    Well that was fun! This anthology of has some of the best selections from its short run of EC Comics of the late 1940s to the early 1950s. The most famous legacy of EC Comics is the Tales from the Crypt horror television series. As far as the American comic genre goes, this short period was certainly one of its most influential. In addition to horror, stories include science fiction—a remarkable number are adaptations of Ray Bradbury stories, war, crime, and social themes few others would touch Well that was fun! This anthology of has some of the best selections from its short run of EC Comics of the late 1940s to the early 1950s. The most famous legacy of EC Comics is the Tales from the Crypt horror television series. As far as the American comic genre goes, this short period was certainly one of its most influential. In addition to horror, stories include science fiction—a remarkable number are adaptations of Ray Bradbury stories, war, crime, and social themes few others would touch with subjects ranging from racism, lynching, and crooked police. Considering all the “good old days” and “time of innocence” that revisionists use to describe America in the 1950s, these stories—one would guess the audience was largely pre-to-post-pubescent males—are remarkably honest and not prone to have happy endings. Taken together, these selections provide an interesting insight into the American psyche in the early 50s, when the Korean War, the possibilities of science, and the Cold War dominated public life. It wasn’t as innocent as some memories would have us believe. Actually, that’s not right, what makes most of these comics so good is that it’s obvious the writer treats the reader like a thinking adult. Like so many good things, EC was driven out of business largely because of the harassment of the reactionary congressional committees that seemed to define much of 1950s America. The publisher figured it just wasn’t worth the effort and decided to focus on another magazine of theirs called Mad. If that doesn't vouch for the quality of EC Comics, I don't know what does. Lastly, not that I’m an expert in any way, it’s also interesting to compare the comics of American and European, or more precisely, those with Belgian/French roots, which are the ones with which I’m most familiar. I prefer the latter, but as far as American comics go, this is a pretty good anthology.

    You forget how good EC Comics were until you reread some of the best stories in a collection such as Choke Gasp! the Best of 75 Years of EC Comics. Some of these stories will haunt you for days. Having only read the Shock Suspenstories and Crime Suspenstories comics, there was quite a bit in Choke Gasp! I hadn't read. The title 75 years of EC Comics is a bit misleading since the comic book stories contained therein span the years 1950 to 1956.

Já a EC não sobreviveu. A estética da EC, que diga-se, foi muito replicada mas mal imitada pelos seus concorrentes, esteve no centro das cruzadas lideradas por William Gaines, um psicólogo de capacidade duvidosa que encontrou no pânico moral anti-comics uma oportunidade de carreira. E não lhe foi difícil usar a violência macabra do horror da EC para agitar a opinião pública, que se assustou quando percebeu que as criancinhas estavam a ler bandas desenhadas cheias de cabeças decepadas, monstros deformados, facínoras que sofrem punições irónicas, ou relatos de combate que em vez de mostrar uma visão heróica da guerra, a mostravam como violenta, inútil e devoradora de homens. Os argumentos foram essencialmente aqueles que ouvimos sempre que há pânicos morais com criações culturais e novos media: o efeito negativo sobre o cérebro das crianças e adolescentes destes conteúdos. Soa familiar? É o que se diz hoje dos smartphones, ou se dizia dos videojogos. Reunidos neste volume estão algumas das melhores histórias da curta mas fulgurante EC. Colige contos retirados de vários dos seus títulos clássicos, entre o terror, a ficção científica, o crime e a guerra. A sua linha condutora é o atrevimento em ir mais além. O horror é visceral e tétrico, o crime mórbido, violento e irónico. A guerra é sangrenta e desoladora. E a ficção científica é inteligente, embora mescle elementos de crime e horror. Para lá dos argumentos excelentes, há o estilo icónico de ilustradores como John Severin, Alex Toth ou Jack Williamson. Ou seja, não são só as histórias, é a mestria estética do grafismo. Por entre as histórias da antologia, podemos encontrar pérolas como adaptações de contos de Ray Bradbury, ou a pérola que é Master Race, uma à época polémica história sobre o holocausto. Não admira que a EC tivesse sido queimada no fogo carreirista do pânico de Gaines. Atrevia-se a dar a ler histórias sobre futuros fantásticos, deliciar o leitor com horror macabro, ou recordar os horrores reais da História, sem paninhos quentes. Ao contrário de muito do que foi publicado pelos concorrentes, e dos comics clássicos, o trabalho desenvolvido sob a égide da EC aguenta o teste do tempo, lê-se hoje ainda como refrescante, intrigante e provocador.

    A rich collection of a lot (a LOT!) of horror comics, with some suspense, SciFi, and war comics to go along. A handful were adapted from Ray Bradbury short stories. This was my first exposure to EC and I was thoroughly entertained. The book is filled to the brim with effective story-twists and lucid visions: the dead rise once more, exerting cruel vengeance on those who wronged them in life; the living prove to be no less vicious in their revenge-taking; villages turn desolate at sundown, for the A rich collection of a lot (a LOT!) of horror comics, with some suspense, SciFi, and war comics to go along. A handful were adapted from Ray Bradbury short stories. This was my first exposure to EC and I was thoroughly entertained. The book is filled to the brim with effective story-twists and lucid visions: the dead rise once more, exerting cruel vengeance on those who wronged them in life; the living prove to be no less vicious in their revenge-taking; villages turn desolate at sundown, for the villagers know there are vampires among them; the radio warns of escaped mental patients; soldiers kill with and without purpose; criminals escape the police, only to find a far worse fate; butchers, faced with wartime austerity, stock their stores with some creative meats; desperate lovers revive their dead spouses, soon coming to regret it; one similarly desperate fellow employs a love potion, guess how that works out for him; overambitious scientists attempt to revive a mummy, and succeed beyond their wildest dreams; a comic-addicted boy dreams up an alien friend, or does he; detectives get caught in their clients' murderous schemes; astronauts descend onto faraway planets, wholly unprepared for what awaits them; time travelers face grave danger when hunting dinosaurs; and; and; and... The drawings that illustrate these mad fantasies never disappoint. Each artist has their own distinctive style, and the stories are set up to highlight their strengths - for example, some of these fellows can make flesh looks so rotten that you can smell it through the page.

    YES!! The comics I grew up with as a kid! The ones who molded me during my most formative years! Great volume of some of the best horror comics in history. Such a wonderful stroll down memory lane. If you aren't familiar with horror comics, do yourself a favor and read this!
