Whilst recommended for children ages 8-12 I would caution parents that this book, if used independently by child, is for children who have excellent reading/comprehensive skills. As mentioned by another reviewer the font is small. there are no pictures and a LOT of information is provided on each page. I would even go as far as to say this book is more suitable for teenagers and young adults. The author even says that this book is also for those who are older and have never cooked before. I would even go as far as to say this book is more suitable for teenagers and young adults. The author even says that this book is also for those who are older and have never cooked before. Book is in two sections. Part 1 covers the basic rules, equipment, pantry and refrigerator essentials etc. Part 2 is all about 'Everyday Kitchen Skills' which is further broken down into 5 lessons: Review the Basics * Knife Skills * How to Saute and Pan Fry * Baking Skills * Cooking with Frozen Ingredients Each of the five lessons contains a recipe. There is even a page of Chef Lingo. The main recipes start on Page 44. As stated above there are NO individual photos although an occasional picture is featured. At the beginning of each recipe section the recipes with page numbers are listed. The sections are as follows: Breakfast * Snacks and Small Bites * Soups, Salads and Sandwiches * Main Dishes * Desserts Prep and Cook time, number of servings, tools/equipment needed, ingredients, instructions and other tips if applicable are included with each recipe. NO nutritional values are provided which is fine by me. MOST of the recipes are from scratch but some, for e.g. Broccoli and Cheese Quiche use premade pie crust, pizza dough, stock etc. Some of the recipes call for honey and/or maple syrup so a little healthier. Others call for sugar. I was pleased with the variety of recipes included in this book. There is even one for Garlicky Sauteed Mussels! That alone should tell you that this book is NOT your normal celery sticks and peanut butter boats type of kids cookbook. This is for kids that have a real interest in creating good food for their family. At the end of the book you will find measurement conversion charts. This is followed by a recipe index and then an ingredient index. What this is, is a list to make looking up a specific ingredient contained in a recipe much easier. Say you are looking to cook with carrots. Just head to 'C' and then 'Carrots' and you will find all the recipes containing carrots in one helpful list. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. That has not influenced my review with the thoughts and opinions above being my own. Thanks, Liz

Excellent resource I read this because my daughter takes culinary classes in school, and now my son is showing an interest in cooking. This is a super user-friendly cookbook that breaks it down for kids who want to cook but don't know much about the process (but aren't completely ignorant.) Each recipe has not only a list of ingredients, but a list of tools that will be needed, cooking time, wait time, total time and troubleshooting tips if things go wrong. I'd highly recommend this.
