When some character's grand past is mentioned, you think it'll be, I don't know, grand and stuff? That's what I thought whenever I read of Maxim's conquest of the Blood Coast in the original trilogy. Reading about said conquests in these graphic novellas, I don't feel wholly vowed. It feels rather meh, to tell the truth. Maybe because each issue is super short. Also, as far as I was concerned, Rowan lost a fight he was perfectly able to win.

And Rowan just gives up? I don't... why!?! This makes no sense at all.

“Haven’t you figured out yet? The space between truth and legend.” What a great ending to this comic series! I freaking loved it. It was such a fantastic addition to the Shades of Magic world. I hope there’s more.

Overall really liked this storyline. Love the artwork, and the world of course. Excited for the bindup collection to come out so that I can read the entire thing in one go.

this whole comic series was underwhelming. I think it would have translated better as a novella. Things happened too fast. There wasn't enough build-up for actions.

Been an interesting set of comics, wonder if Ve Schwab will develop another set around the series.

This was a great ending to the graphic novel series, and I love how everything was resolved. While I wish there was more to Maxim's story, I'm still pleased with this prequel graphic novel series.

3.5 I did enjoy these comics, the art is very beautiful. I also have a very very strong desire for more books in this world and to reread the original series.
