It's pretty much impossible to review this book without spoiling it completely. But I'll just say there is a panel where Clark is speaking to Deputy Chief Moore and he says, "Off the record." and has this fantastic look on his face and it makes me love him so much. Bendis is doing really great things with Superman right now, and this book is a perfect example of it.

It might be the hour, but I had to read some scenes few times over as I was losing my place and not keeping focused. I'll give that a minor strike against the comic, but even with that I enjoyed a handful of scenes and how they were presented. The twist at the end was not expected even a little bit. There are multiple moments of Clark or Superman being ridonkulously kind and each one triggered little heart melts in me. There are multiple moments of Clark or Superman being ridonkulously kind and each one triggered little heart melts in me. The kind where you go "damn, that guy is so good I should be a better person myself" which is sweet. I think Bendis, if he is trying to capture the essence of what makes Superman so *good*, he's got it down. And to top it off, there's vulnerable moments for the Man of Steel too. That's like, extra-double-hard to pull off. Well done Bendis. I like the little play with our fire chief going to HAWT in her party-dress, to in casuals in the very next panel. You don't often see female characters portrayed in such changing roles. If they're hot, they're always beautiful. If they're not meant for that role, you'll never see them pretty. The creative team's ability to portray these seamlessly adds depth to a new character and I hope she's in the Superman circle for a long time. Even the confrontation of the gang in the tanker didn't go exactly how I expected it. Upset underling confronts the boss and she gets her say in and it serves her point...like, usually the upstart punk learns very quickly to stay in their place. And Gummy owns the scene and gains my respect. I like that these guys aren't holding to the same-old tropes. Such antagonists are often easy to forget or ignore. I don't think I can with Gummy or even the new guy. (Is he Matches Malone? I'm calling it here and now, it could be Batman...) 34.25/50

4.5 The chapter was mostly within the mafia, and the attempt to find the mafia. There was also a party among others Wonder Woman was there. And I really liked the part with the red mist or whatever it was that hit Superman because it was interesting and it's interesting what it is. Then I realized it was someone and I did not say who because it would be a huge spoiler. But you must read it.

A decent issue that were it not for the last page would feel a bit too much like padding for me. Characterization and art are generally as strong as they have been, but there unfortunately just wasn't a lot here that held my interest. Felt a bit phoned in in all honesty.

I’m liking where Bendis is taking this, more Clark Kent driven. The new fire chief is a neat character, I hope she stays important to the story.
