Actual rating 4.5 stars Aw, Deep in Providence is raw. Haunting. Magical. Painful. Sad. Hopeful. Emotional. And above all, splendidly written! Three voices, Miliana’s, Inez’s, and Natalie’s, each so distinctive, each full of grief, each dealing with different things after their best friend Jas died in a car accident caused by a drunken driver. Determined to get Jas back, the girls start using their mystical abilities. I don’t really believe in higher powers and am pretty down-to-earth. But this book, I can’t even. Riss just pulled me into a world full of plants and spells and magic, and I had to surrender. To those three beautiful girls, to the descriptive writing, even to the magic I never believed in. I immediately compared Deep in Providence to The Honeys by Ryan La Sala (not out yet). Although both young adult books couldn’t be more different, they’re also incredibly alike. Both books are on the darker side with grief as the central theme, and in the meantime, the stories are about so many other important issues. Deep in Providence is about love, friendship, and family relationships, and next to grief it deals with topics like sexuality, drug addiction, immigration, religion, and teen pregnancy. This book moved me in a way I didn’t expect in advance, and I highly recommend it! And Riss, I closed my eyes and imagined that your dedication was already in my early copy, and I loved it! I received an ARC from Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Henry Holt and Co, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Follow me on Instagram

The girls use a combination of the magic handed down to them from the generations that came before them and their own strength and tenacity to navigate issues like relationships, discrimination, guilt, drug use and abuse, and the overall complex and yet wonderful experience of growing up Brown and Black in Rhode Island. Riss M. Neilson is a masterful writer, and I truly cannot wait to read more from her.

It’s emotional and raw and magical, and its thought-provoking themes, dynamic characters, and unique plot made for an engrossing read. The story follows three teenage girls as they grieve the loss of their mutual friend, who died in a tragic car accident. Determined to bring Jasmine back, the girls work together using magic in the hopes that it’s not too late for her lingering spirit. But the more they work on their magic, the darker and more haunted life becomes. The story is told from the perspectives of the three teens, Miliani, Inez, and Natalie, who lost their friend Jasmine. Each character is well developed, layered, and has a distinct voice, and I love that you get the thoughts and feelings of each girl. The story is not just about the girls dealing with the sudden and tragic death of their friend and fighting to bring her back using magic. It’s also about their personal journeys as they face complex, life-changing situations. Though Jasmine’s death and the plan to get her back are at the forefront of the story, Miliani, Inez, and Natalie each face so many other issues, including family pressures, drug addiction, relationship troubles, and more. Their stories are a fascinating and balanced blend of magic and realism, and I found each character’s journey unique and interesting. The story takes place in Rhode Island, and as a native of the state, I loved reading about cities, attractions, and landmarks that I’ve frequented. Many of the places Miliani, Inez, and Natalie go to are less than a mile from my house, and I could easily picture these girls hanging out at the local park down the street from my house, heading to a beach a town over from me, and working on the same street where my dad grew up. Of course, if you aren’t a lifelong resident of Rhode Island like me, no need to worry. The writing, which pulls you right into the story, is engaging and immersive, and the author’s use of imagery, symbolism, and figurative language enhances the setting, mood, and tone. The plot is as richly layered as the characters, and the way that it weaves real world issues into a magical and suspenseful story is masterful. I was equally invested in the real world issues, which include sex, sexuality, guilt, immigration issues, difficulties in relationships, drug use and abuse, and unexpected pregnancy, as I was in the magic. Both are fleshed out well and compelling. The plot is also well-paced, and I enjoyed how the suspense and intensity increased as the story progressed. It definitely made for some nail-biting moments, especially as you get closer to the story’s climax, and the unexpected twists added to the intensity. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, something else happened that changed everything, and I love that! It’s not a predictable read, and it went in surprising (in a good way) directions. And the magic is so fascinating and complex, and I was eager to learn more about the inherited gifts and the friends’ use of it to bring back their best friend. It highlighted some interesting and thought-provoking ideas about the use and abuse of magic, as well as the ramifications of using magic you don’t understand even with good intentions. A story about grief, loss, guilt, friendship, family, magic, and so much more, Deep in Providence is incredibly moving and powerful, and it’s a story that I’ll think about for a long time to come. I’m so grateful to the author and publisher for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. Deep in Providence is a brilliant debut novel by Riss M. Neilson, and I look forward to reading more by this talented, thought-provoking storyteller.

4 stars. A unique and intriguing plot, gorgeous writing, and a likable cast of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It’s split between three pov’s. Inez, Miliani, and Natalie after the death of their friend, Jasmine. They’re being haunted by her spirit and have to resort to magic to try and bring her back. I think the author did a really good job with making all the characters and their voices distinct from one another. Outside of the main plot of trying to bring back their friend they a 4 stars. I also really loved the discussion of tough topics like mental health, grief, and abortion. It was all handled really well. I will say that I think this book felt a wee bit too long. It was slow going in the beginning and a bit towards the end and it definitely felt every bit of its 465 pages. The pacing was a bit uneven for me. Overall, this was a very entertaining and at times emotional read. It’s a damn impressive debut and I’m looking forward to seeing what Neilson does next.

As soon as I heard about this book, I knew I needed to have it because it's based in Rhode Island! As much as I love my tiny state, it never gets the recognition it deserves. This book is labeled as YA fantasy, which is it, but it is also so much more than that. Deep in Providence tackles death, friendship, religion, magic, family, the immigrant experience, drug addiction, sexual assault, bisexuality and class favoritism all in one novel. And the author pulled it off brilliantly. There is a lot going on, but that's high school. The characters felt so authentic with fully-fleshed out lives, families, and history. With all of this turmoil, the girls turn to magic to have some power over their experience. The magic system is based in Filipino culture, and it felt like real magic. Not sparkly, flashy magic. The spells were more elemental with herbs and intention versus wands and glitter. I liked that. This gave me strong feels of The Craft (if you are old enough to remember that movie.) Deep in Providence lands in stores on May 31, and if you like witchy, diverse stories, you NEED this on your list.

The Extended, Long and Very-Possibly-Messy Review: This was a stunningly-written story, but also a mildly confusing one. Now, that my have been my own fault, because I kept reading this at 1am, but I just didn’t understand some of the things that would happen! That being said though, the parts that I did understand were so incredibly interesting, and I was definitely captivated at certain sections of this book. I do have to say that I got a little confused between our three MCs and their changing POVs, but again that may have been the 1am reading, because my brain just wasn’t at its peak while completing the majority of this novel. However, whenever I did know who was who and had all their backstories straight, I was amazed by how realistic and unequivocally human-like these characters were! This book is definitely not a light, fun read – it’s the kind of book that doesn’t provide escapism (despite the fantasy aspects), instead it’s a brutal dose of reality, but Riss M. Neilson definitely did that masterfully, if nothing else. “I watch her standing there, her eyes lit up and her skin glowing in the dim light, looking like someone I know and someone I don’t, and I wonder how far she would go to get what she wants.” (This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy.) This book had such nuance in the different messages threaded throughout, and while I have no doubt I missed a number of those messages, the few that I did pick up on were touching and beautiful. The messages on family and all its issues, on the complicated nature on religion and how it fits in with other clashing aspects of one’s life – all of these were so gorgeous to read about, and I can say with complete confidence that the author has such talent. “There is no right or wrong way to go about these things, but I think you should know sometimes a person’s spirit is resting closer to you than you think. Maybe you weren’t looking hard enough before.” (This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy.) Overall, while there were certain sections where I was confused while reading this, I enjoyed the majority of it and thought the writing was stunning. I’m glad I read it! Thank you so much to the author, publisher and Colored Pages for the review copy :).

This was intense and there was a lot going on in every character’s life that was just as high stakes as the original plot, which added weight to the pacing. It’s clear Neilson took the craft seriously and that brought something very visual to it all, and while so much happened, each character and their troubles came across pretty clear. It was very beautiful and heartfelt at times and I definitely got a little emotional especially towards the end but I don’t know about rating it just yet. I got chills from the very first sentence and I knew right then, this would be a story filled with emotions in the best way possible. I’m no psychic, but I’m so glad I was right. Neilson crafts emotion, haunting, pain, love, joy, and complex characters in a way that wants you turning the page for “just one more chapter” (spoilers: you will stay up all night reading it). With such strong prose and descriptive imagery, I cannot wait for what she writes next!

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC! ”She opened the window to let the cold air inside, but the stench of death only got stronger as the minutes ticked by.” Deep in Providence follows Miliana, Inez, and Natalie after the death of their close friend Jasmine. I dislike a lot of books with contemporary settings because of the lack of creative writing style, but the paranormal aspects of Deep in Providence gave it the immersive atmosphere it needed. This book is so beautifully written from start to end. Deep in Providence is a debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what the author, Riss M. Neilson, creates next.

Deep in Providence promised so many things I've been craving in a book, and it delivered on every single one of them expertly. The need to see what would happen next kept me up reading through exhaustion on several occasions. The love this group of girls has for each other is beautiful and inspiring and real, and I really appreciated getting to see each of their perspectives and journey with them through their individual troubles outside of their quest to bring Jasmine back to them. I truly felt their grief, their desperation, their hopes, and their fears (and when those creepy moments snuck up on them...chills!). I'm so grateful to have had the chance to read this early, and I can't wait to have it on my shelf in May!!

I... Just wow. This is one that will stick with me for a while. Before we go into anything - there need to be some trigger warnings here (and these may be slight spoilers, so skip if you want). I usually go into YA books with an expectation of there being a type of simplicity to it, and not having as many heavy themes, but this was none of that. There are SO many heavy topics, and they are all handled in an age appropriate manner to the characters. These are the kind of YA books that make me forget that it's about high school kids because of the big issues, in the best possible way. This felt so real, even with it being a book about magic. The characters all had their own personalities, problems, ideologies, priorities and they were super well explained. The use of multiple person view was super efficient in being able to get the whole picture of who these characters were and how events changed them. Even the magic was used and grown is such a fashion that I 100% would believe it is real. And honestly, this was the best ending and not at all what I thought was going to happen. But I don't think there was a better option. It was the perfect tie up, and left me extremely content. Also THE DIVERSITY. So satisfying. Sapphic story with multiple people of different ethnicities? Sign me uuuuuuuuuup. When I say I was enthralled with this, it isn't an exaggeration. I went to bed late reading it, I thought about it regularly, and this is definitely a very impactful read straight across the board. I am so happy to have found the author on Tik Tok and gotten an arc copy of this, cause it was well worth it. Highly recommended!

With the help of Inez and Natalie, the trio test their magic in so many ways to try and get stronger in order to bring Jas back. But nothing is ever that simple and the girls figure out that there’s more to magic than a tracking spell. It felt whimsical and had the most interesting atmosphere someone could muster up. The love that you could feel between the the main characters, Miliani, Inez, and Natalie was strong and something to look up to. Friendship is extremely important and I loved that this tackled friendship in every capacity possible. The idea behind trying to bring back the best friend, Jas, from the dead was a hook, line, and sinker. I was intrigued from the beginning and needed to know what would happen. It was haunting, it was heartbreaking. I felt so many emotions while reading the this. Riss M. Neilson truly created something almost poetic. Let’s also mention how much I adored each of their different backgrounds. It was thrilling to see someone resembling me on the page, and being familiar with the customs behind certain situations. I would definitely recommend this book if you love reading about strong friendships, very familiar family dynamics, witchcraft and a little sprinkle of romance. *I received an arc from NetGalley and the author, in exchange for an honest review!*

"Deep in Providence" is a slow-moving examination on love, grief, and loyalty wrapped in a coming-of-age tale. Following three teenagers as they attempt to come to terms with losing one of their own, "Deep in Providence" reckons with addiction, anger, sexuality, and unplanned pregnancy through the lens of a haunting. The girls meddle in magic, trying to bring their lost friend back to life, but something is stalking them from the shadows. All in all, I truly enjoyed this book. It's not about Big Plot - it follows their lives, the minutiae and the mundane - but deals with all the thorny strangeness of their emotions as they reckon with their families and their ambitions. "Deep in Providence" features a diverse cast and set of cultures, but is wonderfully rooted in a sense of place - that of Providence, Rhode Island. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes slower burns, who values character over a swiftly-moving plot.

This book is raw and gripping and emotional, and pulled so many feelings out of me while I was reading that the time seemed to just fly by. Jasmine dies in a car accident, but the girls aren't ready to let her go. The four of them have been practicing magic for a while now, spurred on by Milliani, who has been taught magic by her Filipino grandpa. But after Jasmine dies, the girls make a pact to try their biggest spell yet, bringing Jasmine back from the dead. But magic always comes with a cost, and the magic the three of them work starts to alter their lives. This is an amazing debut that deals with so many real world problems: addiction, loss, grief, teen pregnancy, immigration...etc., and it does it all while also exploring supernatural events that are at times, genuinely chilling. I loved how this book manages to portray magic as a subtle, but undeniable force, and there is a lot here that will stay with me for a long time.

Providence is my hometown and so this book already had a place in my heart. This is a book about magic, about friendship, and ultimately about being able to let go and move on even when it’s difficult. When Jasmine is killed in a car accident her three best friends are left reeling, and they are convinced that they can find a way to use magic to help her spirit find peace, and they’re willing to do this no matter what the cost is. Wow this is not a short buck, coming in at 480 pages, the length allows you to build a connection with each of the characters and become deeply invested in their journey and their struggles. It was so nice to see my hometown featured in such a great book.

Received an arc from Netgalley! Hoo boy, this was a feels trip. Waffling between ominous and heartbreaking, the characters driving my crazy one minute and then having me wanting to hug them the next. I think it was a little long, probably could’ve been a little more concise, but the chapters were short enough that it never felt like it dragged and considering this is the author’s debut, I definitely feel like I’m watching some incredible talent unfurl, I can only imagine what she’s going to have in store down the road
