The first thing that caught my attention making me want to read this book is the cover. Pretty fall colors, a black kitty, an idyllic lake.....the skull and crossbones. Definitely cozy style. A small town so peaceful and wonderful....until a dead body pops up. :)Gotta love cozies! Plus, Fall is my favorite time of the year, so I jumped right on this book. I somehow missed the second book in this series and didn't realize it until I got a bit into this book. Claws for Suspicion is the third book in the Catskills Pet Rescue series. It didn't harm my enjoyment of the book that I skipped the second book....not really any spoilers and I was easily able to follow the characters and plot. The basics: Kari Stuart is settling into her new business - an animal shelter called Serenity Sanctuary. But then her ex husband Charlie shows up, spouting nonsense about she owes him a rather large sum of money from lottery winnings. It gets even worse....Charlie turns up dead and Kari is the #1 suspect, of course. So much for serenity.... Enjoyable story! I'm definitely going to backtrack and read book 2. I like the characters, the setting and an animal shelter being part of the background of the plot. The story moves at a nice pace, and there is plenty of investigation and surprises. There aren't any intricate twists or huge reveals, but it was a fun, entertaining cozy! And the front cover is awesome! **I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing. Kari has no interest in giving Charlie anything, so she starts trying to figure out how to get him to go away. Then he dies, and his death looks like murder. The police view Kari as their prime suspect since she is the only one in town with a motive. Can Kari convince them that someone else killed Charlie? While the ex coming back to town isn’t a new plot element in a cozy mystery, Charlie’s motives and the complications are definitely fresh here. I did feel the plot stalled a bit before Charlie actually died, although it was setting up motives and suspects before it happened. Once it did, Kari followed a logical set of clues to the climax. I always appreciate how well things are laid out when I reach the end of the books in this series. I love Kari’s circle of friends, and it was wonderful to spend time with them again. The suspects fit wonderfully into the world. Naturally, there’s plenty of animal cuteness here as well. Fans of the series will be happy with this book, and if you haven’t started it yet, you’ll be happy you picked up one of the books. Read my full review at Carstairs Considers.

When I saw this one come up on Netgalley, I had to have it. I read the first one a few months ago and fell in love with the characters (especially Queeenie!) and the plots. What I really enjoyed about this one was learning more of Kari's backstory and more about what makes her tick (and, in this one, I think she learned more about what makes her tick) and that kind of character development is really what draws me into a series and this one handles it well. It was the plot that really shined in this one; it's always satisfying to see an odious character get his fatal comeuppance and the conclusion - so tragic! This one will probably stick with me awhile, so senseless and devastating. Another great entry into the Catskills Pet Rescue series and purr-fect for anyone who loves adorable cats, great characters and great plots.

He claims they were never divorced and he wants half of everything she owns. Even if it means taking over Serenity Sanctuary and the property it stands on. Kari is desperate to prove he’s lying but a murder occurs first and Kari is the number one suspect. Will she lose everything she worked so hard to build for herself? Kari’s friends are not about to let that happen. As the police focus on Kari as the culprit, Kari and her friends look elsewhere for a killer. This is the third book in the series and it has quickly become one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I love everything about it from the characters to the setting to the adorable animals (Queenie being the favorite, of course). The author has developed a cast of realistic characters who truly feel like old friends. Kari’s kitten, Queenie even has her own personality and an amazing ability to track down clues and bad guys. No, it’s not paranormal and Queenie has no “super powers” but she is an incredibly smart kitty :) I, also, enjoy the Catskills setting. Growing up in New York, I’ve been to the Catskills many times and those small areas are the perfect cozy mystery settings. They are quaint, small towns with townspeople who know everything and everyone. In this book it came in handy. It’s a fast-paced mystery with many twists and turns. I was sure I knew who the bad guy was, but I was wrong. It kept me surprised until the last couple of chapters. Although the mystery is contained in this book, I do think it’s better to read the series in order. It gives you a better feel for what Kari has been through and where she is now. This is one of my favorites of 2022, so far. I really do hope this series continues. I want more Kari and Queenie! I love this series so much. It's such a feel good story (except the murder part because ofcourse that's bad) about people who volunteer at a pet rescue and do good things. If I could I would definitely go volunteer at Serenity Shelter to help out. Kari is thinking about how far she's come in these last 4 years and how thankful she is for her life and friends in Lakeview when in walks her ex-husband, Charlie, with news that blindsides her and realizes she could lose everything she's worked for. Her worries take somewhat of a backseat though when she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. Lakeview is a small town and with it comes everyone knowing all your business and gossiping. In this case though, its that small town charm that helps Kari solve the murder.

Charlie already has plans, with a business partner, to remove the shelter and set up a glamping resort. Kari vows to fight his plan to the death. She doesn't owe him anything and she worked too hard to get the shelter up and running again to let the animals and the volunteers down. Charlie doesn't take no for an answer and keeps turning up where he's not wanted. Furthermore, a mysterious blond woman, claiming to want to adopt a pet but acting strangely, arrives in town and Angus was spotted having lunch with her! When Charlie turns up at brunch at Kari's visibly ill, she doesn't think much of it only that it will prolong the fight. The next thing she knows, his landlady at the local inn calls to say she sent Charlie to the ER because of his illness. Kari is sure it's nothing but since Charlie is all alone in town she heads out to the ER to wait. Unfortunately the news is not good. Charlie did not survive his brief illness and what's more, the doctor believes he was poisoned! Sheriff Richardson becomes involved and sets his sights squarely on Kari-again. Even though he knows her now, there just aren't any other suspects. Kari is determined to find out what happened, clear her name and see justice done. It isn't looking good for her though. Could this be the end of her brief happiness? I like this series well enough. I wish there was more about the shelter than cleaning up. I want to get to know the adoptable pets and even the shelter mascots. I also want to see more of Fred and the other cats besides Queenie. Queenie is a little too unbelievable to me. If she could talk she would have solved the whole mystery right away. Kari should pay more attention to Queenie's clues. I did and figured out when the poison was administered. I also figured out who did it because there are only two suspects besides Kari and any number of unnamed characters. (I ruled out all the series regulars). It was pretty obvious. I thought though that there was going to be a twist to the motive. I didn't have that one entirely figured out. It came as a great disappointment when all was revealed. I just didn't like who and why. Even if you're aiming your book at middle schoolers and up, try to at least write it more complicated than that. I'm pretty sure 13-year-olds could figure this out too. After three books I've gotten to know the characters a bit and would say Kari is the least fleshed out. Here we get to know her better as she reveals details of her relationship with Charlie. She's grown up a lot since then and is in a more mature, better space. She knows what she does NOT want in her personal relationships and is better able to stand up for herself. I think winning the lottery was a wonderful thing for her personal growth. She seemed kind of sad and lonely before, the type of person someone like Charlie could prey on. He was truly an awful person. I'm sure he was a narcissist. Unused to and unable to hear the word "no", Charlie manipulated facts, told himself lies and shared those lies with others as the truth, damaging Kari's reputation in the process. Charlie's plan is actually not a bad one, however, it's not logistical to move the shelter, especially not after they just fixed it up! What would happen to the animals? He never bothers to ask Kari what she wants, he thinks he can persuade her with his charm. Yuck. What a loser. Everything else he does is so completely horrendous that I'm not surprised he ended up dead. Who wouldn't want to kill him? Kari has great friends now who are willing to stand behind her 100% AND they love animals and rescuing animals so they won't back down when threatened. Sara is as efficient as always. She knows everyone and I think Kari needs to listen to Sara more often. Call that lawyer! Sara may be a tough teacher but sometimes that comes in handy when standing up to bullies like Charlie. Even Bryn likes Kari now and even if she didn't, she'd fight hard for the animals. Suz always has Kari's back and she was the only one who saw through Charlie's charm to the smarm underneath. Suz knows how and when to joke Kari out of her doldrums. Even Angus, whatever he is to Kari, unofficial boyfriend?, is supportive. I did not understand Kari's jealously over Angus going to lunch with another woman. They're not even really dating and not exclusive. It's just lunch at the diner in full view of everyone in town. He would know the gossip would get back to Kari. The town gossips drive me crazy. They play "telephone" and usually get the facts distorted. Many people believe Kari is a murderer and won't have anything to do with her. Nasty, petty, small-minded people drive me crazy. At least the diner waitress, Cookie, believes Kari is innocent and that could go a long way towards winning over everyone else. Who IS the blond lady? I suspect she's Charlie's latest ex-girlfriend or current girlfriend or wannabe girlfriend stalking him. He seems to know her even though he says only from the hotel. There are only two suspects. One would be motivated by money/greed to kill Charlie and the other has a personal reason. Sheriff Richardson was fair in the previous book when all clues pointed to Suz but in this book he's back to being ridiculously unfair. The anonymous tip was SO completely stupid! Come on! Who would even know that information other than the murderer? Richardson should be better than that. I'm not sure if this is the end of the road for the series. I'd read another one but I wouldn't be devastated if it's over after only 3 books.

When an ex appears with horrendous plans — plans that would end the entire mystery series, it's obvious the ex will end up dead. Given how he was described by Kari and how he acted in the few chapters he was alive, I was fairly certain how he'd die, where the crime would take place, and who would do it and why they'd do it. The stories follow the generous and kindhearted Kari as she gets her life together in her hometown after living away for a while. The author continues to develop Kari’s strengths, giving her a backbone while keeping her sweet and kind. I love the friendships, both her long-term friend Suz, but also the new friends that are becoming her found-family. When Kari is accused of murdering her ex-husband, these friends stand by her side, even as the small townsfolk point fingers and gossip. I am also enjoying her slow-burn romance with the local vet, Angus. Their bonds solidify as the keep an open dialogue. As for the murder mystery, it is exciting and well planned, and even though I completed guessed the who and why from almost the start, I still loved it. The author pens a lovely story, filled with vivid details and descriptions. Her storyline is tight. I admire the sheriff who is fair and honest. I just hope the next story doesn’t put Kari (or her close friends) in the center of the suspect pool. Narration: The story is shared via the third person voice of Kari. The narrator has a calm, feminine voice which doubles as Kari’s dialogue voice. I found her mature tone well suited for Kari. Ms. Jennings really brings Kari to life, adding noticeable feelings into the performance of the empathetic character. The narrator alters the voices for each supporting character during dialogue, making each unique. All adjustments are appropriate to gender, age, and background. Overall, Ms. Jennings performs the story wonderfully, keeping me engaged and interested. In the end, Claws for Suspicion is a wonderful, entertaining story. The author is creating a cast of characters that I enjoy spending time with and can’t wait to get more of! This was a fun, start-to-finish read for me. I figured out most of the mystery early on, but the author still had a fun surprise for me later in the book. And I love the characters and setting in this series, so it was a delight to read. This is a series to stick with for me!

Early autumn in New York’s Catskill Mountains sounds like a visit I would enjoy. The town is preparing for Oktoberfest at a local microbrewery where there will be something for everyone who attends. Characterization is excellent; our protagonist and her friends are very likable, and I get to know them a little better with each visit. Who can resist Kari’s pets, especially Queenie, and the pets at the shelter? This well written, intriguing mystery opens, however, with one of the worst dreams come true for many divorced women. Kari is a young woman I admire and in some ways envy. She is living a hard-working dream since winning a huge lottery several months ago. She purchased the Serenity Sanctuary, a no-kill animal shelter that was in desperate need of funds to keep it open and serious repairs and updating. Kari put a tremendous amount of time and money into making it a modern, safe, roomy place to care for pets while they await their fur-ever home. She was able to keep the volunteers, including Sara, a retired high school teacher, and Bryn, who she could hire part time around her college classes. It was not one of the happiest moments of Kari’s life to hear Charlie, her ex-husband, when he came in to see her, flowers in hand. She had fallen for his smooth talking once, and she refuses to repeat her mistakes. He came when he learned their divorce had not been finalized a few years earlier, that a document Kari was supposed to sign and return to the clerk’s office was not received. They are still legally married despite having been to court and hearing the judge’s decree. Since they are still married, there is the little matter of her lottery winnings. His attorney said he is entitled to half of it. He would be more than happy to take the sanctuary off her hands if she doesn’t have enough money in the bank to satisfy his demands. Charlie also wants her to come back to him and be a lady of leisure. The plan that he and a partner have concocted for the property the sanctuary sits on is to turn it into a glamping resort. Charlie and Kari could just watch “their” money multiply, and he will “help” her wisely use the rest of her winnings. As her husband, he claims he has that right. Kari, however, is not leaving the sanctuary, nor is she giving him the first place she has ever felt safe, the place that has given her purpose and meaning. Telling Angus, the handsome vet she has been dating, about Charlie’s news, might not be easy. Then, when a murder takes place and Kari is at the top of the sheriff’s suspect list, everything changes. The characters are well-developed; the author brings each one to life through realistic dialog and behavior. I like Kari and Sara best, as well as Kari’s adorable kitten, Queenie. Charlie is larger than life, and like Kari, I would prefer to see as little of him as possible. After telling half the town they are still married, he cost her a few friends who think she has been living a lie. One of the things I love about most of the characters is their love for companion animals and willingness to help the ones in the sanctuary. It is what makes the series sing. Kari has a vested interest in finding out who the killer is. She had been accused of murder in the past, as had bestie Suz. They proved everyone wrong and helped find the killers who set up her and her Suz. Now if she could just refute what Charlie has told everyone and help find another killer, everything else will work its way out. Plot twists served to reveal more possible suspects; this armchair sleuth was kept guessing throughout. The killer was somewhat of a surprise even though still on my “suspect list”. The ending was more than satisfactory, and I look forward to the next adventure at the Serenity Sanctuary. I highly recommend this, and the earlier books in the series!

I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. This is a fun and easy read. The plucky protagonist is a former waitress turned millionaire lottery winner who bought a dilapidated animal sanctuary and has supported and poured resources into making it a going concern supporting neglected animals in the community. She finds herself unwillingly involved in a murder investigation *again* when her ex-husband shows up years after their divorce to try to claim half her lottery winnings. I enjoyed this installment, with Kari and her band of friends and small-town vibe. It ticks a lot of boxes: funny and down to earth protagonist, lots of animals, twists and red herrings blended into the plot, decently written dialogue that isn't clunky, and a satisfying denouement and resolution. It's a fun and enjoyable clean cozy mystery. The language is "PG" rated, a few hells and damns but nothing worse. The crimes occur off-page and there's no graphic content. Four stars. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next for Kari & co. (Especially recommended to fans of cozy mysteries featuring animals). Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

LOVED: ✔️This book was so well-written with such likable and relatable characters. My fav was Queenie! ✔️The plot was very thoughtfully written and there was a nice little twist in the end! ✔️I loved how the setting was based in and around the animal sanctuary ❤️. If you’re a cozy mystery fan and love stories that include animals that help gather clues to solve murders (might I mention small town charm as well) then you will LOVE Deborah Blake’s new book! Thank you @netgalley and @berkleypub for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Kari Stuart is settling into her new life in Lakeview and enjoys running Serenity Sanctuary, the shelter she owns. Now Oktoberfest is coming up and she's looking forward to attending. But things go bad when her ex-husband, Charlie Smith, shows up claiming that their divorce was never finalized and demands half her lottery winnings or the land where the sanctuary sits. Then things get worse when there's a murder and Kari becomes the prime suspect. So, Karl sets out to find the real killer. I love Deborah Blake's books and have really enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. It's well-written with wonderful characters and a well-thought-out plot. It captures small town life and has relationships that are done well. I was drawn into this engaging story from the start and kept hooked until the finish. It was great following the mystery and figuring out who the murderer was. I truly hope that there's more to come from this enchanting series. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order for the most benefit and enjoyment.

This is the third in this charming pet centered cozy series. I have enjoyed the series and this new release was one of my favorites in the series. Our intrip shelter owner Kari and her darling Queenie cat are back with a sleuth that if left unsolved may take her shelter and home away from her. I like Kari as a protagnist but in this book she proves she has a long way to go to develop her own backbone and stop letting men manipulate her. When her ex husband returns to town determined to gain half her lottery winnings and close her beloved animals shelter Kari is shocked to find out that they were never divorced. Or so he says. His manulaptive behavior shocks Kari but she fails to stand up to him even giving up in the beginning assuming he is right without investigation for herself. After he is murdered she is suspect number one and we see a new Kari emerge determined to save herself and her business. This is a clever sleuth that I enjoyed to completion. A nice addition to this wonderful cozy series with great charcters, fun animals and good sleuthing.

This is the third book in the Catskills Pet Rescue Mystery series by Deborah Blake. This is the first book in this series that I have read. It stands alone well. The characters are realistic and developed well even though I don’t know much of their backstories. The setting was described well. I can envision the area in fall as the leaves are changing color and the air is cool. I was also able to picture the animal sanctuary and Kari’s home. Once I sat down to read, I couldn't stop. Deborah Blake has a way of pulling you into the story so that you feel like you are walking with the characters. She gives you plenty to think about as the mystery unfolds, unveiling clues in subtle ways. Thank you Deborah, for introducing me to the world of Lakeview and cozy mysteries. I can't wait for the next one. Once I sat down to read, I couldn't stop. Deborah Blake has a way of pulling you into the story so that you feel like you are walking with the characters. I love this series. Granted, I figured it out before the end, I still loved this book. Queenie the kitten is one of the best characters and best detectives created. The murder mystery was interesting, and honestly I was glad the victim bought the far. I've heard rumors Berkley hasn't opted to extend the series. That's very sad, and I hope the change their minds! I hope Kari and Queenie return I have enjoyed all three books in the series and the author gets better at plotting out who done it every time , but I always worry that a series will end too soon if sales aren't large enough, so if you are reading this review get every book in the series! I promise a purrfectly great reading experience! I listened to on audiobook. The emotionally abusive x husband gave me a little anxiety but good mystery. Only thing left out was analysis that the murderer had a very large screw loose. Happy Heroine seems to Be healing herself.
