Review of THE SPIRIT BOX by Lee Isserow (THE FREELANCERS #1) Immediately I was totally engrossed in this story, and am eagerly anticipating the next in this new series. Author Lee Isserow has quite the imagination, and here he successfully balances magic and mundaneity, weaving them together in such a way that opening a door to another country seems natural, as does demolecularizing oneself to pass through walls and fences. I readily suspended any disbelief and threw myself into the story line. I readily suspended any disbelief and threw myself into the story line. Magickian Rafe Carter, the scion of a line of strong magickians, is himself—not quite. He's feckless, determined, knowledgeable—but life just keeps throwing him wrenches in the works, tripping him up, no matter how determined and dedicated is he. The twists are sharp and unexpected, the characters are truly delightful. This story is definitely a winner in my estimation.

I'm awestruck and greatly impressed with the level of skill shown by this creator of tales. This was the very first book I've read from this author but it will most definitely not be the last! And the story oh my! I could not put down the book. It is Outstanding, and definitly one of the best books I've read in quite a while! What makes it so outstanding.. I strongly suggest you read it and find out, you wont be sorry. 😬 Note: Looking for love or romance books, well keep looking this is not a well for that..BUT If you love books in the style of H.P. Lovecraft or other stories with paranormal suspence, or just prefer well created books in the Paranormal/ fantasy genre, you most definitely hit gold in this one!

Rafe is a petty thief and 'glamour' - a low-level Magickan - who can be hired by senior paranormals who need his skills of 'amnesia-induction' and illusion manufacturing. When this unlikely couple have a close encounter in the course of one of Rafe's commissions, following the gruesome death of her (supposed) grandmother and the awful events that ensue, there is a definite spark between them that is more than just Rafe's futile attempts to work his 'glamour' on Ana. What is the secret of the eponymous Spirit Box? What was contained within that has now been released? How did the Box come into Ana's possession? Who is Crawford and what secret is he hiding from Rafe? How does Ana discover the truth about her grandmother - and her grandfather? Who is a Mundane in Ana's family? How does her grandfather regard this person and what is she to Ana? Why does the Magickan who's 'ordered' the Box want it so badly? What magick powers does Ana seemingly possess - and who is the father who gave them to her? With more than a passing nod to Harry Potter and the original Alien film, events unfold in a most unlikely and enthralling way - sometimes slowly and at others at breakneck speed, which will take your breath away! A definite best-seller from the talented Lee Isserow - and one not to be missed!

The Spirit Box Something to put sparkle in your life… This is the first full length novel in The Freelancers series (there is a short story prequel), and a fine beginning it is. Rafe, the detective, is short on magic and slightly accident prone. Ana, next in line to be murdered, is a feisty woman; able to take the unexpected in her stride, and will not go down easily. The pace of the story is good, with plenty of action. The character building works well as Rafe and Ana get to know one another. I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a good get away from real life. With a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, and a bit of magic, the hour sped by and soon I found I was finished, and hungry for the next in the series. This one gets 5 stars from me.

Rafe and Ana characters are great and well developed. And plot of the story was good. Pace was little slow to fully get lost in the story about over half the book then it pulls up in maybe due to all detail's and background of both characters then finally pulling them together work as a team. But that happens with book 1 to new series starting with lot of myths and mystery's going on and us reading to learn what is going on not have to wait to learn with each book for piece of the puzzle. I received a free copy of this book (thanks!) so here are some of my thoughts: It's well written and original, with some very interesting characters and overall concept. There are some elements of suspense, romance, humour and adventure. The pace initially took me a little while to "find" but once it did, I couldn't put it down.
