Our ten-year-old daughter especially is a huge fan of the Courageous Girls collection from author Jean Fischer and Barbour Publishing. She's been a reluctant reader for years but this collection has been a huge breakthrough for her. Since she was so taken with 100 Extraordinary Stories for Courageous Girls, we purchased The Bible for Courageous Girls for her birthday. She has been pouring over the scriptures and she has been equally excited to dive into these 100 stories of prayer. She has been pouring over the scriptures and she has been equally excited to dive into these 100 stories of prayer. As a parent, I am so encouraged to see her enthusiasm for reading God's Word grow as she learns about women of faith from our history and the headlines. The author has again highlighted women from a wide range of time periods, countries, backgrounds, and professions. Rather than placing these women on a pedestal, their stories are written in an inspirational and relatable manner which encourages the young readers to join the ranks of prayer warriors across the ages. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

This is a great book for girls. We tell our girls everyday that they are brave and kind, we want them to grow up knowing they can be both every day they choose to be. This book gives examples of other people that show that to be true as well. A great gift for any girl! The publisher add this book available through NetGalley. This review is my honest opinion.

This newest Courageous Girls book, 100 Extraordinary Stories of Prayer for Courageous Girls is just as stimulating, with a central focus on prayer life. I would have loved books like this when I was young. The tales are short and inspiring examples of women throughout history that made a difference in the world through their strong prayer life. The diverse women presented in this book range from Bible times to contemporary. Who wouldn’t want to emulate women like Esther, Ruth, and Anna (from the Bible) Mother Teresa (a nun and missionary) Maya Angelo (a poet and civil rights activist) Pandita Ramabai (an Indian social reformer) Shawn Johnson and Elena Meyers Taylor (Olympians) and countless other memorable world-changers? One story that really speaks to me focuses on a former model and fashion blogger, Lauren Scruggs. (I first learned of her on the news in 2011, when she accidentally walked into a plane’s spinning propeller.) She was severely injured, ultimately losing an eye and hand, but she relied heavily on faith and prayer to get her through the trying times. Her tragedy gave her a new purpose, though. She now runs an organization for women who have lost their arms or legs, providing prosthesis with skin-like coverings. She is a wonderful example of how important prayer life is and how God can make wonderful things happen even out of our difficult times. Every story is one page with a Scripture verse at the bottom, and a colorful, full-page illustration on the opposing page. The hardcover is pretty, the pages are sturdy, and it even has an attached ribbon bookmark. This book has a lovely presentation and provides priceless inspiration and encouragement for women of any age! ★★★★★ Author: Jean Fischer Publisher: Shiloh Kidz Series: Courageous Girls Target Age: 8+ Pages: 208 Source: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour and was under no obligation to post a review.

Author Jean Fischer has written an amazing book for young ladies, upper elementary to middle school. Her 100 Extraordinary Stories of Prayer for Courageous Girls is a beautiful hard cover book that has a one page story and one page painting or illustration of women that prayed and how it impacted their lives. Women included in her book are varied from Biblical to modern day. Many of them I knew but some were new to me. I enjoyed this book myself. The writing style was simple but not demeaning. It is a book a good reader of eight could certainly handle. The women are listed alphabetically so this book would be a great source of reference for a school project even if the reader is not allowed to mention prayer. However, it is a wonderful tool for teaching the importance of prayer, trust, and faith. With the inscription or dedication page and attached ribbon bookmark this hardcover book would be a treasured gift for any girl. It would make a nice small group selection for girls aged 8-12. Every church library would benefit from having this. I definitely recommend this book. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from this grandmother and reviewer. I received a copy of this book from the publisher but these are my own thoughts.

This would be such a great encouragement for any young girl, it was for even me, and I’m a grandmother! On one hundred pages there are stories from currently famous women, women who made history, and women featured in the Bible. Two made such an impact and we don’t even know their names, the woman at the well, and the woman with an issue of blood. Each person has their own page telling how faith and prayer changed them with a relating Bible verse at the bottom. Jean Fischer has brought together accounts of 100 women who prayed for God’s guidance in their lives. I appreciated each short narrative. I liked the way they are arranged in alphabetical order according to names, instead of in chronological order. My girl just turned 9 and she really likes to read. I enjoy this kind of books to read together. I´m thankful about 100 stories together so I don´t have to be searching for inspiration. Women are amazing and a story always gives you what to talk about, questions pop up and bonding is great. If your time is limited and you want to inspire your girl with beautiful testimonies this book may be the right fit for you.

Normally, we’d sit down together and read through, but I plan to give it as a Christmas present. Both of my daughters (ages 7 & 4) enjoyed its predecessor 100 Extraordinary Stories for Courageous Girls and I’m pretty sure they’ll enjoy this as well. While reading though 100 Extraordinary Stories of Prayer for Courageous Girls, I noticed some overlapping stories between it and its predecessor. So, I pulled out my daughters’ copy of 100 Extraordinary Stories for Courageous Girls and compared the two. It’s the same format with a story on the left page and an illustration on the right page. While some of the stories are basically the same, the narrative is worded differently and the illustrations are different. Things I liked: The built-in bookmark! The emphasis on prayer. Some entries focus on a woman’s specific prayer that was answered. Others focus on someone who was known for praying, but are more biographical rather than citing a specific request and answer. The diversity. The stories included people from different faiths – Evangelical Christians, Catholics, Quakers, and Puritans. It included several women who stood up to racism and fought for racial equality. It advocated for gender equality and cited examples of female preachers. (Which some readers may disagree with.) Things I did not like: In the original 100 Extraordinary Stories for Courageous Girls, it would give the story and usually ask a question for reflection. However, in 100 Extraordinary Stories of Prayer for Courageous Girls, there was often an imperative at the end of the narrative. I felt like the author took these women and their personal callings and twisted it to create a principle that applied to everybody. Because of that, when I read through this with my girls, I will be sure to examine and discuss those statements with them. The story of the Canaanite woman who cried out to Jesus to heal her daughter. This story has been interpreted in many different ways and I found the message in this book pretty revolting: “Sometimes when you pray, God will ask you to be like the Canaanite woman, to be like a patient dog at a dinner table.” (Pg. 30). This just didn’t sit well with me. If I’m a child of God, then I’m a child of God – not a dog (even if it’s a beloved lap dog). Frankly, I don’t like the message it sends to my daughter and I really wish the author had left this story out.
