The Metabarons is Shakespearean, it’s epic, it’s violent, it’s tragic and it’s beautiful. Jodoworsky and Gimenez tell this epic generation spanning tell through 2 robots recounting the history of their master and his lineage. Jodoworsky and Gimenez tell this epic generation spanning tell through 2 robots recounting the history of their master and his lineage. We follow the Metabaron clan and watch as their traditions develop from father to son. The dialogue is very theatrical but I think you can attribute it to the fact that it’s a story being told, we’re watching the events as remembered from Tonto, the Metabaron’s multi-generational robot assistant. All the Metabarons themselves vary in personality, goals, aspirations and tragedy. It’s a real entertaining thing to read seeing how each Metabaron wants to differ from their predecessor. The art is incredible, I’d even say perfect from an aesthetic lens. The painted work from Gimenez is so pretty and detailed, each panel could be hung on your wall as a poster. The lettering of the onomatopoeia is probably my favorite detail about Gimenez’s art. He’ll make each sound effect blend seamlessly into the art making both the effect and the art one conjoined item. Compared to the work at the time, the sound effects seemed separate from the art and the Metabarons does things different. This edition as well compliments the art beautifully, the very oversized artwork is jaw dropping. My main pitfalls of the book are the sheer amount of incest. I also might’ve expected a bit more cerebral mind bending stuff like what I found The Incal, but that’s more of an expectation not met on my part. 8/10

This is space opera on an epic scale, family drama that transgresses all family taboos, and one hell of a mindfuck of a science fiction tale. Jodorowsky is truly a master of every medium he touches.
