Great information on various creatures like dragons, harpies, trolls, sprites, elementals and other things. It's also got really good stuff on Greek influences, so you get things like the Furies and Scylla and Carybdis, which I'm sure I just spelled wrong. Anyways, good read, well worth looking at if you're at the librar I read most of this book at the library. There are short lists of books that contain the Fantasy subject discussed on each page which is very fun and helpful when looking for something else to read afterwords. I LOVE this book! I read this book when I was extremely young but I remember adoring it. The illustrations were beautiful and it is very informative and lets you're imagination run wild. This brought me so much nostalgia! Only reason it’s not getting 5 stars is for confused Thebes in Greece with Thebes in Egypt when talking about the sphinx and Oedipus (as a Classicist it annoyed me!)

Then I began to appreciate that it's written for kids, and so the layout is larger, the pace slower, the illustrations more kid-ish. And then I got to pondering on how un-child-friendly much of mythology is: incest, unfaithfulness, war, killing.... And I realized that I like this one much better. If I need to brush up on a few details of a certain mythology to better understand a literary referen I read this right after the Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were and didn't like this one so much. Then I began to appreciate that it's written for kids, and so the layout is larger, the pace slower, the illustrations more kid-ish. The illustrations are gorgeous and on opening to the table of contents, you might think this book is a rare find. However, most of the mythical beast’s descriptions are superficial at best and contain no real information for the reader to digest. It also has some historical information and modern references for further reading. The artwork is lovely and there are credits for the art at the end, so that will be helpful, if I'd like to check out more of some of a specific artist's work. Let me start by saying the art in this book is luminous, intense and beautiful. So many diverse topics are covered in this encyclopedia including creatures, locales and more. Allen discusses many aspects of each entry in interesting language. A wonderful reference guide, or just a book to sit and skim through if you are a fantasy lover.

As it is, I'm reading it cover to cover and enjoying the lush illustrations: chinese dragon carvings, egyption scarob amulets, chubby greek muses, and plenty of creepy monsters and enticing sirens and wizards. The rest of the book is demons, vampires and zombies. If you are a Halloween person, this will be good for you. Others, avoid it. This proves: Don't judge THIS book by it's COVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! While I took offense at the inclusion of chapters on Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster in this decidedly "fantasy" volume, I was (and still am) quite excited at the several David Goode sculptures used to illustrate fantastical creatures. In the end though, this was generally speaking a let-down. This is just a short encyclopedia of all things fantasy. This went over a lot off different creatures/myths, but the explanations were only about 2 pages.
