Award-winning horror author Simon Paul Woodward, was once again, awesome enough to send me a copy of his latest book, 'Wearing Shadows' , for review. This fantastic collection consists of a novella and 9 short stories, unsettling and unique enough to cause you nightmares as none of us can escape the darkness that haunts our souls. 1. Wearing Shadows : The eponymous novella, featuring an actress desperate to get rid of her shadow and therefore her dark past. As she undergoes the most extreme, occult cosmetic surgery amputating her shadow, she finds out that she should be careful what she wished for. A diamond of a horror novella, written in such a cool cinematic style. This one radiates, 'Drag me to hell' , 'Neon Demon' , 'It Follows,' Us', 'Pyewacket' and 'A Dark Song' from start to finish, all with a very very dark twist. And with a scene straight out of Se7en.....oooh, glorious I tell you. (Andy Serkis check it out , this story is begging to be made into a film 😉) 2.The Man With Sticks And Hooks: A man out for blood, a blind woman on the run. Will she escape the demonic man with sticks and hooks, become his prey or fight back? The plot twist on this one alone, is golden. 3.We Have Come For Your Children: a terrific short short, as 'children' Jemima and Jacques are taken. Short, sharp, scary. 4.The Master Workshop: Chosen by the most renowned and reclusive violin maker in the world to be his sole apprentice, the protagonist discovers the madness in the method. This is gothic horror supreme. 5.What I Done For The Devil: A man tells a tale of how the devil made him do it. A killer, devilishly good, short tale. 6.Return Of The Hero: A war veteran tries to enjoy a pint of Guinness. Or is he not? 7.The Mutal Pleasures Of Brothers-In-Arms: Pllease stand in awe as 'The Fight Club' blends (ahem..) with 'The Thing' in this short tale. 8. Chalk bodies: In the search for SpannerMan two kids enter a derelict and allegedly haunted house. Hauntingly good. 9. I, surrogate : A man desperate to save his business, accepts the invitation to be involved in a sexual act. An act that 'gives birth' to otherworldly results. An alluring and scary tale. 10. Speaking, Whispering Really : A man confesses to the police inspector about the woman in the mirror who made him do it. Short and sweet. Dear reader, from the very moment you get your hands on this truly wonderful, inventive and dark read, you get immersed into a world of shadows. One that the author masterfully penned for your reading pleasure. Dark tales with a twist that will keep you up all night. The writing is beautiful and inventive, the style unique and the horror, graphic and cinematic. Grab a copy of 'Wearing Shadows', available on May 29th (and perhaps one of 'Wearing Skin'). It will send shivers down your spine because this collection is a prime example of how creative an author's writing can be. Get it at: https://www.amazon.com/Wearing-Shadow... This is the first time I’ve read Simon Paul Woodward, and it certainly won’t be the last! Whenever I sat down to read Wearing Shadows, I found myself hanging on every word, and when I put the book down, the stories and characters seemed to follow me like my own shadow, or penumbran. I would love to see each of Woodward’s short stories turned into full length novels, especially Wearing Skin (my favorite). Wearing Shadows is a fun, quick read that I highly recommend to fans who enjoy being spooked and who are looking for out-of-the-ordinary horror. I can’t wait to read more from Woodward!

The first Anthology, Wearing Skin, was one of the best, most Hellish, reads of 2020! I highly recommend that you read these in order, as there are some Easter eggs to be found! The book starts with a novella, followed by short stories, some in just 333 words, which are each like a poisonous kiss in the dark. Beautiful and fluent writing that will seize your attention. Simon is the love-child of Clive Barker and Stephen King. Wearing Shadows is about an actress who hates her shadow, and finds a woman who can amputate it from her person. The consequences of her "surgery" are mortifying, and the relationship she develops with her shadow, deranged and disturbing ... . Simon is a Master of Speculative Horror. You will immediately develop an intimate bond with his prose. Simon knows how to ask, "What If?" and make it resonate. With undertones that deal with sex and sexuality, these tales come straight from the heat of Hell to penetrate your psyche. I'm still thinking about the first book, and this one has only enhanced my perception of The Wearing Horror Reading Experience, as I'm sure it will yours. The Spanner Man in Chalk Bodies, and The Man With Sticks and Hooks - a demon hunting a blind woman, are scary AF. These are Must Reads for any Horror Enthusiast!

Wearing Shadows is freaking amazing! Wow! This damn book gave me heart palpitations... in a great way. I want to start by saying that I don’t scare easily but somehow @simonpaulwoodward manages to scare me time and time again. But it’s better then just being scared, it’s the realistic details that make me forget I’m reading fiction, and the compelling characters and plot that make it impossible to put the book down. I usually do not read short story collections like this but this was a giveaway. I gave this 1 star because these were super short stories like less than 350 words so just as you get into the story it leaves you hanging which I guess that is the purpose of the short story. The first story in the book about wearing shadows was the longest and best story. If you really like short reads like this, then you will probably like this one but it wasn't for me.
