She embodies this mission, and through her work, brings more kindness into our world every single day. Lady Gaga has always believed in the importance of being yourself, being kind to yourself, and being kind to others, no matter who they are or where they come from. With that sentiment in mind, she and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. And now, we invite you to read these stories and follow along as each and every young author finds their voice just as Lady Gaga has found hers. Within these pages, you’ll meet young changemakers who found their inner strength, who prevailed in the face of bullies, who started their own social movements, who decided to break through the mental health stigma and share how they felt, who created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and who have embraced kindness with every fiber of their being by helping others without the expectation of anything in return. In one story, you’ll read about a young person with an autoimmune disease, who after being bullied at school, learned how to practice self-love and started an organization with the mission of educating others about the importance of self-love, too; and in another story, you’ll meet a young person who decided to start a movement to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to talk about their feelings openly and honestly, a reminder that kindness and mental wellness go hand in hand. Not only were we moved by these individual acts of kindness, but we were also touched by the many stories of organizations, neighborhoods, and entire communities that fully dedicated themselves to helping those in need and found new, innovative ways to make our world a kinder and braver place. Individually and collectively, these stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

What I choose to read right now impacts my level of positivity in today’s world. Channel Kindness, by Born This Way Foundation Reporters & Lady Gaga, is just the book I needed to remember all the good in this world. The book, introduced by Lady Gaga, is a collection of 51 stories which emit positivity, resilience and kindness by today’s youth. Simply said, the book is uplifting and inspirational not only providing hope to today’s youth, but to all of us. The stories have been collected by Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, founded by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, and include a diverse population of youth represented. Stories include a man who sells food and drinks to businesses via an electric golf cart, and matches these sales in food in drink to the homeless and the story of a young woman who creates a friendship advocacy program which pairs individuals with challenges with someone in their peer group. These are just two of the stories we learn about in this book. I enjoyed the book and learning about each of the stories. This is not a book you want to binge read, however. I say this because the stories have greater meaning when the reader is allowed to reflect upon the information shared. I loved the fact that the stories told represented the most diverse population I’ve ever read. Furthermore, the individual stories often originated from adversity - bullying, mental health issues, isolation due to LGBTQ+ identification. The underlying theme of the book is that kindness provides a power to create positive change. I listened to the audiobook edition of the book which was narrated by Lady Gaga, Alex Aide, Aysha Mahmood, Connor Long, Cynthia Germanotta, Hanna Atkinson, Mitu Yilma & Shadille Estepan. Like the authors of the stories themselves, these narrators represent a vast range of diversity which made the narration more authentic and true to the authors.

“No matter how unfair or discouraging the world may seem at certain points, kindness is actually abundant at all times.” Lady Gaga’s story is incredible. Plagued by massive insecurities and health problems, she has openly struggled with PTSD and depression from enduring years of sexual abuse and bullying. Through it all, she believes in the importance of being kind to yourself and being kind to others. These stories are compiled into this collection, Channel Kindness, providing a space for these youth to share their stories. “Performing an act of kindness can redeem and heal you just as much as it can transform the person you choose to help.” Contained in these pages is proof of a kinder, braver world envisioned by Gaga over eight years ago. These are stories from around the globe of young people performing random acts of kindness, standing up for others, and finding the quiet courage it takes to stand up for themselves. Her goal was to make kindness “cool”. To validate the emotions of young people around the world and eliminate the stigma of mental health. She believes the voice of these young people matters because they are filled with hope, compassion, and commitment to community. “Being a kind and respectful friend includes opening your mind to other perspectives, pushing yourself to understand someone else even if you haven’t experienced the same things, and committing yourself to being there in a supportive capacity.”

These stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is about inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world. This would make a wonderful gift to a teen struggling with anxiety, depression, or identity. It provides hope and a path to freedom through loving others and giving back.

The ingenuity and compassion of so many teenagers and young adults in these stories makes me have hope for the future. A common theme in many of these stories was de-stigmatizing mental health illness and preventing suicide. I hope this new surge of awareness will allow more people the words to talk about their struggles and find the help/tools they need to survive and thrive. If you need a feel good book, pick this one up.

I appreciate the message of being kind and doing good for one another, but this should not have been a book. It is quite evident it was only published because of Lady Gaga. Each “chapter” felt more like reading a blog post instead of a flushed out story. Ended up skimming parts because it just didn’t hold my attention since you knew how each portion would end. Sometimes crossing mediums doesn’t always work out. Thank you to the publisher and Libro FM for my review copy - all thoughts are my own.

I can't stress this enough - this book is so much needed right now more than ever. Firstly, before I write anything more, let me quote Dua Lipa and say, "at the end of the day all I wanna say is, thank you Lady Gaga". Secondly, I have to thank the entire Channel Kindness+BTWF team that did an amazing job with this book. I don't believe the end credits and acknowledgments do you enough justice... this is such a rare kind of book. I'm so glad I chose to listen to its Audible version because it makes I can't stress this enough - this book is so much needed right now more than ever. Being brave and kind is something all of us are capable of. If you are the kind of person who wants to do more in the world/planet/community/humanity/society/friends/others - this book motivates you just the right amount. I think that hearing or reading about people sharing their stories and experiences with others is such an empowering thing. No matter where you live in 2020, you probably could use some more kindness spreading around you. So share this book, read this book, cry, laugh, during this book, let your friends know about it, make sure people know these stories. And I promise you, you can find many more stories like these all around you if you start looking. This read is exactly what I needed right now, and I have to say, I expected no less than that from Lady Gaga, momgerm, Maya and the BTWF. 5/5 no doubt!

The concept of sharing stories of kindness is uplifting, although the stories themselves touch on moments of hardship and darkness within each of the authors lives. Often times, the stories made my heart hurt, and took me a moment to process. These stories will stick with you, and give you hope for the next generation. A few quotes that stuck with me: "I'm okay with not being okay all the time" "Please try to be a friend to yourself no matter how hard that may be" Ways to support someone's mental health, say "Let me know how I can support you. I believe you. It's real and you can get through this" As interesting as the book is with the audiobook format, it may have been easier to distinguish between the stories reading a physical copy, or doing an immersive read (audiobook and physical copy together). A bit of the story read like bio descriptions of each non-profit organization involved (which are wonderful organizations) but I would have enjoyed hearing more of a personal connection to each organization. Thank you to Gaga and her amazing team, and all of the storytellers for sharing their stories, and spreading kindness throughout hard times! You are strong, resilient, and seen.

This book comes with a trigger warning - be conscious of the reader's age - as the stories in my opinion should not be shared with younger children - they are aimed at teens and above. I had to stop reading at times - in particular Scarlett Lewis's story which discusses her six-year-old son's death at Sandy Hook. As a mum of young children, I felt crushing pain for Scarlett and I admire her strength and resilience for choosing forgiveness. This is a story that I haven't been able to stop thinking about and it is on that I feel will stay with me for a very long time.

Let's face it, the last year has not been a good one for any of us has it? The Born This Way Foundation was founded by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta in an effort to support those who are struggling in this world. The hope is to spread more kindness in a world that needs this more than ever before. This is not a book about Lady Gaga but, I did find her particular story eye opening. I did not know that she was bullied and humiliated during her school years beginning at age 11. She has dealt with depression, anorexia, bulimia, anxiety and even cutting issues as a way to deal with stressful situations she encountered continuing into her 30s. There are over 50 very short stories of individuals who have faced life changing challenges and have found their voice and the courage to tell their story about how an unexpected random act of kindness made such a big difference in their lives. Some individuals have faced bullying, mental health issues, sexual assault, LBGTQ discrimination and other life altering adverse situations. This book is considered a YA genre and although some of the stories are sad, they are important and also uplifting as well. This is a book to be read in small doses, absorbed and not binge read. The message, help change someone's life, improve your community, help change the world by one small unexpected kind deed at a time. I'm so happy I came across this one.

I almost passed this audio book by I though it was just another popular rich celebrity writing a book on something they thought would sell since the word kindness seems to be in vogue right now. I could NOT have been more wrong and even though I am not a music person (more of a audio book person) Lady GAGA has my total appreciation for everything she does to help these people to voice their strengths and help in ways only they will probably ever know. I hope this book gets spread far and wide and everyone, no matter who, has the chance to read it, this book deserves to be set free. Be kind because kindness has not been cancelled, sometimes you might have to look hard for it, other times it might fall into your lap, but kindness is always there. #SmileForBert #WeNeedDiverseBooks

Lady Gaga has always been a trailblazer, someone I’ve admired in her industry. Her songs are all bops, but I’ve always appreciated her willingness to be herself, outside of the mold she is “supposed” to be in. When I was a gymnast in college, I had a mashup of Poker Face, Love Game and Just Dance for my floor music. I always tried to channel my inner Gaga since I wasn’t “meant” to compete on floor in college. It wasn’t my best event, but I always made sure I did my best even when I was doubted. Lady Gaga is well known, and most of the authors are young people. If I was going to share this book with students, I would break it up and read a story at a time. Maybe use it as a jumping off point for student writing. Highly recommend for grades 7 and up.

What an inspiring book this was! The book starts off with a message from Lady Gaga sharing a personal story of hers and I loved that her struggle led her to want to help others. What I loved is that people allowed themselves to be open and raw, to share things that happened to them personally, and name a stranger or friend who helped them deal with the situation. In the state we are in right now it feels like everyone is turning on each other and also going through so much. I would love to see people put themselves out there and help someone who needs it the most.

I marked it down a star only because the book is based primarily around American charities and organisations, so may be less helpful to the UK readers, although the message still stands. Also, I found a lot of the stories a little repetitive, but still read each one as it was an interesting read

This book is everything. I have finished it all and will read it again and again each time I need a pick-me-up. They are not only the future, but they are our present, and I believe wholeheartedly that reading this book will show them the power they hold. 10/10 truly.

This is kind of like a "chicken soup for the soul" type book where each chapter is a different story told by a teenager or young adult about ways they are helping to spread kindness. That being said some of the stories had difficult topics - rape, suicide, etc., so just be warned of that. It is inspiring to hear people want to make a difference and set out to do that, especially the younger generation. It's definitely something that's much needed in 2020. I listened to the audiobook and there were a lot of different stories - I believe around 50 in this book. Some of them started to blend together. I think maybe a shorter, more concise book would be more effective in making some of these stories stand out a bit better.

I'm biased...one of my essays is published in this wonderful anthology, a piece I wrote at age 15, back in the day, (eek) about street harassment, its fundamental disconnect from kindness, and a specific organization called Hollaback aiming to resist and fight its pervasiveness. Participating in, working for, Channel Kindness was an extraordinary experience for an anxious teenage queer mess such as myself and right now, when we are very much in need of manifestoes-against-despair, this anthology I'm biased...one of my essays is published in this wonderful anthology, a piece I wrote at age 15, back in the day, (eek) about street harassment, its fundamental disconnect from kindness, and a specific organization called Hollaback aiming to resist and fight its pervasiveness. This book is exactly what I needed. My motto has always been “Be Kind.” To read such inspirational stories really lifted me out of the COVID-19 and political mayhem that we are currently in with 2020. This book has 51+ stories about kindness. People who do kind things, started organizations, or just received a kind act. I learned so much about organizations, people, kindness, and doing kind things for others without anything in return. It is inspiring to read through these stories. I think we could all use a little extra kindness these days, and especially as we head into the next few weeks. This book is the perfect reminder that there are good and kind people in this world. Especially during times like now when a lot of us feel hopeless, and lost, and heartbroken by the state of country, this book is the perfect pick me up. The stories were incredibly inspiring. Now let’s vote him out!! Don’t forget to get out and vote November 3rd!

The book has an excellent mission, that of cataloguing multiple stories of people who took it upon themselves to start little programs to help disabled, minorities, etc. Might have been better as a print copy that is used as a reference book. As an audiobook, hearing FIFTY stories, they all seemed to be identical by the end, without much cohesion.

To be honest I don’t remember 98% of this book. Most of it went in one ear and out the other. While listening there were a few stories that gave me pause but nothing that was Earth shattering. I think I should have read a physical copy and read just one story here and there. I might have absorbed and appreciated it more.

Reflections and lessons learned: Cheesy but true - “kindness costs nothing but is priceless”. Simple messages - why not fill empty space with kindness and reflection? We all need a healing blanket now and again

Full of thought-provoking and awareness raising stories from teenagers. Full of ideas about how small everyday acts you can do might change someone's day for the better. Great read for teens especially.
