp the storyline presented in Charlie Thorne and the Curse of Cleopatra, too, and are guaranteed to be grabbing the first books in the series to access the story's origin. I believe I once read that Stuart Gibbs has targeted this series for readers who are a little older than his Spy School, Space Case, and FunJungle fans. Action sequences involve more dangerous situations most would find appropriate for middle school readers that are typical of series like Alex Rider, City Spies, and I,Q. Students with an interest in ancient Egypt will immediately be drawn in through the prologue's backstory and the other ancient sites showcased as part of the action will continue to keep their interest. I was fascinated by the information Gibbs included about our calendar! Charlie Thorne may have found a kindred spirit in Cleopatra - and with a tease about another famous mystery to be solved, I'm excited to see what this series will offer next! So I will admit when I first started this series I wasn't a huge fan of Charlie Thorne, I mean it was really hard to believe that a 12 year old, who is like a super genius, could still 40 million dollars (there is a reason and you learn that in book 1) and now be a fugitive and be able to pretty much do about anything.  I thought book one was okay, wasn't a huge fan of book 2, but that is because I am not a fan of Charles Darwin, but I think I must be getting use to Charlie Thorne because I enjo So I will admit when I first started this series I wasn't a huge fan of Charlie Thorne, I mean it was really hard to believe that a 12 year old, who is like a super genius, could still 40 million dollars (there is a reason and you learn that in book 1) and now be a fugitive and be able to pretty much do about anything.  I thought book one was okay, wasn't a huge fan of book 2, but that is because I am not a fan of Charles Darwin, but I think I must be getting use to Charlie Thorne because I enjoyed this book but a lot more than the others. I have suspended my disbelief enough to just roll with it...lol. So there are things I can't talk about because it would spoil book one but basically Charlie is on the run from several different governments because of some information in her head from what happened in book one. One thing she did learn and what is the basis of this series is that Einstien learned about some information about a group of historical figures who have hidden something valuable. In this one the focus is on what Cleopatra hid and Charlie knows exactly where to find the first clue! (Of Course) So we start out in Egypt where she breaks into this mans house to get a rubbing off of a artifact and causes all sorts of chaos and gets even more people looking for her. Her half brother Dante works for the CIA and he and his partner are on Charlie's trail again but things are kind of getting changed at the CIA because of things that happened in previous books. They are getting a new boss and he is not so sure about this 12 year old girl and the information she has which causes some problems in this book. Meanwhile, Charlie, Dante and his partner (whose name escapes me) are off to follow these clues to try and find out what it is that Cleopatra hid, it takes them from Egypt, to Athens, to Rome and finally the US. Charlie it seems knows a lot about Cleopatra which helps them locate the clues that take them from one place to anthor it's really hard to believe this kid knows so much but it was still fun following her around. She is like a mini Robert Langdon from the Dan Brown books...lol. One thing I like about this series is that you get to learn a lot about the famous figure that the book is about. I like kids books that are informative and that is one of my favorite things about Stuart Gibbs books. I think if you have kids that love adventure books then they will definitly like the Charlie Thorne series.

This book is a stroke of genius. There are refreshing plot twists around every corner. It is almost perfectly historically accurate. Charlie Thorne’s genius is Stuart Gibbs’ genius. Many more new and exciting characters are introduced, all of them with fresh and interesting backstories. I find myself marveling at the small details that weave and intertwine into the story. In short, this was an amazing book (series), and you won’t want to miss it.

Third installment of a middle grade book. Main character is 13 year old Charlie who is a mathematical genius. Her intellect has led her to many valuable discoveries from past history and everyone is on her trail to steal those treasures. In this “episode” she is on the trail of the treasure of Cleopatra. Lots of adventure and thrilling chase scenes. Learning history has never been so exciting and fun. Would make a great movie. But why are there always snakes 🐍 🤔

Another fun, action-packed treasure hunt for Charlie Thorne! This new adventure is just as fun as the others she has been on. Don't tell the kids that there is just enough history involved in these books that they might learn something!
