As a former investigative reporter I've always been interested in Nellie Bly and her journalism career. This chapter book inspired by the She Persisted picture book series, take readers back in time to her early years and some of the disappointments she experienced due to family finances and problems. Even though she had to quit school, she didn't let that hold her back, boldly writing a letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch after a column disparaging women in the workplace appeared. H As a former investigative reporter I've always been interested in Nellie Bly and her journalism career. Her writing brought her attention, a new job, and a new name. Eventually she became a reporter for the New York World where she went undercover in an asylum and traveled around the world in 72 days, sending dispatches to the newspaper every step of the way. She continued her writing career while marrying a much-older man and taking over her husband's manufacturing business after his death. It's clear from the text that the author is an admirer of Nellie Bly, a groundbreaker in so many ways and one about whom today's readers need to know. The author has included some suggestions for how readers can use Nellie's example for their own lives and persist in reaching their own goals, no matter the naysayers.

Even though Nellie Bly was mentioned in the picture book She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World, it didn't make enough of an impact for me to remember why she was important (I recognized the name but that's it). It was nice to read a little more about her (and hopefully it'll stick this time). The beginning of the book was a little dry and hard to me to get into but after 1/3 of it, I was hooked and I wanted to find out more about Bly's interesting life. This is a decent series for kids that are ready for a bit more than a picture book about a famous woman.

I read this book with my fourth graders and then had the opportunity to listen the author talk for Young Author’s Day at my school. I learned so much and the kids enjoyed the book! It’s a simple, quick read but plenty interesting and would appeal to many kids in upper elementary!

As I walked through the Wordsmith Bookshoppe with my grandchildren this book caught my eye. I purchased two ‘She Persisted’ books & after reading the fascinating story of Nellie Bly, I intend to get the whole series to read then pass to my grandkids💙. These are awesome little books!

Boy I sure do love that Nellie Bly, so there really wasn't any way I wasn't going to love this. The art is great, as it is for this entire series. Boy I sure do love that Nellie Bly, so there really wasn't any way I wasn't going to love this. The art is great, as it is for this entire series.

Love this series, especially the end matter about how you can persist and the robust references. This started bit slow and I didn't love the writing as much as some of the others, but once you get into some of the assignments/adventures Nellie went on, I think kids will find her life exciting. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. Love this series, especially the end matter about how you can persist and the robust references.
