This issue actually made me think more highly of #1029 because of how well it continued from it. This new villain might actually turn out to be interesting.

It stuck me immediately that this setup mirrors real life events that police have faced in recent years - often fatal ambushes and a permeating fear for their safety to respond to calls that leaves citizens vulnerable. I hesitated to state this because obviously there is much more to this issue that is beyond the scope of a comic book review and my intent is not to slight, short sight, or ignore other factors. I hesitated to state this because obviously there is much more to this issue that is beyond the scope of a comic book review and my intent is not to slight, short sight, or ignore other factors. SO - From a masked vigilante standpoint, how can they protect the very people setting them up? Plus, it also sets up a controversial desire to shutdown what Batman deems a grassroots movement. The reader knows there's someone pulling the strings, but does Batman? If the citizens of Gotham truly wanted him gone, without an outside influence egging them on, how would the interpretation of that scene change? We know how hardheaded Batman is. But we also know that Gotham is Gotham. For now, I applaud the writing team for tackling such heavy and current issues, but once these heavy topics are broached, they often result in poorly written or rushed finales that erase anything they hoped to accomplish. Only time will tell if it works. I'm honestly not a fan of unmasking in the canonical books, especially following the various White Knight series (which I loved despite the rules placed on masks). It seems like DC keeps replaying the same tropes and that's getting old fast, so I hope they keep this fresh and relevant.
