Dayum my weakness for yummy bad ass military men, this book, OMG, so many yummy sexy soldiers I was in heaven! I got the ARC of the second book in this series Resurrection River so OCD had me buying this book. That way I could read them in order since this book's hero and the next book's hero are brothers. This is the first time I have read a book from Lindsay Cross and I really enjoyed it. I also just want to say that the covers for this series are smokin' hot. "You are an idiot, Hunter James. I never wanted him. I wanted you. But you left." What this book is about Hunter James is back in his hometown on an under cover mission. A mission he doesn't want. He has to get close to his ex to see if she is involved in running guns to a terrorist group. He doesn't want to get close again to the only woman he has ever loved, the woman who broke his heart when he saw her kissing another man. Will Hunter be able to put his past hurt aside to do his mission? Or will he find out that things aren't always what they seem? "It's been raining a shit-ton since I've been back." Jesus Christ, he might as well be talking to the grocery store clerk. Evie burst out laughing. "What's so funny?" "Nothing. Just, you know. The weather?" "Would you rather me talk about how bad I want to fuck you right now?" Hunter: I loved Hunter! He was all kinds of yummy goodness. Kick ass super solider, protective, and a little playful. He had major home issues when he lived with his real parents, before he was adopted and those issues color his judgement. He jumps the gun and thinks Evie cheated on him and leaves for years without saying a word to her. Hunter felt very realistic to me. He wasn't a perfect hero he made some mistakes, but he has a good heart. "I've been thinking about you for a long time. Holding you. Touching you like this. I don't know how much longer I can keep myself in check." Evie: Evie bless her heart, has had it rough the last 5 or so years. The love of her life just leaves and doesn't tell her why. Then when she finally decides to move on with her life she gets into an relationship with a abuse jerk that almost kills her. And now he is trying to use her to run what he told her was drugs but really it's gun to Mexico and launder money. Evie has lived though hell but she is still fighting to piece her life back together. She is a survivor. Evie is very sweet, and loving, and she tries to be brave even when she is scared to death. My heart hurt for Evie. She was very endearing. "Who the hell are you to interrogate me? It's none of your business who sends me texts." Evie managed to pull of the affronted act even though she was quaking like a terrified little girl inside. "I'm the guy who saved your life. And it's looking like this won't be the only time I'll need to step in." Hunter turned her around, his hands heavy on her shoulders. Evie yanked free of his grip. "Aren't you forgetting one teeny tiny fact? You left me. And you show up expecting me to just bow down before you?" "You little wild cat. I'm going to tan your ass for that." Hunter and Evie together are super hot. They have a past and I wish I could have seen a little more of it. Evie is very forgiving because if Hunter would have just asked her about things, it would have saved them both a ton of hurt. I really liked the secondary characters especially Jared, and Ranger. Redemption River is a non stop thrill ride. The only reason it's a 4 star and not a 5 is because there was a few times at the start of the book that I was a little confused and even though the book is like 300 or more pages their relationship felt rushed. Loved the HEA, and I can't wait to start Ranger and Amy's story. Below I leave a couple of my favorite quotes: "I know you can't keep your hands off me, but we gotta get out of here," Hunters said. Evie punched his arm and he couldn't hold back a grin. "You kissed me," She said. "Your come-fuck-me look was calling my name sweetheart." "You....you..." "Angel?" Hunter supplied, enjoying the angry flush spreading across her cheeks. "Devil." "Nice song. I didn't know you listened to JT." "I've found I have a taste for songs about revenge." "Really? Or just boy bands?" http://jessicasoverthetopbookobsessio...

Adding in the element of a raging Mississippi River added a great sense of urgency and momentum to the story. I was on the edge of my seat at times. Unfortunately, the romance aspect, while hot, fell a little bit flat for me. The story setup was there, but the chemistry between the MC's felt off. Due to some inconsistency issues, I couldn't quite grasp their history. And the heroine was a little too wishy-washy for my tastes. Her back and forth personality left me scratching my head at times. I couldn't quite figure out who she was. The villain and some of his antics in this book were a little over the top for me, but I could see what the author was going for. Unfortunately, sometimes less is more. However, the backstory between secondary characters Ranger and Amy has me salivating for their book. I sense a complete angst-fest there! I definitely plan on continuing on with this series! ***ARC courtesy of author, in exchange for an honest review***

Audio - 5 stars Story - 2 stars It's one misunderstanding after another for pretty much the entire book. Then there's a quick apology and a wedding. Yeah, not my kind of romance. As far as this series is concerned, I'm one and done with it.

I have to admit that I struggled a bit with the info dump (being a first book in a series and all) and it took me a while to get used to the author's writing style (lots of descriptive phrases like "...tasted as bitter as a hot Afghani beer" and "...voice rolled with enough menace to make Ted Bundy cringe". But once this book got rolling, I had a hard time putting it down. Hunter James... There's plenty of small southern town 'atmosphere' in dirty little Mercy, Mississippi. The occupants all s I have to admit that I struggled a bit with the info dump (being a first book in a series and all) and it took me a while to get used to the author's writing style (lots of descriptive phrases like "...tasted as bitter as a hot Afghani beer" and "...voice rolled with enough menace to make Ted Bundy cringe". But once this book got rolling, I had a hard time putting it down. Hunter James... There's plenty of small southern town 'atmosphere' in dirty little Mercy, Mississippi. The occupants all seem to be up to no good. The mayor's corrupt (running arms to terrorists), as is the sheriff (he's in on it), and even our heroine Evie and her extended family are skirting the wrong side of the law (possible money laundering through the family bar). The dirty mayor, Marcus Carvant, happens to be Evie's abusive ex. She wants nothing more to do with him but he does seem to have a hold over her. Evangeline "Evie" Videl... Evie's crazy grandfather, C.W... So Evie's true love, the one who took off when he thought she betrayed their love, is Hunter James. Hunter is part of a super secret group of nine elite commandos called Task Force Scorpion. TF-S takes on the riskiest, dirtiest jobs that the military has to offer. As the story begins Hunter and his men are trying to flush out a terrorist in Pakistan. The op goes bad and Hunter is injured and one of his men is left behind. Hunter is feeling all kinds of guilt but he has a new mission that leads him back to his hometown of Mercy. He has intel that says Evie and her family somehow may be connected to this terrorist. Can he get Evie to trust him enough to reveal what she's involved in? Can he seduce the truth out of her? Or will seeing her again and finally talking about her 'betrayal' open his eyes to feelings that have never died? This part had me biting my nails... Like I said, once I got past the opening chapters where a lot of info and numerous characters were introduced, things got a lot better. Just stick with it if you get confused. Once the focus was on Evie and Hunter, and their backstory and future, things really heated up. And as a bonus there were quite a few steamy love scenes to go with the suspense. Add a little surprise twist at the super-suspenseful ending...and things are not entirely over in corrupt Mercy, Mississippi. That's where Hunter's brother Ranger comes in with his own book (Resurrection River). I already like what I've seen of Ranger so I'm looking forward to his story. Nice beginning to what could become a long series. 4 stars *ARC received from the author for an honest review

My heart broke for Evie for what she went through and what happened to her when Marcus got a hold of her again. Wonderfully well written story, and the characters were great. Look forward to reading the next book in the series (I hope it's Ranger and Amy's story).

Miscommunication/misunderstandings need to be believable, sadly this wasn't the case here. Also, they're on the run in the middle of a swamp, and a flood, with alligators and snakes and baddies chasing them (that doesn't include the mosquitoes that should have carried them away lol) and yet they have time to have sex (after been separated due to his crass stupidity and ignorance for FIVE YEARS) whilst all this is going on. Eye-rolling and too silly to be believed.

There were things I did like about this story, thus the 3.5 stars. I liked the that the hero actually was human enough to not be a complete douche. Yes, he originally thought he could keep his feelings locked up tight, use her, and move on but that didn't happen. For that, I applaud the author for not trying to write a complete douche. I liked his sense of duty, his sense of right and wrong, and his sense of loyalty. I found the heroine to be decent, as well. She was a fighter, even when the odds were stacked against her. She did what she thought she had to do in order to protect those she cared about. She didn't want to be used and thrown away and that only further launched her into danger. I wasn't completely in love or sold on this story but it wasn't a terrible read. I may give Lindsay Cross another read in the future to see if maybe just this story was rushed and a one off.

But this story was hard-hitting and full of action that you wouldn't date to stop. Hunter James is the man of the hour and his ladylove Evie might as well be the queen he couldn't say no to. They're both likeable characters and the story promises even more! Oh, and don't get me started with the sexy erotic scenes. Oh my. I can't help but blush! This is my first Lindsay Cross book and will definitely not be the last. I can't wait to meet the other Men of Mercy soon!

The first book in the Men of Mercy series by Lindsay Cross. Hunter James is sent home to Mercy, Mississippi to investigate possible illegal arms dealings. Part of the plan is to get close to his ex, Evangeline Videl aka Evie. It seems she may be involved with the running of guns. But Evie is just trying to get over the pain of her 2 relationships. I received an ARC for my honest opinion. I knew immediately after reading the blurb that it was right up my alley. It had all my must haves and then some. Evie is trying to keep things from totally sinking with her bar and being intimidated by her psycho ex fiancé and his stooges. So many are depending on her when Hunter walks back into her life. She has her own side to the scene Hunter witnessed. I love second chance books and along with this one is one of the evilest villains I have read yet today. I would say equal to Catherine Anderson villains. She does a great job at setting the scenes that show you how vile they are, and while she has given us a complete story for the couple, the end leaves you with the knowledge that it is not over yet. You still will not be obligated to continue at books end but I think most will want to. There are some pretty steamy love scenes that paint a graphic image and will not disappoint if you enjoy your books HOT-TA-TA!!! It is well written with a believable plot. While I don't like angst it did kill me that Hunter kept his secret from her and made a dark shadow on there wondrous relationship and you knew what was going to happen it was just a matter of when or where. You could feel Evie's world crashing down around her and I wish she would have made Hunter work harder to earn her trust back. Even so, I definitely felt he deserved her forgiveness it just could have been fun for Evie to keep him on his knees a bit longer. LOL! Enjoy!

The idea of this book was better than the actual book. I felt let down by the MC's. Misunderstanding/miscommunication that they held onto for so long just magically disappeared with a let's get married. I wanted the characters to discuss more so that my questions about the pair could be answered. Stick figure characters in terms of development.

Both Hunter and his brother Ranger wish they had died instead of the one who did (sorry, no spoilers here.) Really? This book had both kinds of stories. And, of course, Evie just had to have her TSTL moment. She jumped to conclusions, just like Hunter did, and she took off to meet Marcus, ALONE. And she was scared to death of him. At 80% she still hadn’t really gotten any backbone and was always trembling from fear of something. I did like Hunter’s team but the narration was so bad I don’t think I want to listen to the next book in this series, although I really did like Ranger and he’s the next book, but… Even though this was kind of an alright storyline, it was set in Mississippi and the narrator made everyone sound like ignorant hillbillies. And the MRG (Mississippi Revolutionary Group) didn’t make any sense to me. They voted on whether or not to (supposedly) run drugs for Marcus, while Evie was dead-set against it the others argued about the one hundred thousand dollars it would bring. Also, Evie’s grandfather was kind of crazy and her mother was sleeping with.. (no spoilers again.) Marcus was just crazy in his thinking and I couldn’t wait for Hunter to kill the sheriff, and hopefully Marcus, too. There was some explicit sex but once Hunter mentioned he was going to spank Evie I was turned off and couldn’t wait for this book to end, all the while hoping he wouldn’t actually spank her before the story was over. I like explicit sex in my books but once spanking or bondage is mentioned I’m just about done. (Oh, and BTW he didn’t spank her. I don’t even know why it was mentioned.) There’s swearing and the F-bomb is used 58 times. 2 reviewers said this was a CLIFFHANGER and 1 said it wasn’t. Well, it wasn’t a cliffhanger. It certainly left it open for the next book, left some unanswered questions but Hunter and Evie got their HEA, and isn’t that what matters? As to the narrator: I like Aiden Snow BUT when a group of men are laying in the sand, their bodies half in the water and half out, getting ready to capture a terrorist, and they’re talking in their coms, the chances of them nearly yelling at each other is slim to none. And I do mean yelling at each other. There are times when you’d be whispering at each other and that’s most definitely one of those times. That particular part of the book was soooo stupid I couldn’t believe it! There's nothing worse than a narrator whose yelling when he shouldn’t be. And when you’re in enemy territory and sitting in their bar discussing your plans to take them down you wouldn’t be yelling at each other then either. I’m sorry to say that Aiden Snow completely ruined this book and since he’s narrating the next one I won’t be moving forward with this series. Oh, and the female voices sucked. Each male had their own specific voice but the females were just too manly.

This plot had everything – from action, to romance, to angst, to lastly enough backstory to make sure that you didn’t miss anything. And while the story may have been about Hunter and Evie, it also has an array of secondary characters that are not only given their due but are fully essential for the story. The only issue? It barely took Evie and Hunter like 2-3 pages to get through their issues and it isn’t exactly something that I appreciated. The fact that they had big trust issues and it was so easily resolved did not sit right with me, but hey, it could be just me! I do like my dramas :P I am though, really excited to read the next book in the series, because the author has whetted my appetite and the fact that I absolutely love a series of standalone yet interconnected characters also is fuelling my interest. ;) For more reviews don't forget to visit For The Love of Fictional Worlds

3.5 Stars As a first book in the series there was definitely a ton of info that was provided in the first couple chapters, but I also felt that I was missing out on some stuff. I had to check and make sure that this wasn't a spin-off series at one point cause I was lost a few times. I can see where this series could really take off if things weren't so over the top. I liked this book enough to recommend it to friends, so we'll see what happens in future books. There were a couple things that were left hanging that I would've liked tied up, but then what would the second book be about? One thing that seriously bothered me was (view spoiler)[ when they escape out of her house and start walking down the gravel road, see an alligator that they scare off with a rock and somehow decided that that would be the absolute best place to stop and have sex. My first thought...get somewhere safe and make a camp where the river isn't six feet from my face, alligator free, and not on gravel. (hide spoiler)] Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

This is a great romantic suspense read. Being the first in a new series there is a lot of information to absorb but the author keeps the story moving along at a fairly good pace. This is a very good debut novel and I'll be interested in seeing what comes next in the series.

A high 3.5 stars with lots of potential. As a first book for this series, I do understand that Ms Cross tries to introduce to the readers to as many characters as she can. Unfortunately this came across at times as information overload for me. The resolution was a little too rush and quick. Having said that I will still recommend this series as it has potential plus I did enjoy Ms Cross style of writing. ** ARC received via NetGalley **

This is book one in the Men of Mercy Series and what a great start to the series it is. Hunter left his hometown after thinking that his girlfriend Evie cheated on him. This left an impact on both of them. Now he's back and the past catches up on them. Have I mentioned Hunters a hot military guy? Oh yes :) I really liked these two and thought the secondary characters added so much to the story. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

Second chances are one of my favorite tropes. Hunter and Evie must first go through some trials before they get their shot. Lots of emotion and good development. Good plot. Enjoyed this read! **ARC received in exchange for an honest review**

Almost as good an author as Cindy Gerard and Pamela Clare. Glad to have found her & her Men of Mercy. Almost as good an author as Cindy Gerard and Pamela Clare. Glad to have found her & her Men of Mercy.

Then parading different women into Evie's place of work every time he was on leave was just mean. He then comes back to USE Evie believing she is running guns. Just couldn't like Hunter with his continual lying to Evie's face and others. Yes he is sorry at the end but too little too late for me. Due to his behaviour Evie spirals downward emotionally then gets engaged to the foulest of men. He tortures, beats and brands her. Though Evie is now no longer engaged to Marcus. I found Evie see-sawed from being this strong capable woman I liked, to a dithering idiot. Then Evie does the usual idiot trick of having sex with him, but hey she still loves him so that is okay. There was not real acknowledgment that he even knew the torture Evie had suffered. I just couldn't get my head around this story at all. The double and triple crosses, then we get nasty sheriff Brown still alive at the end so he can be the baddie in the next book. I have more pleasurable books to read.

I liked the storyline but just too fast paced and a little bit too cheesy for me! Still finished it,
