Characters: Brynn and Jack were both interesting characters who added to the story, but my favorite character was Kekoa. I mean, who doesn't like reading about a huge Hawaiian guy who's always joking around and trying to take over the plot? I'm guessing the next book is about him, so I'm looking forward to reading that. Language: Clean. Moral: I'd say the main themes of this novel were trusting God and knowing that God is in control. These themes were shown in Brynn's life because she tended to think everything was up to her and she always tried to be in control. Plot: Plenty of action, tense moments, and growing character relationships kept the plot moving. The technology aspects were described in a way average readers can more easily understand them (average reader here). I didn't love the domestic terrorism/your next-door neighbor is probably a terrorist angle though. Random comments: At the beginning, I struggled with the whole CIA aspect because the CIA isn't exactly the most moral of organizations, but I reminded myself this is fiction and moved on with my reading. :) I was also a little disturbed by the few lines that presented the idea that the whole world needs to unite to get rid of terrorism. Let's just say I've read Revelation ... Romance: Clean. Just a kiss at the end. I did think the romance took away from the plot at some points in the story. For example, Jack and Brynn would switch from talking about their case to discussing their feelings for each other in a way that felt a little unnatural/disruptive. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of romances. :) Writing: Natalie Walters has a great writing style. I liked how she worked some humor into the characters' dialogue to keep the book from getting too dark. Overall: Lights Out was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense. Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. Good! Author Natalie Walters has shifted from a small town police force series to one covering security worldwide. While most of the story takes place in Washington DC and Virginia, there is also action in Egypt, Texas and Georgia. Outstanding cast of characters. Plausible and fast paced storyline. Slow building romance. Comic relief with team member Kekoa. This all comes together for a great start to the SNAP (Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency) Series! Lights Out is a great start of a new series set in Washington, DC. I am excited to read the next story and have purchased the novella that is an overview. This is a rollercoaster of action, danger, suspense, and the terrorists always one step ahead. I enjoyed the setting, fun group of characters working to stop what appears to be one bad group of troublemakers along with the hope of a second chance at romance and sprinkled with faith. Better get started with this new series if you enjoy intense suspense and second chances filled with tension and sparks. I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing and NetGalley. 'Choose fear or choose faith, but only one choice will bring peace.' When I read Natalie Walters' first book, I was hooked on her writing. She has released three books prior to this one and they've all been really good. This time, Walters totally ups her game. Big time. A high-stakes international terrorist plot. An elite agency created to handle this kind of threat. A CIA analyst so immersed in her career that she's lost track of everything else -- including the man she once loved. Only now they are thrown together in a race-against-time scenario. Talk about sense of urgency and angst and a ricochet of heart-in-throat action moments that kept me on edge right to the last breathless second. Phew! First off -- our hero, Jack Hudson!!! That takes me back to the good ol' days of Sue Thomas F B Eye. Did anyone else watch that show? I wonder if that was deliberate on the part of the author, or just a coincidence? But this Jack definitely has the same qualities as the TV Jack and the same melt-your-heart-into-goo chocolate brown eyes. :-) And his SNAP team -- a diverse and eclectic band of talented professionals who know how to work hard and have formed a deep bond which spills over into teasing banter and pointed heart-to-hearts. They've created a kind of family and I loved every single group scene! Super excited to see what's in store for each team member in future books in the series. And then we have Brynn. Gulp. I'll admit I wasn't a fan in the beginning. She's driven and so focused on the job that she's seems almost robotic. In fact, she chose the CIA over Jack in the past and their reunion on this mission is fraught with tension. He doesn't trust her and she's all kinds of defensive. The author does a great job of building up the suspense about their past relationship and I found my heart softening towards Brynn bit by bit as more and more of her back story was revealed. The complex suspense with all its twists and turns makes for a compelling read. As does the way the author manages to weave a faith thread into Brynn's life. Trust and forgiveness. Finding the strength to let go and hand the control over to God. Tough lessons during an impossible time which makes the learning that much sweeter. These are characters I can't wait to meet again so I hope the next SNAP Agency book is due out soon! Book provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications Inc.

Wow what an up-to-the-minute, suspenseful story. I loved getting to know the gang at SNAP Agency as they team with CIA analyst Brynn Taylor. The problem is that Brynn has a history with team member Jack Hudson and when they last saw each other, it wasn’t pretty. They agree to work together to find an Egyptian spy who is missing on US soil. Oh the scary and subversive things they discover. And it is more widespread than they thought. Jack: “When our trust lies in the control we think we have, we are saying we don’t trust in the One who is completely in control and completely good.” When it came down to a critical time, Brynn realized that God was her anchor and held her firmly in His hands. The addition of a Princess Bride Movie birthday party was a great break in the tension. I feel like Natalie Walters did a really great job of making my actually enjoy a suspenseful narrative! It was easy as a reader who doesn't have much experience with the genre to follow along and had some really fun characters to go with it. This is a book about a second chance at love and found family. I loved the SNAP agency. They really had some great banter and the chemistry between all the characters was really cohesive and fun. There is an underlying terrorism plot that will keep you on your toes in addition to a sweet romance arc. It really gives off a 24 (the tv show) vibe and had great progression of clues leading up to the climax. And while I wanted more romance, I think what was in the book was really sweet and done well. So I would classify this as a suspense novel with a dash of romance and if this seems like it would be up your alley, I say go give it a try! You never know what genres will surprise you. *completely clean in content, no language and some light kissing.

They were both extremely professional and focused on the threat, yet their painful history caused both of them to feel distracted at times as they juggled reemerging feelings for each other. I thought the romantic tension was just the right amount for the story and would have even liked it to have ramped up a bit with maybe an epilogue after the last chapter. I liked the introduction to the various members of SNAP and I look forward to seeing this group working together in future books.

I'm a huge fan of Natalie Walters' stories and so I was super excited to read Lights Out. It was amazing! This story takes place on a national stage which is quite the leap from her other series which was set in a small town. Higher stakes. Larger threats. And unspeakable consequences should Brynn Taylor and Jack Hudson fail their mission. So to say this story was gripping would be an understatement. The cast of characters was cleverly varied enough that I could easily tell them apart. That said I'm a huge fan of Natalie Walters' stories and so I was super excited to read Lights Out. 4.5 Stars This book was such a nice change of pace! It’s been a long time since I picked up a suspense book and this one really hit the spot. With characters that are unique, exciting and well rounded, it was such a delight! It was such an interesting concept. I’ll be back, apparently I have some reading to do.

W o w. That's all I can say. This is a new and refreshing story idea, and I'm all-in. I enjoyed that this one is a second chance romance, and also enjoyed the fact for most of the story, the romance actually takes a back seat to the impending terrorism threat that Brynn Taylor must work to dismantle with her ex Jack Hudson, and his team from the SNAP Agency. The stakes are high, the threats are real, and the team may have stumbled upon something more dastardly than they ever could have expected. I personally loved how the author used the high stakes to emphasize that we can't ever handle these things alone, and faith in our Mighty Savior is always the only way through it. I also surprised myself by loving every single character on the SNAP team, and I truly can't wait to read each of their upcoming stories. However, I must agree with the general consensus that Kekoa was the absolute best, and made a great story an ever better one in my opinion. I loved his never ending enthusiasm, and his positive outlook on any situation they manage to find themselves in. This book was everything I've come to know and love from Natalie Walters, and is an explosive start to her new series. I definitely recommend this one to anyone who is a fan of Christian suspense. I have to add one last tidbit and state that this book heavily reminded me of one of my all time favorite TV shows, Sue Thomas FB Eye, and I loved that! I definitely cannot wait to continue on with reading the rest of the series, and I truly think the author hit it out of the ball park once again! Final Rating: 5/5. I loved his happy-go-lucky attitude (though not nearly as happy-go-lucky as Kekoa) and the way he jumped into everything with a positive attitude. The suspense was epiiiiic. Like, all of the bad dudes and how they tied in to the plot confused me a liiiiitle bit, but other than that, it kept me on my toes. (well...not literally. But ya get my drift.) I especially loved it when Brynn teamed up with Lyla; they made a formidable duo. And Lyla was one of those characters that amused me and annoyed me at the same time, but I adored her for it anyway. And her + Garcia? Classic. Iconic. Poor dude got majorly friend zoned, but I loved his attitude. (Now that I think about it, there really wasn't anyone on the team that I didn't like.) And shall I talk about the InjURiEs?? People got poisoned. Shot. Bones broke. Ended up in the hospital. It was great. (wow, Kate, love the priorities there)(also I feel like every time a book involves injuries, I have to make some sort of crack about my priorities) So. What didn't I like? Um...well...y'all know I'm not a romance fan. If something is categorized as romantic suspense, I expect there to be romance, and I expect there to be suspense. I expect people to do their jobs, and then explore a relationship. What I don't expect is for people to be walking into a potential ambush, guns at the ready, unable to stop thinking about kissing the person next to them. And every moment in between. Really, y'all. It was just...too much. Sparks were flying every which way c o n s t a n t l y, and when one moment they refused to trust each other, the next moment it's "LeT mE KIsS YoU" (can you tell I'm not a fan of enemies to lovers?) And then the spiritual aspect. Brynn and Jack are Christians. But, as often happens, they kinda walked out on God due to their jobs, past hurts, etc. and then realize that they need to fix that. Fine. I'm okay with that. But the fact that they just kinda mention it in passing and then there's never really any conclusion to that? Like...it would have been better not to mention it at all, I think, than to just gloss over it and give the impression that the mention of God and faith is only because the publisher is Christian. Someone is going to love this book and learn from it and have it touch them. I just am not that person. *I received a copy of this book from the publisher for promotional purposes. All thoughts are my own.

Wow what a ride!!! Let it be known this is the first 5 star suspense I've read in ages. Natalie Walters is a new-to-me author. My sister has her first series but I'd never gotten the chance to read those yet, and what a shame because after this book, I'm sold. Just give me more Kekoa and I'll live happily ever after (and based on that sneak peak of book 2, I'm guessing we're getting a lot more of him!!!). And did I mention, the whole story takes place over one week. At first I was worried the story would be paced very slowly, but it really does read like an episode of a TV show! Oh, and I could not predict for anything how it would end - except for one detail, which I picked up on right away and waited the entire book for it to make an appearance. I fell for the entire SNAP team - they feel like family now. The banter - check. The snark - perfection. I felt like all the side characters had stories to them that I really want to uncover, which I'm hoping means they all get a book dedicated to them! I'm not a fan of second-chance romance, but Natalie hit it out of the park on this one. The ending wasn't all crazy with proclamations of love, rather it left the main issues resolved but allowed for time to see where things would end up. Sometimes I feel like the issue that drives the couple away in the first place doesn't really get resolved properly, but that's not the case with this one. Seeing as this is a romantic suspense, there is moments in the story that revolve around the romance arc. Some readers might think it detracts from the suspense, but I enjoyed the reprieve and getting to know Brynn and Jack a little better. And also, their interactions together are pure entertainment. Random side note, Jack Hudson reminds me of the character in the TV show Sue Thomas, FBEYE, because they share the same name. Please tell me I'm not the only one haha. Honestly, for not knowing what I was going into, I was blown away by the writing, the detail, the intensity... and I'll sound like a broken record but I really did feel like I was sitting down with an episode of a TV show, except in book format. I've only come across one other book that felt that exact same way (in a completely different genre) and I wish there were more! And oh my goodness that ending was killer!! After reading many suspense books I kind of fell out of love with the genre, and never really enjoyed the ones I'd read. Don't get me wrong, those books were all good, but Light's Out was the book that surprised me - and I think it's because of the style it's written in. I fully recommend this book to any suspense-lovers out there, and even those who have yet to try out a romantic suspense. You won't regret it! I received a copy of Light's Out from the publisher for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. A positive review was not required. Seriously, I loved this book.

This book was very different from Natalie’s previous series, I honestly wasn’t sure if I would like it but now I think I might have liked it even better then her other books. She has created a great cast of characters that will engage you and leave you wanting to read whatever comes next in this series. There was a lot going on and the questions surrounding the events will keep you wanting to read to see what is happening. A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. Wow! This was my first Natalie Walters book, and she drew me right into the story. I love when that happens! I really enjoyed Brynn, and Jack, and how they had to let go of past hurts to move forward in working this case together, and in rebuilding their past friendship/relationship. I loved how Jack always encouraged Brynn to let God be her anchor, and how Jack's words helped her remember her own father's words to the same effect. There were so many puzzle pieces to try and figure out, and just when I thought I maybe, kinda had an inkling, something new was tossed into the mix! All the pieces did fall into their proper place at the end, though, and wow! 4.5 stars

This first book in the SNAP collection promises to be a series readers are sure to enjoy. Plenty of intrigue, high-stakes, and team dynamics that really bring the story to life on the page. Fans of Ronie Kendig and Lynette Eason are sure to love Natalie Walter’s new series!

We had to wait over a year and a half for this new novel from Natalie Walters but in this case it was definitely worth the wait! Things were a little detail heavy at the very beginning but it was all necessary information so bear with it! And once the story gets set up and rolling you totally get sucked into it! The banter and camaraderie between all of them was fantastic! Jack was a great hero and I admired his calm amidst the storms and his selfless desire to protect others. Brynn was a little harder to like at the start but she definitely grew on me and I enjoyed seeing her character growth throughout the story! I liked the fact that Jack and Brynn had a history that gave them a stronger basis for their relationship even if it meant they had some things from the past to work through. The two of them were great together and I was rooting for them the whole time! This wasn’t your typical find the one bad guy and stop him suspense but rather it there were several puzzle pieces and the team was in a race to fit them together before time ran out! There were several close calls throughout and I was completely invested in every twist and turn! This book was a wonderfully enjoyable suspense and I definitely recommend it! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Oh wow!! This book was so good! This was non-stop suspense. I mean from the very first page your attention is captured and just doesn't let up. The rest of the SNAP agency characters were spectacular and Kekoa the computer analyst was awesome and I can't wait to read his story in the second book. Although there is romance in the story that's definitely not the focus. The book is full of danger, faith, suspense and keeps you turning the pages. I really like how the author ties in the element of faith throughout the story and it's not in your face but its definitely there. This line from Jack I think says it all, " When our trust lies in the control we think we have, we are saying we don't trust in the One who is completely in control and completely good." I also enjoyed that she incorporated one of my favorite movies the Princess Bride! If you enjoy suspense and mystery or shows like FBI or SEALS then you will definitely enjoy this story! I for one cannot wait until the next book! I received a copy of this book from the publisher Revell. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I am not typically a suspense reader, but I have been a fan of Natalie Walters since day one. When I saw she had a new series coming out, I knew I would for sure be reading it. With high stakes and endearing characters, Lights Out creates a plausible team fighting an enemy that feels all too real-world. Walters excels at creating an intense yet subtle plot that builds tension until the stories end. At the same time, she brings to life amazing characters that seem like real people. I know some of them have their own story, and I can only hope we get to read those in a future novel. Brynn and Jack have a history together, which sets up for some interesting interactions when they are brought together again by necessity. I appreciate that it’s not too dramatic – they have to focus on saving the day, of course, which is dramatic enough as it is; however, it does bring a depth to the story that may not have been present had they known each other already. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the SNAP Agency series and can easily recommend this book (and her previous series) to fans of contemporary suspense. A complimentary copy of this novel was provided by the publisher; this review is my honest opinion.

When I heard Walters had a new book releasing, I HAD to get a copy of it! After reading Harbored Secrets, I just knew I had to see what was next...even though the plot is kind of a slow start for me, I again couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how Brynn's investigation would progress. Even his accent was PERFECTLY written and he was just refreshing to the story, even as he interrupted the two main characters more than once. He's not a real person, but kept me smiling throughout. Wishing I could hire him to be my tech guy! Jack can't seem to get a break...of ALL the CIA agents in D.C., he ends up working with the one woman he doesn't trust and totally broke his heart. However, that doesn't stop him from protecting her in every bad surprise that heads their way as they do whatever it takes to get answers. The ending was so suspenseful but SO GOOD. LOVED the female officer who holds her ground and refuses to cooperate, a true patriot! NEVER knew who the bad guys were, but man were they clever and ALWAYS a step ahead! Not my favorite Walters book, but still overjoyed for the chance to read it. Received a free copy from Revell via NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. The thoughts and comments are my own.
