As the series progresses, I’m more and more conflicted about it. It’s true that there a lot of cute things, but there are also annoying things things such as Hananoi’s behavior. It’s okay to be jealous, but Hananoi’s jealousy is whole other level. Hotaru can’t even give a high five to Yao. Moreover, we learned in the previous volume that Hananoi went to grade school with Yao and Hotaru and he has been keeping this information, on purpose, from Hotaru since they “met”. When he wants to tell her about it, Hotaru says that even if they are a couple, they don’t have to say everything to each other. Even though I agree with Hotaru and I liked that the author include this conversation in the manga, I still think that it is used as an excuse in order to push back the revelation. Except that, we had a chapter on Yao-kun, on how he met Hotaru which was really cute. I’m glad that the two rekindle their relationship even though, I guess this will lead to a love triangle. I liked their friendship and I wish that more shojo portrayed normal relationships between boys and girls without one of them loving the other one.

Yes to healthy relationships! Yes to kissing with consent! (Unlike some other mangas in which attacking the girl is considered cool!) & finally, yes to cute boys :)

4.5 cute stars. Tension is building with the secret from the dude's past while cuteness develops. I think I may know what it is, but arg! I hope I'm wrong. 4.5 cute stars. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I'd like to see how the author reveals their pasts, which are much more entwined than Hotaru realizes. At some point his grandmother mentioned that Hananoi insisted on moving out when he got to HS, so I wonder if he intended to go to the same school as Hotaru, or if that is unrelated and it is a happy coincidence they met again. It certainly sounds as if he tried to date several times (well, that's how she first sees him, getting dumped), so he probably wasn't carrying a torch all these years. It did give an impression that he wanted very much to comfort her when her hair was cut, but was incapable of making a move. If she was as sunny and bright as Yao described her, he also was probably aware of her and possibly attracted to her personality even if he didn't talk to her back then. I do have to say that in HS, I barely even thought of things that happened in elementary. Is it normal to have this much angst over events that occurred so long ago (approximately 25% of your life ago!)?

FINALLY! Finally... they kiss for REAL... ...and more than once! However, the not-so-secret secret still hasn't been revealed to Hotaru. And Yao is barking up Hananoi's tree about it, insisting he needs to come clean to Hotaru, about what he saw in secret, that fateful day so many years ago. What is going to happen next? Oh, and did I mention that Hotaru & Hananoi finally kiss? Boy, do they ever! More than once! Sometimes a heavy rainstorm leads to good things... I love this story! Art, so cute. FINALLY! Dialogue, straight from the heart, so frank & honest. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, admirable, adorable. You can't help but pull for these two!

Cute, but clinically so… ★★★½☆ If you read my other reviews, you realize that I have issues with this story. I now understand why. There is a clinical, methodical, by-the-numbers feel to their relationship. It’s compartmentalized. If Hotaru and Hananoi suddenly declared Tuesday was kissing day, and sharing feelings was only allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays, I wouldn’t be surprised. The main characters also have inconsistencies that align more with plot lines than actual personalities. If Hotaru and Hananoi suddenly declared Tuesday was kissing day, and sharing feelings was only allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays, I wouldn’t be surprised. The main characters also have inconsistencies that align more with plot lines than actual personalities. Hananoi is cripplingly shy and reserved until the scene calls for unbridled passion. Hotaru is perfectly understanding until she is supposed to be bad at communicating. Cynically speaking, if Hotaru isn’t being used as the plot brake, could it be that I have misunderstood things? Could I have been so fixated on Hananoi being an axe murderer that I missed that he was the only convincingly human character in the story, and Hotaru is the true sociopath? But what do I know? It’s just a manga, and I have my own compartmentalizations. Today I allow myself to clean the bathroom sink, as if it didn’t need to be cleaned the other six days of the week. On a final note, making out in school on the floor is all fun and games until a teacher walks in. I would never admit if that was spoken from personal experience.

2020 Read #520 Distance makes the heart grow fonder! I haven’t been the biggest fan of this series, particularly because Hananoi’s character has rankled me a bit in the past, but...dammit, there were so many adorable moments in this volume! I won’t spoil *what* exactly happens, but I warmed up to Hananoi and his relationship with Hotaru. I just really hope that my feelings will grow more and more when I see these two interact and grow beside one another.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I’m so sad that this is going to be a digital only since I’d absolutely buy this series, for my manga collection if it were to be a physical release. I’m so happy with the progress that way made for Hananoi-kun and Hotaru’s relationship. Also, I know that Yao-kun is supposed to be a future love rival but I really like him. I think he should stick to being Hotaru’s friend, but I like him.

Morino has done it again, this volume is beautiful. I adore the character development that Hananoi-kun is going through, it's so natural and doesn't feel rushed. I think that really adds to the appeal of this manga. We understand that Hananoi is still finding a way to start accepting others, but that is not a process that happens overnight. Though he does still seem very cold towards Yao-kun, it will be interesting to see how their relationship will progress. Though he does still seem very cold towards Yao-kun, it will be interesting to see how their relationship will progress. I love it when we get a flashback and see little Hotaru, she is so cute. All she wanted to do is help out a friend in need and she hasn't changed in that sense, she is still super helpful... and cute. Her middle school friend, Yao-kun, is a really interesting character because he is similar to Hotaru in the sense that he too is a little dense when it comes to romance. He gives compliments freely that are sometimes misinterpreted by girls as him hitting on them. This looks like it has always caused misunderstandings for him, like in middle school. It goes into a bit more detail this volume on how he accidently leads girls on because he doesn't understand romance. The scene where Hotaru calls Hananoi by his first name lives rent free in my brain, I literally think of it once a week and it makes me so happy. >///<.
