Author Dean Burrell offers young readers his ideal starting lineup in 12 chapters, with bios and stats for his ideal righty/left pitchers, catcher, first, second, third basemen, shortstop, left, center, and right field, designated hitter, and manager. Though he focuses on 12 individuals, there are 98 short bios of baseball greats in this book. Burrell knows his stuff! Each chapter begins with a two-page full color "baseball card" of the featured athlete: each "starting lineup" character played professionally until the 2000s (between 2001-2019.) Every major bio also includes a "fast facts" box of highlights. While Baseball Biographies for Kids mentions Legendary Greats such as Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig, they aren't the focus of the book. Instead, we learn about players that are more current; we learn about those who haven't been the feature of many books yet. What a refreshing change. I love the diversity: we hear about baseball players from Cuba, Japan, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic and learn about baseball in those countries as well. We learn about a couple women who are working for more gender equality in baseball, and we learn about players who have overcome physical challenges and disabilities. The references section offers websites to explore for all the bios, as well as a few books. Near the end of the book is a two-page full-color illustration of the oldest major league baseball stadium, and a two-page full-color form for the reader to draft his/her own ideal starting lineup. The back cover says: "Grand Slam! Inspiring baseball biographies for young fans". This would have made a great title! My background: I am not a sports person, but family members are. I requested a review copy from Callisto Publishing to broaden my horizons and learn more. I enjoyed this book, and know that my family members would as well.

This is an impressive book on baseball that will be a home run for kids who are interested baseball. It gave me a bit of information that I didn’t know. The book is laid out with the chapters by player’s positions. Within each position a player is introduced in section like legendary greats, spot light, beating the odds, honorable mentions, and players around the world. You have “Righty Pitchers” and the focus is on Tom Seaver. I liked how the book has baseball cards on the pages that lay out all the facts and stats of the player. It also has quotes from the player on the card along with a photo on a two page spread. The graphics of the cards are eye catching. The players mentioned in the book have a short biography with some fast facts in boxes to highlight certain accomplishments. I enjoyed the section on Justine Siegal about her becoming the first female coach in MLB history. Who knew-surely not me. There are a lot of stats throughout and a lot of stories about some of the most influential players in the game. The back of the book you can draft your own all-star team with a lineup sheet for each position. This book will knock it out of the park for big baseball players and those interested in the sport! I received a copy of this product from Callisto Publisher's in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review.

Thank you Callisto Publisher's Club and Rockridge Press for this free book! The following review contains my honest opinions. I really appreciated the organization of this book: the book is organized by players positions within the game (positions include both righty pitchers and lefty pitchers, and the manager). One other fascinating aspect throughout this book is the worldly impact of baseball: a short, comprehensive history of baseball in both Cuba and Japan is included. Each biography is short enough to capture and maintain my 4 years old's interest. I personally felt the writing included too many statistics, but my son seemed to enjoy the statistics despite my inability to adequately explain said statistics. However, this did allow for a family experience because my husband was often recruited to explain the statistics and answer the questions inspired by this read.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This book was very interesting to read. It was written very well where I didn't feel like i was just reading a bunch of statistics. It was broken down into positions and also had some legendary players. It focused on their achievements on and off the field which I felt was great to stress the importance of being an all around good person. It was very easy to find what you were looking for. The print was easy to read, and there are pictures of some of the players within the book. My son was very excited when I received it and was upset when I told him I needed to read it so I could write a review on it before I gave it to him. As soon as I gave it to him he started reading it right away. I would recommend this for any kid that loves baseball.
