This is a perfect book for anyone looking for cheap but still effective ways to eat healthy and tasty. I never was on the KETO diet, but I was aware of it being expensive and complicated. This book completely changed my mind. I loved the author's intro about her struggles with weight and overall explanations of what is KETO and tips and tricks she shared from her personal experience. I definitely marked some recipes to try them out. Before I was 10 minutes into this cookbook I was making a mental list of all the people I know who I could gift this book to. I am excited to share it as much as I am excited to cook from it. Usually I do an initial scan of a cookbook and become overwhelmed with the amount of new things I need to get at the grocery store or the amount of time each recipe will take. Not so with this book. I can make almost all the recipes without a trip to the grocery. The recipes are very time efficient as well. Well so far I have had an easy time making these recipes vegetarian - plus there are many that are vegetarian. Favorite recipe so far.. SOS BOND BISCUITS AND GRAVY love. It. If you are interested or are currently on a keto diet this book is a great way to get into it and to expand your comfort zone recipes. Enjoy!

The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Dirt Cheap Cookbook is a new tutorial and recipe collection for frugal keto cooks. Due out 15th Sept 2020 from Simon & Schuster on their Adams Media imprint, it's 224 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. The introduction covers the basics of the keto lifestyle/diet, including a basic primer on ketosis, macronutrients, tips, ingredients, tools, supplies, how-to, pantry lists and shopping tips, along with an inspiring author background bio. She emphasizes that it's not necessary to spend a ton of money and track every mouthful to be successful at weight loss and maintenance. I found her encouraging and you-can-do-it style of writing engaging and fun. There's also a short, concise subchapter on food handling and safety, which was welcome. The following chapters include the recipes arranged roughly by category: breakfast, soups & salads, snacks, pizza, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts & drinks. The table of contents lists each recipe along with symbols giving a visual guide to different real-life situations (recipes for "hangry" moments, for picky eaters, lacto-ovo vegetarian-ish dishes, superstar keto dishes etc - quite humorous but also *true*). Ingredient measurements are supplied in American standard measurements only. There's a conversion chart for metric measures in the appendices. The prep costs, net carbs, servings, prep-time and tips and options are listed in well laid out sidebars. The ingredients are listed in a bullet list followed by step by step directions. The author does recommend real-world timesavers like using premade taco powder (she gleefully informs us that she'll make her own as soon as she's done making butter from her grass fed pet cow). Allied recipes (included) are referenced in the recipes to save time by using leftovers from one recipe in another recipe. The recipes are drawn from a surprisingly broad number of world cuisines - Asian, southwestern, Tex-Mex, Cajun, European, etc. Inspiring real life quotes and thoughts are highlighted in yellow in the text, giving readers an extra little boost. Some readers might find the cheerleading over the top, but I found the author's voice very encouraging and friendly. I found myself thinking "wow, she really gets it". This really felt like a keto-friendly cookbook for me: short on time/money, impatient with impossible-to-source "weird" ingredients, and cooking for myself and a family of non-keto eaters. I found it impressive and pretty easy to follow. A small real-life occurrence - my endocrinologist said at my last visit I was his ONLY patient who had actually gone DOWN in weight since lockdown. That made me feel good. Five stars. I really liked this one. One codicil, there are very few pictures included in the book. The dishes and serving suggestions which are included are attractive and appropriate, however. Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

I always enjoy the way that the Author, Stephanie Laska writes. I see some other reviews where they feel that she is too repetitive. I like that she reminds us about how much she has lost. She is proud of herself and she is what keeps me motivated! When I was hitting close to 260 lbs back in 2018, I turned to the internet to figure out a ‘new way of eating lifestyle’. When I was hitting close to 260 lbs back in 2018, I turned to the internet to figure out a ‘new way of eating lifestyle’. I wasn’t looking for a temporary diet. I wasn’t looking for a way of eating that was going to break the bank or where I would have to deprive myself of real food. I found her and have been following her ever since! I successfully lost 55 lbs my first time around but quarantine had a separate route for me to take. I gained back 25 of those lbs due to not making the best food choices and not being as mobile while stuck in the house. I was excited when I saw that this book is going to be available in September! I’m previewing the advanced reader copy and I absolutely love it! I read the first 50 pages this morning and I like the recaps from her previous books and the way that she lists specifics. DLK is such an easy way of life and it doesn’t take much to get started. The recipes in this book look very tasty and are so easy to prepare. Not to mention, very affordable. There are tips on each recipe that are very helpful and she’s done the legwork for you with computing the net carbs which is all I count. It’s very simple, easy to follow and a very good read! I always look forward to what Stephanie has up her sleeve. Very well written and I know that I will continually reference this book time after time. I highly recommend you read this book if you’re looking for easy meal ideas that are easy to prepare and you don’t want to break the bank. I promise that she keeps you motivated the entire way through! You won’t be disappointed!

There are multiple introductions to this book. It's nice to get to know the author, but I felt like I could've probably done with 1 Intro rather than like, 3. Also, the author repetitively reminds us about her 140-pound weight loss (which she's kept off for 7 years and counting!) pretty much every other paragraph. What she did was amazing - and I understand why she's plugging it, it's "proof" that her recipes work, right? But at a certain point, enough is enough. Similarly, we are constantly reminded that these recipes won't break the bank and they're made of "REAL FOOD" (trying to differentiate her recipes from other diets perhaps??). But by the end of the intro(s) I felt like I'd been beaten over the head because all of this had all been repeated so many times. I can see why this "chatty" method of writing could be appealing to some people who are looking for some hand-holding on their journey to weight loss. The writing has a lot of capitalizations, so I can "hear" the author talking to me, and it feels like she's having a conversation with me rather than writing a book in a more formal tone. I'm reading this for informative purposes rather than life-changing purposes, so maybe I'd feel supported and inspired rather than annoyed if I were reading it as a self-help book (because I'm 2 chapters in and it feels more like that than a cookbook so far). Ok, we're on page 54 (Chapter 4) and the recipes have now begun! There's a little method for giving "awards" to different recipes to identify them as good for picky eaters and almost-vegetarian/vegan but they aren't very visually appealing, nor do the pictures relate to what their meaning is so it's hard for me to remember what they mean, especially because the explanations were introduced like...20 pages before the recipes actually began. Not functional. The author has nice tips and tricks included next to each recipe, but the formatting looks like a template out of Microsoft Powerpoint (you can tell from the cover that graphic design is going to be lacking in this book, but worth pointing out I think). The pictures themselves are fine-good. On a final, personal note, I didn't realize that keto was SO nut heavy. As someone with a peanut/tree-nut allergy, my takeaway from this book is that I could never survive off keto because basically every recipe has almond milk or almond flour in it. I'm not sure how accurate this actually is, because my fiance used to do keto and as far as I know he wasn't cooking with almond flour/milk constantly, so not sure what's up with that, but it made pretty much every recipe a non-starter for me. Going to give this one a 2/5 for the reasons listed above, but I can definitely see how others might rate this higher (different mindset, no nut allergy). Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed this book- yes, it's a diet book and diet books aren't really that fun, but the author has an approach that is straightforward, funny at times, and educational. The author doesn't take herself too seriously and writes like I assume she would talk, which is really engaging. She is also credible, having lost a huge amount of weight on this diet. She has a guide that "awards" recipes for being things like "fancy enough for guests" or OK for "picky eaters", which helps in deciding what you want to cook. I didn't see anything that wasn't easy to follow. Overall, this is a refreshing read in the world of cookbooks and I'd recommend for those who do a keto diet, or have been intimidated to try in the past. The Dirty, Lazy Keto Dirt Cheap Cookbook means what it says in the title. It’s dirty because it doesn’t strictly follow the keto diet rules. It’s keto because there are less than 10 grams of net carbs per serving. Dirt cheap means less than $10 per meal with at least four servings. Sounds good? Read on. There are 100 recipes included in the cookbook from breakfasts to desserts. Some of my favorites are the beautiful “Tycoon Titanic Wedge Salad”, the innovative “Clearance Cheetos Cheese Sticks” (cheese coated with more cheese and crushed Cheetos), and the super simple but delicious “Treat Yo’ Self Tomato Soup”. I also appreciate the “Red Lobster Bargain Biscuits”. They will save me a fortune over the Red Lobster branded gluten-free boxed mix that I have been using! My only complaint is that only about a third of the recipes have a photo. I would really have liked to see what buns made from cheese would look like in the “Scratch the Egg Fast Sandwich” recipe. Speaking of that recipe, as a long-time gluten-free eater, I appreciate the author’s creative bread alternatives. She creates egg tortillas, pork rind pizza crust, cheese sandwich rolls, and jalapeno hot dog buns. The jokes in the book add to the fun (kudos for making me think any diet is “fun”). In addition to the imaginative recipe names, the “Bourbon Borrowed Smokies” recipe requires two shots of bourbon, “one for the recipe and one for you!” I don’t know if I will go full keto. Or even Dirty, Lazy Keto. However, I will be making some of these recipes and using the bread substitutes for other items that I will create. They sound tasty and are definitely Dirt Cheap. If you want to add some humor and healthy recipes to your diet or are committed to being casually keto (either now or on January 1st), the Dirty, Lazy Keto Dirt Cheap Cookbook is a great starting point. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars! Thanks to Adams Media and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Solid keto book. I requested it right away when I saw an advance reader copy on Netgalley and the publishers were kind enough to provide a free digital review copy in exchange for an honest review as I eat keto myself. I love that this book really focuses on the style of keto where you stick within your macros - mostly net carbs - and then there's no judgement. I don't love the term "dirty, lazy keto" (I really don't like "clean eating" either, but at least "dirty keto" reclaims the other side) Solid keto book. I don't love the term "dirty, lazy keto" (I really don't like "clean eating" either, but at least "dirty keto" reclaims the other side) . But I love the attitude. Diets often come with a healthy degree of shaming, and this book promotes doing your best and approaching keto eating from a healthy standpoint without naming and shaming for any perceived indiscretions on the diet. I also like the author's tone, though this isn't a particularly narrative nor instructive book (fine by me, I've read lots of keto things already). It mostly gets down to the nitty gritty of how to do "dirty, lazy keto" ...on the cheap. It's true that keto doesn't have to be expensive and I like that this book really promotes that. Like the tip "never buy anything with the name keto". I did find the names of the recipes, all named after money saving, a bit cheesy and sometimes confusing, but I could deal. And the recipes themselves? Decent! You have some keto internet classics like chaffles (Last Chance Chocolate Chip Chaffle, and others) and egg roll in a bowl (Open Enrollment Egg Roll), but also some interesting recipes I hadn't thought of or find particularly interesting and will definitely try out like: a chicken chili, which I never make (Chump Change Chili), hot mulled cider using apple cider vinegar and spices (Hot Mullet Market Cider), no-rice gumbo (Elopin' on a Shoestring Gumbo), and a very tasty looking trail mix (Trust Fund Trail Mix). Overall: I like it! I'll check out the author's other books.

I was thrilled to be chosen to preview this book. I have loved all of Stephanie Laska’s previous offerings. She’s done it again!! Great job, Stephanie, on putting out another down-to-earth, basic cookbook for REAL LIFE and REAL PEOPLE. The recipes are great, many of which I can’t wait to try. Each of the recipes comes in under 10 grams of net carbs per serving and $10 or less per meal. I think one of the best benefits of the Dirt Cheap Cookbook is the first three chapters, before the recipes even begin. She offers so much practical advice on keeping costs down and keeping your keto lifestyle going. You can find tips for grocery shopping and what to keep on hand in your pantry, all geared toward helping you be successful on your Dirty, Lazy, Keto lifestyle. There is a helpful copy of Stephanie’s DLK Food Pyramid, making it easy to visualize the best eating choices for DLK weight loss. The recipes themselves are straightforward and easy to follow, using easily obtained ingredients. She also offers tips and suggested substitutions for each recipe. Recipes are grouped by category including Breakfast, Soups and Salads, Snacks, Pizza, Side Dishes, Main Dishes, and Desserts and Drinks. There is a group of icons attached to each ingredient to indicate specific attributes of the recipe. You’ll find Reboot (suited for making extra to be used for part of another meal), I’m Hangry (high fiber, large portion meals), Picky Eaters (crowd pleasing favorites), Fancy Enough For Guests (looks impressive and tastes great), Vegetarian-Ish (meatless, but may contain dairy or eggs) and Keto Superstars (super keto recipes). Stephanie proves once again, “you don’t have to be perfect to be successful.” I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to start eating healthier, keto or not. Thanks for another job well done, Stephanie. You ROCK!!

Do you ever feel like it’s too expensive to do keto? Stephanie Laska has compiled a cookbook full of recipes that prove that belief wrong! Family-friendly meals for less than $10 to make and less than 10g of net carbs per serving. What?! No running to the store to buy something that you use 1/60 of the bottle and never use the rest. If you’ve gotten into a rut with your meals, snacks, drinks, or desserts, this cookbook will give you a nice variety that you want right now. I found very few recipes that I wasn’t interested in trying. I am in love with the breakfast section. I skip early morning eating, but still love breakfast food during the noon hour. I will definitely try the festive drinks for the coming up holiday season: Hot Mullet Market Cider and Wonder If I Won Eggnog. The first 50 pages are helpful for beginners or those new to Stephanie’s approach. What I love about Stephanie Laska’s approach to Keto is that you don’t have to be perfect to see results. She has lost and kept off 140 pounds while eating a moderate range of carbs instead of the strict limits as you’ll find with strict keto. The only downside I found to this cookbook is that you no longer have an excuse to not follow Keto!  Thank you, Stephanie Laska, Adams Media, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

The DIRTY LAZY KETO Dirt Cheap Cookbook is an everything you could ever need or want to know book about the Keto diet and Stephanie Laska is an expert. After laying out the groundwork for beginning a keto diet, the recipe section follows. Organized somewhat traditionally by meal type, these recipes are far from traditional! Creatively named and illustrated by photographs that will make your mouth water, each recipe also tells you whether it makes a double batch, is especially for picky eaters, fancy enough for guests or for a night when you’re extra hungry. My favorite Keto snacks include Rent Money (Pepper)’Roni Chips and Trust Fund Trail Mix. There’s a wonderfully simple soup recipe - Treat Yo’ Self Tomato Soup and I can’t wait to try Red Lobster Bargain Biscuits. Whether you are a Keto veteran or just want to try it out, this is the cookbook for you! Enjoy! 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, and Stephanie and William Laska for this ARC.

The beginning of the book has lots of tips and tricks that are really helpful to someone just starting out. There is an expination of how important fiber is, getting enough Magnesium in your diet to avoid muscle cramps and the "Keto Flu". For those worried that alcohol is a no-go on Keto, there is even an awesome Sangria recipe. I am actually even thinking of getting a waffle maker, as the Chaffles look really good. Can't say if they are, as I have never had them. Bonus is that all the recipes are under 10g of carbs per serving and most are suitable for the very beginning phase where you only eat 20g of carbs per day. I know that sounds IMPOSSIBLE, but I can't tell you how much better I feel and know if I have gone over what I should have. I have lost 40 pounds and have gone from a 22/24 pants to an 18. If you are just starting this is the cookbook for you.

This cookbook changes everything!! Stephanie Laska’s first book changed my life. I needed to lose weight and couldn’t figure out what exactly I could and could not eat to make that happen. Dirty, Lazy Keto explained it all. I have lost 60 lbs so far and still have more to go. One of the difficult parts of any diet is finding recipes that are simple, affordable and still taste good. One of the difficult parts of any diet is finding recipes that are simple, affordable and still taste good. Keto is often very expensive and the extra costs are often reasons why people can’t stick with the diet. Also, one of the most asked questions I hear is ‘what exactly do I eat? I need recipes or a meal plan’. This book helps with all of that! She explains how to read labels, how to calculate net carbs and she has amazing recipes with the net carbs and nutritional information already figured out for us. Plus, she also has the costs per meal and per serving set out as well so we not only know how many carbs but what cost as well. She makes it easy to stick to your macros while sticking to your budget. One of my favorite things about her recipes is that they are varied across different cultures. I grew up in Hawaii and have a very diverse palette and this cookbook suits me perfectly. She even has a Keto friendly Loco Moco!

If you want to go on a strict Keto/low carb diet, do not venture here! Ha! This book is for those who are not on this type of lifestyle for therapeutic reasons. They do not really tell you what the dish will be all about. I like my titles simple and to the point. Thank you Netgalley and Adams Media for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.

Author Stephanie Laska has written a number of books and The DIRTY LAZY KETO DIRT CHEAP COOKBOOK focuses on the very affordable end of the keto spectrum. There is definitely an audience for this book. Laska already realizes the wide appeal of dirty lazy keto, meaning an approach that only tracks net carbs rather than a whole host of other factors. The cookbook is filled with useful recipes that family members not on keto can enjoy. She focuses on everyday ingredients that we all use. I found the recipe names annoying and almost Depression Era-like. But that would be my only criticism and it seems picky of me. There really isn’t a brain-free version of keto but this cookbook gets pretty close. At least it gets a keto diet close to maintenance within a regular lifestyle. It’s a great addition for interested cooks and dieters.I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

The book “Dirty Lazy, Keto Dirt-Cheap Cookbook” is such an amazing easy cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, ingredients that you have in your kitchen, and short. It provides Us/Metric conversion charts. Overall, I recommend this cookbook to a beginner to advanced keto way of life eater.

I've been eating this way for almost 2 years now, Dirty Lazy Keto (DLK) has changed my life, but sometimes I get stuck in a rut of the same meals over and over. I know this will probably sound weird to some, but I get overwhelmed with information easily. Sometimes I want to try something new on DLK, but by the time I read all the recipes I find, I am so confused by which one to follow or what to make, I just give up and continue with the same meals I've been making.
