Then his father died, and the big man with cold eyes took Gus away. Gus went on many great adventures, found friends, love, happiness, family, and acceptance. Now, years later…it begins again. A young boy with antlers and deer-like feature wakes in a bizarre and completely foreign world where the last humans struggle to survive. They tell the boy he is special, he is chosen, and that he alone can lead them back to a world dominated by the oppressive Hybrids. Sweet Tooth: The Return is no re-hash of the original series, but rather a bold re-imagining of the Sweet Tooth mythology; taking elements of the original series and remixing them into something familiar, but totally new. A divided world. A planet long ago past the point of devastation. And at the center of it all, a child who didn’t ask to be born into any of this, but who has no choice but to try and forge some life for himself. His visions and dreams may not be real at all…they may just be fiction. But they are hope. And sometimes hope is enough. Acclaimed writer/artist Jeff Lemire reunites with colorist José Villarubia to bring you the next chapter in the saga of DC’s acclaimed series Sweet Tooth!

A solid return to a pretty good series. While I was a little lost, the feel of "danger" is always around and the story structure is solid. I have questions on what the hell is happening but I'm excited to see where it goes. A solid return to a pretty good series. Lot of question and not much answer in this first volume of the new, and unexpected, series of Sweet Tooth! I'm very glad it happen and will read it all without a doubt.

This raises a lot of interesting questions! Hopefully it’ll be a good addition to Sweet Tooth

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I have to admit, I haven't read the original Sweet Tooth. And now I'm going to go back and check it out because I think I'll appreciate it more. And already, I still appreciate this. Lemire is a good storyteller so the way he sets up the panels and the pages, sometimes showing through art and sometimes through words more clues to subvert what he's shown so far, is enjoyable. We know he's done this before in his previous works and while his plots are often more subdued from other comics, it does I have to admit, I haven't read the original Sweet Tooth. We know he's done this before in his previous works and while his plots are often more subdued from other comics, it does not mean they're less poignant and powerful. We've got a sci-fi world slowly opening up in here, and unreliable narration. Yet the focus is on Sweet Tooth and his agency/innocence and that's what's most intriguing to me. For a subtle story, I'm very engaged already. I feel the only things detracting from a better enjoyment of this story are the ads in the middle of the story and the price-point. 40.25/50.

"He says all I have to do is be free and have fun until it is time to go to heaven." An interesting way of summing up the human experience. I found these passages to be a well managed examination of anxiety and depression. Leave it to Lemire to expertly plant nuance into his comics surrounding life and death. This whole issue plays like a warped and nightmarish version of the very first issue of Sweet Tooth. You gotta keep in mind I have only read the first 5 issues. And this issue takes place 300 years after those events. I imagine the idea here is that we have Sweet Tooth reincarnated. And some of his memories (like Jeppard) are coming back to him in splendor. I mean, that's what I got outta it at least. I should probably go back and read the main run. But I couldn't help myself and look ahead into this trippy future.

Sweet Tooth is top to bottom one of the best story arcs ever. Couldn’t be happier that it’s back!
