This book arrived in the mail and before I could warn her, my daughter picks it up and says, “You’re reading a book with a kitty on the cover!” Then she peers closer and with a look of horror on her face sighs, “oh, of course, it’s bleeding” and drops it like a hot potato as I laughed. OF COURSE! Sheesh, what kind of monster must she think I am? And how is this child even mine?! Haha. I wasn’t sure what to expect of this book after reading the synopsis but it intrigued me enough to accept a review copy. It’s more dark urban fantasy than it is horror but there are enough horrific and terrifying scenarios and graphic scenes to please the dark heart of most any horror fan too. Matthew is going about his life unaware that life as he knows it is about to end. He’s been having scary dreams and seeing things that may or may not be there. Things that linger in dark corners. Then one not-so-fine day a talking cat enters his life. A talking cat that looks and smells a little like death and claims it is his father! As if that weren’t enough to digest, he’s told he is about to go through the “Mind Wreck” and come into powers that will force him to go on the run from a group who wants to use them for their own nefarious goings-on. Matthew is ill equipped to enter this sinister game but his daddy cat sticks around to help him out and offer advice and sarcasm. I loved the sarcasm coming from a bedraggled cat body so much. “I just really miss having thumbs.” This isn’t my typical kind of read but I enjoyed it. Matthew is a relatable character who just wants to meet up with his dream girl but is caught up in all of this crazy. His cat-dad is a sarcastic smart-ass who is sketchy, a little mean, secretive and always unpredictable. It kept me on my toes guessing what would happen next, it was a little gross and a little funny and it never bored me which is more than I can say for a lot of books! 4 ½ stars I received a copy from the author. Thanks!

Once again Foster has proved to be an excellent horror/comedy writer. Mind Wreck is an action-packed thriller with sci-fi elements and laugh-out-loud funny moments. He doesn't think they are anything special, but he's also having very vivid dreams. During the day he works a cash register at a dead end job. His life is boring and routine until one night a cat shows up outside his window. When he decides to let the cat in he learns that his life is about to become anything but boring. I pretty much knew nothing about this story going in, and I think it's better that way. The reader learns what's happening to Matthew at the same time he does, and it adds to the confusion and tension that foster slowly builds. At the same time there is a part of the story that makes me laugh every time I think about it. One character is hilariously envisioned by Foster, and that character adds laughs to the gore and action that basically starts at the beginning and barely lets up until the end of the book. If I said anymore it would spoil the surprise. This is Foster's third book, and I think it's my favorite of his. He expertly weaves together so many different fictional elements, and I was hooked from the very beginning. Pick this one up. And while you're at it, buy his other two books as well. Foster is an author to watch.

MIND WRECK - SHADOW GAMES is the 3rd novel released by J.Z. Foster since the beginning of the year. Yes you did read that right,,,since the beginning of this year. WITCH HUNTER was released in Jan, THE WICKED ONES (my review of which appears on this blog) was released in Feb and this novel was released in March. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two, but this 3rd outing is the best yet. I have to admit that reading this book made my head hurt. Not in a negative way, but because the authors narrative MIND WRECK - SHADOW GAMES is the 3rd novel released by J.Z. Foster since the beginning of the year. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two, but this 3rd outing is the best yet. I have to admit that reading this book made my head hurt. Not in a negative way, but because the authors narrative is so descriptive that you feel part of the story. Coming across like a mix of Cronenberg's classic Scanners and Gaimen's American Gods (not bad material to be associated with), the story builds and builds into it's own incredible mythos. There are no wasted moments here. Characters are built up and well formed. The pacing is done to a tee, the action never stops or lulls. The ride begins with the first sentence of the Prologue and carries you to the final page. Matthew Reed is just a everyman, suffering from migraines he cant control and dreams he does not understand. Enter his father, whom Matthew thought was dead, and his world suddenly becomes a roller-coaster ride he can never come back from. Since I hate spoilers, that's about as much story info I want to give. Just let me say you will not be disappointed by this story. MIND WRECK - SHADOW GAMES is the opening salvo on what could be an epic series. And J.Z. Foster has set himself up to be a literary force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

One night he lets a stray cat into his apartment and to his shock discovers that the cat is dead and is being controlled by the spirit of his dead father. Matthew has psionic powers and he’s growing more powerful every day in a process called the mind wreck. He’s becoming what’s referred to as a shadow, he has the power to do anything with his mind but on the downside he’s entering a game where everyone is trying to become more powerful and some are trying to kill him. He’s entered the shadow games and life will never be the same. Mind Wreck: Shadow Games by J.Z. Foster is a paranormal suspense novel where anything goes. When I say anything I mean anything, this is an unapologetic horror novel with moments of dark humor thrown in. I think there were 10 times during the reading of this book where I thought to myself: “What the…” This is an idea that I’ve seen done in several novels yet this story comes across as fresh and original. The best part of this book is how the story is told, there is no slow build up into the action, the book starts with a bang and throws you into the deep end of the pool without a life-preserver so to speak. I got the feeling that J.Z. Foster realized that there are several novels out there dealing with people who have psychic powers and he wondered how he can make his story different. The answer was by letting the audience come to their own conclusions on what’s happening as he runs a character who I instantly loved into terrifying situations. In the very beginning you see the character of Matthew as a normal human with a hard life but then he finds out he’s something different. He’s a shadow and shadows are nothing like humans. They live in a different world and this book is about a crazy world that’s exists within our own. If you read that paragraph and thought to yourself that this book sound confusing, you would be right, but if you love the macabre I would urge you to read it. Even though the first part is confusing the author hooks you by giving you a character in Matthew that you immediately relate to and feel sympathy for and he has some truly horrible experiences such as almost being lobotomized by a doctor and being attacked by a demon. It’s not just a story about a down on his luck guy who finds he has powers. There’s also a love story and a story about a father and son all wrapped up in a bloody nightmare. This is a book that you have to be a real hard-core horror fan to enjoy, it’s not for the squeamish. If you can get past the violence though you’ll find a great story with great characters from an author who knows what horror fans want.

He is trying to stay one step ahead of a very strong telekinetic called The Russian. Picture a battle-scarred, human terminator who will not stop. I'm trying hard not to give anything away. I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. The characters were flawed and interesting. Some of them had very flexible morals. The world building was outstanding. I'm hoping J.Z. will be writing a sequel because this has been my favorite of his books. I really want to know what happens next.

I just finished "Mind Wreck: Shadow Games" by JZ Foster and I loved a lot of things about it. The concept and execution of the plot was damn good, I loved the two main characters and their dialogue was hilarious and real (they talked like I talk). The story is about a supernatural race of humans that live among us and have their own constant conflicts, known as Shadow Games. In order to manifest their powers they must endure the Mind Wreck, a sort of rite of passage that is often fatal. Good Shadow Evan Clark is being chased by Bad Shadow The Russian, who is really after Evan's son, Matthew Reed. My only complaint, and it is considerable, was the love interest in the story, I found her scenes VERY disruptive to the flow of the narrative. I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of a trilogy or series as there are possibilities left open at the end. Overall I can confidently recommend this story though, it is worth your time. I rate it a 4/5 and DO recommend it!

This is one of the best books I've reviewed in a while, this easily makes my top ten. It snares you from the first sentence and opens up into its own universe, then takes you on quite a thrill ride from start to finish! Foster has written another remarkable novel with fully fleshed, complex characters. They are flawed and yet likable; even when they are doing horrible things. J.Z’s ability to develop whole personalities and make them real is one of his greatest strengths. Readers are able to connect with these people in a way that many authors can’t achieve. I found Mind Wreck difficult to put down. I tried to pace myself so I didn’t miss things, but it was a challenge. Mind Wreck is full of colorfully graphic and carefully crafted imagery that will demand your attention. This attention to detail allows you to see it as clearly as if you were in the room. Occasionally, that can be a little uncomfortable… especially when it’s particularly detailed. Overall, a great read! Definitely the kind of book that demands a cup of hot cocoa and a warm cozy blanket while snuggling in your favorite chair on a cold and snowy night.

I found this book to be quite an enjoyable ride. It will take you on a journey unlike any other. Not everyone is as they seem. Some are referred to as Shadows and can use their mind in various ways. Only they see the demons lurking in corners waiting to feast on their souls. I found the characters engaging and the plot stimulating and quite thought-provoking. I eagerly await book number two!

This is my third JZ Foster book, and I do believe I’ll forever be a fan! As the book went on it got better and better. Mind Wreck is full of action and suspense, but with some lighter moments thrown in for good measure. Matthew and his father are reunited and try to avoid The Russian, however they end up getting thrown right into the Shadow Games whether Matt is ready or not!

J.Z Foster is an author who doesn't let his foot off the gas pedal. I have previously read his other two books (Witch Hunter and The Wicked Ones) and loved both. This book has a number of strange elements (in a good way!) that all blend together! The story is intriguing, the characters are well constructed and the world it inhabits is thoroughly enjoyable! My only negative - I want to know more about the back story! So hoping there is a future release related to this! J.Z Foster is an author who doesn't let his foot off the gas pedal. A blend of snarky humor and fast paced action with just enough horror to keep you on edge. Here we have the third book by rising horror / urban fantasy author J.Z Foster. This time the horror is dialed back just a bit, but don't take that to mean that horrific things don't happen. This book falls in the middle between the completely serious "The Wicked Ones" and the fun, darkly comic "Witch Hunter". In this case the story itself is dead serious, however the snarky personality of the afore mentioned dead and decaying cat (whose eye ball has a tendency to pop out) adds an element of humor to the otherwise serious story. Additionally the character Dr. Fields is pretty humorous in his own way, so keep an eye out for him. All in all I'd say this is probably the best book by Foster, so far. Evan Clark and Dr.Fields are especially strong characters and the backstory for this book is intriguing and expansive. On a personal level "Witch Hunter"is still my favorite, but this book will probably draw in even more readers with its blending of snarky, smart aleckiness and fast paced action with just enough wince inducing gore to keep you on edge.

J.Z. Foster has restored my love for Urban Fiction! Make no mistake, this is not Urban Fantasy Fiction. This is Urban Horror Fiction, paranormal suspense horror. Before this, Matthew simply lived a normal everyday life of working, going home, trying to sleep and repeat, but not only does he find a Dead cat talking to him but the Dead thing states he is Matthew's father and needs to prepare him for the so-called Shadow Games. Matthew finds out that he is a psionist and needs to be able to defend himself from what other psionists call the Russian. Will Matthew learn to adapt to his powers or will the Russian destroy everything Matthew has ever known? Great, hopefully, 1st book in a series that I would love to visit many times over.

Foster Does It Again!!! Oh my gods... What can I say, Foster has managed to effortlessly pull me into his world of the paranormal, and left me struggling to climb back out - I didn't want to leave! His characters, every single one of them, are fascinating and fit in extremely well with the storyline. Foster doesn't waste time on boring descriptive paragraphs, but instead delivers each and every chapter with such velocity that you can't help but read just one more chapter, only to realize you've ac Foster Does It Again!!! Mind Wreck is CRAZY GOOD! I highly recommend this, and any other works written by J.Z. Foster. He has officially been added to my short list of FAVORITE authors!

This is a great blending of what I would consider horror and science fiction. Skillfully written and fantastically entertaining, I believe this would make a great movie! The mix of action, gritty horror and amazing story telling made this a true joy to read and I didn’t want it to end. I’m a huge fan of Mr. Foster now and am anxiously awaiting his next release!

A great read, if a little within the guide-rails. Was expecting something a little more out-there, or a few more surprises. Character development was a little thin, as was the back-story on the groups at war (and their reasons). Definitely worth a read for fans of the genre though.

I feel like this is set in the same world as the Witch Hunter books and I love that. I enjoyed the secret war that is going on and we, as normal humans, are unaware. I did feel that there was a lot of set up to expand this world into a series and then dropped for other projects. Which I understand but it still saddens me as there is potential for some really good follow ups to this.
