Addictive series of unfortunate events I was considering giving the series 4 stars as I found it challenging to keep returning to the doom and gloom of the constant threat of annihilation. Then I realised that I did want to know what comes next and how it might be achieved. I finished the last book of the series today and realised that I very much enjoyed the experience.

Rousing good tale. I really enjoyed this series. The alien descriptions and their cultures were well written. The battle scenes were slightly overdone at times and some of the dialogue was a little too flowery. The overuse of “screamed” was irritating.

Paul, the 4th member of the band, was a casualty of the war on Bahay, a far distant planet settled by refugees from the Philippines. George and Jon are now on Bahay, fighting for their lives against the Kalayaan - Bahayan guerrilla fighters. The jungle is alive with the sounds of wildlife and bullets. As the survivors of Symphonica struggle to find the killer of their bandmate, the detestable Ernesto Santos, their leader, Sgt. Lizzy Pascal, wants to find him for another reason, for torturing and raping her and cutting off her hand. Jon has fallen for a young Bayahian girl named Maria Imelda de la Cruz, who is fleeing from the cruel, bloodthirsty, jungle fighter and terrorist. The characters drive this story and weave through twists and turns of the storyline. The story is led by the members of Symphonica - in the jungle, the streets and the bars of South Bahay. Jon has taken a 4 day leave spent in the arms of Maria, even marrying her in a mock wedding which he plans to make real and take her back to Earth. Jon, George, some of their platoon mates, Maria and some barber's are celebrating in the Go Go Cowgirl, the seediest bar on the seediest world in the seediest corner of the galaxy. The Go Go Cowgirl. A haunt for drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, and the soldiers they serviced. The party is interrupted by Ernesto as he bursts into the room and shoots Sgt. Lizzy in the chest. Jon fires a lucky shot, the bullet removing a portion of Ernesto's skull and splattering the wall with blood and small pieces of brain matter and bone. That begins this tale of the horrors of battle and the cost of warfare on the soldiers who fight. Easy to return to the real world and put the terror behind you. Just forget about it, get on with your life. Forget about the blood, the gore, the smell of death and excrement, rot and propellants, the decaying jungle and bodies. Yeah, just put it behind you, let it go. Sorry. Anyway, this is an amazing tale of warfare in the future. The characters are believable and endearing. The story is not too farfetched to hold you, engulf you, bring a quiet chuckle in the night, or a gasp of pure terror when it gets too real. These are truly amazing stories from a master storyteller. I highly recommend this great read!

One to read again and again. This boxset has just been amazing. From the first page I was gripped and HAD to keep reading. As the pages are turned you feel yourself being drawn into a world of loss, horror and hope. You smile at the victories and feel sad at the defeats and losses. If your a sci fine fan, an adventure fan, a fan of a good book I have one question for you.........what are you waiting for????

Just too long. There was never a "quiet" time of more than a page or two. Too many narrow escapes from impossible situations. Well written with amazing and disturbing aliens. I got to the point I just wanted to finish it. Just too long. There was never a "quiet" time of more than a page or two. Too many narrow escapes from impossible situations. good story The box set is good to get all these together. It can be a slog tho. There is a good bit of repetition and could’ve probably use some coaching around battle techniques. But overall it’s a good story and I did enjoy it.

wonderful tale of overcoming incredible odds. Really good tales and characters. Unexpected twists, new worlds, new threats, and perseverance. Not often that a book I’m reading brings out real emotional responses but this did several times.

Whelp. Five chapters in and I've already hit the eight deadly words. Except maybe Rowan, some what. Just a tad bit. Whelp. Five chapters in and I've already hit the eight deadly words. Except maybe Rowan, some what. Just a tad bit.
