Her unique specialties are restoring historic places around the San Francisco area, communicating with ghosts, and solving murder mysteries that frequently pop up on her construction sites. I greatly enjoyed Mel’s latest project, the restoration of a lighthouse and its keeper’s house in San Francisco Bay. The rich history and romance of lighthouses are fascinating, though tragedy and grief are parts of their past too, as Mel quickly discovers. There are really two mysteries in this book to solve. The first involves the death of Mel’s friend Alicia’s ex-husband, an abusive jerk who shows up on the island unexpectedly and takes a fatal tumble down the lighthouse stairs. The second (and my favorite mystery) is about the mournful ghost who haunts the tower. Hers is a heart-wrenching story, and I easily got into the research Mel had to do to get all the pieces to fit. A GHOSTLY LIGHT is an enjoyable cozy with likable characters, and the paranormal element makes it even more intriguing. I’ve read one previous book in this series, so I knew some of the backstory, but I think you’d be fine jumping in here. Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I have read one or two in this series and while I enjoyed them, this one stood out most for me as it hit on something I love so dearly which is preservation of lighthouses. This story was so inspiring, the mystery so captivating and the characters both alive and dead so relatable! This is a book I would buy for my friends just so we could talk about the story together! This series is a book clubs delight, this story a crown jewel. This book is out June 27th.

Mel Turner is a general contractor who restores and renovates historic houses and buildings in the Oakland/San Francisco area. She has taken over the business from her father. In this 7th book, her business has been hired to restore a lighthouse and the lightkeeper's house. The house will be an inn. The lighthouse is close to San Quentin. Mel's friend who hired her for the job is a main suspect. There are several ghosts on the island. I pre-ordered this book as I like the series very much. When thinking about why I like it above some other cozy mysteries, there are several reasons. First is the character of Mel Turner. She is nontraditional and humorous. I really like the family scenes when Mel, Caleb (her stepson) , Mel's boyfriend, Stan (a family friend) and Doug/Dog gather for a meal in Mel's dad kitchen. Mel's dad can really cook up a storm. There is always room for anyone else who drops in. Many do drop in and they are always welcome. It has a very cozy family feel to it. I did not have the mystery solved as to who the murderer was and other questions about what happened to a five year old boy from the past until the author disclosed it. The book is a light paranormal. I think all series are best when read in order but I think you could jump in with this book and not feel lost. The author does a good job of updating the readers. I am looking forward to the next book.

A Ghostly Light is the seventh book in the A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series. Alicia has contracted with Mel Turner to renovate a lighthouse and convert the keeper’s house into a B&B. Mel is surprised when she sees Alicia coming her way with a burly bodyguard and soon learns that Alicia’s ex-husband, Thorn who has been abusive in the past, has learned where she is. Mel is surprised when she sees Alicia coming her way with a burly bodyguard and soon learns that Alicia’s ex-husband, Thorn who has been abusive in the past, has learned where she is. A little later Mel heads to the lighthouse to see if she can overcome her fear of heights. As she starts up the circular stairway, she meets the dead body tumbling down the staircase. A short time later Alicia walks down the same stairway. Based on the past history of Alicia and Thorn, she becomes the prime suspect. Mel feels that Alicia is innocent and sets off to find the killer. There are three boaters on the island protesting the privatization of the island. Also, a new member of her crew, Waquisha, appears to be hiding something and Mel needs to find out if she might have known Thorn at some time. When Mel goes to the historical society to see if there is any record of a female falling/jumping from the walkway, she finds that the material dealing with the lighthouse has gone missing. In addition, Mel and others have been finding what are thought to be “treasure maps”. They appear to be real but has someone gone to a lot of effort to slow up construction. Mel is able to call on a cast of enjoyable and believable character, including her new love interest, Landon. Paranormal mysteries aren’t really my thing, but Blackwell blends just enough into the story, to make it that much more enjoyable. I will be watching for the next book in this exciting series.

This was the first book of this series that I read, and at first it was a little slow, mostly due to the fact that I'm not into home improvement. However, I liked the setting, a lighthouse island off San Francisco, and the story was very good. Although I had guessed one of the mysteries, the killer and motive took me by surprise. If I have to read another home improvement book for a challenge, I'll pick up one of these. I enjoyed the happy twists in this book and found myself sympathizing with a lot of characters. Blackwell has done a great job of keeping things fresh despite this being the 7th book in the series. My only quibble is that I wish we could have had more time with Landon to get to know him before we were presented with this life-changing situation between him and Mel. I like him a lot more than Graham (who I didn't think needed to be around for as long as he was), but I still don't feel like I know I enjoyed the happy twists in this book and found myself sympathizing with a lot of characters. Now, if Mel wants to clear her friend’s name, she’ll need the help of the lighthouse’s resident ghosts to shine a light on the real culprit. Review: A Ghostly Light, the seventh book In the Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series, is the best book to date. A somewhat isolated lighthouse setting, buried treasure, a touch of romance, ghosts, and a murder all mesh to make a wonderful supernatural adventure. When Mel’s friend Alicia hires Turner Construction to refurbish a lighthouse, the keeper’s dwelling, and the outbuildings, Mel thinks she is up for the challenge. Alicia, who has done her best to put her abusive past behind her, is shocked when her ex-husband Thorn tracks her down on the island. Thorn quickly meets an untimely end, and all signs point to Alicia’s guilt. Mel is certain her friend is innocent, but proving it might be more difficult than one would think. In addition to Thorn’s murder, there is an active ghost occupying the lighthouse and causing some difficulties for the construction crew. The historical mystery surrounding the lighthouse ghost, former keeper Ida Vigilance, is heartbreaking in origin. The parts of the book focusing on her are my favorite. The turn of the century time period, an old copy of the book Treasure Island, the maps leading to buried treasure, and the photo found in the attic all add dimension to the tale, and I love it. The present day mystery is not as strong but still has plenty of twists and turns and is quite enjoyable, too. The perpetrator came as a bit of a surprise, and the mystery resolution left me a touch sad. However, the ending of this book is quite pleasing, and I look forward to seeing where it will lead. Mel is a woman in a man’s world. As the owner of Turner Construction she has mostly male employees, and she is completely outnumbered at home with her dad, business manager, step-son, boyfriend, and down-on-his-luck friend all under the same roof. Even the dog is a boy. None of this seems to faze her, although she longs for some privacy, and she is a strong, relatable protagonist. I like that despite her confidence, she still has challenges, most recently a debilitating fear of heights that makes her lighthouse construction site a trial. She also struggles with feeling a bit inadequate around her boyfriend Landon and fearful of her changing relationship with her step-son Caleb. See…very relatable. She handles her ability to see ghosts with grace and empathy, and I come away from this series always feeling that ghosts are plausible. Mel’s home life is raucous and full of life. Her family and friends are colorful, each unique, and on the surface one could question their ability to all get along. But they do. I particularly like Mel’s father. He comes across as a man full of wisdom and unconditional love with a heavy dose of humor thrown in. San Francisco, the lighthouse island in particular, is a great backdrop for the story. There is just something about lighthouses that is fascinating; they are beautiful but forlorn yet hopeful. Since the action mostly takes place on the island, I do miss the typical house renovation setting which Blackwell writes so well. It is obvious that she is knowledgeable and cares about preserving these monuments of a bygone era. A Ghostly Light is truly a delightful read. I recommend it to fans of the series, those who like a ghost or two in their mysteries, and readers looking for well developed characters and a San Francisco setting. *OBS would like to thank the publisher for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*

Alicia wants to transform the island property into a paying Inn, saving the history of the lighthouse and its former residents. No one thought that murder would get in the way. Alicia’s abusive ex-husband, Thorn shows up and is promptly killed, leaving Alicia as the only suspect. Of course, there are a few other problems with the renovation of the lighthouse beside the police investigation into Thorn’s death. First, the project is a colossal undertaking that will take time and lots of money. Second, Mel has recently become terrified of heights and is doing her best to hide the fact from her clients and crew which makes her job almost impossible and her life a nightmare. Last but most definitely not the least, some of the former residents are still living on the island and in the lighthouse, which wouldn’t be an issue if they were alive. Mel has little choice if she wants to finish this project, she has to find out who killed Alicia’s ex, and help the ghost in the attic find peace. If she fails the project will be ruined, and her friend will end up in prison for a murder she didn’t commit. -- Mel Turner is a memorable character filled with ambition and determination but has a softer side as well, one where she is fearful of failing in her relationship with boyfriend Landon and losing the love of her step-son Caleb. Her friends are colorful and loyal as well as entertaining all on their own, especially her ghost hunter mentor, Olivier. The characters are highly relatable; the reader can easily see their family and friends within the pages of this book. Juliet Blackwell is a talented story teller who again shows that she can create interesting and well-rounded characters as well as exciting plot lines. The location of San Francisco Bay is wonderfully detailed in a way that makes it easy to see and feel the city and the lighthouse even if the reader has never been to the city. The small island where the lighthouse is located will come to life as the reader imagines the keepers and their families living and working on the lonely island in a time long past. This book is a delightful fast read with several twists and turns that will keep the reader not only turning the page but surprised by the outcome. The reveal of the killer is very emotional and may even bring a tear to the eye of many readers. Happily, this book is recommended to anyone who enjoys a good mystery that is plot driven with characters that are charming and memorable. I received an ARC of this book.

(Goodreads) Review: The characters are well developed and well rounded. Mel is a strong smart woman who does not let much stop her. Except for heights, that she cannot handle. This is a new fear for her, and she does not know how to handle it. This is not a good thing for someone in construction. I thought this one just one of the ways that the author makes Mel more believable and human. All of her family (her dad, Caleb, Stan…)are very likable and I enjoy reading about all of their interactions and conversations. And of course I cannot forget to mention Thorn, the newly deceased ghost. To bad he does not know how he met his demise. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. The mystery surrounding the lighthouse, and the history of this lighthouse, and lighthouses in general, made for some interesting reading. The mystery was carried on well throughout the entire book. There were enough suspects to consider and enough clues to sift through and this was not an easy mystery to solve. Throw in some red herrings and you have a well plotted mystery on your hands. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy paranormal. With great characters, great descriptions and a top notch mystery to solve, this is a book you are sure to enjoy. I can most definitely recommend this book, this series and this author.

I particularly like Mel's dad and Dog. I received a copy of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

Mel Turner and her friends are back in book 7 of the Haunted Home Renovation Mysteries. Mel and Turner Construction are going to restore a lighthouse, but when a man is killed, and Mel's friend Alicia is blamed she uses her ghost hunting detective skills to get to the bottom of the mystery. I love this series and love how Mel is still growing as a character. I love lighthouses and ghost stories--the fact that this book had both is perfect.

Susan needs more books, not really

I enjoyed this story much more than the last one in the series. The lighthouse setting was unique and the story line interesting with characters that had some substance to them. We still did not get a ton of renovation stuff as in earlier books but since the mystery was so good it didn't matter. I enjoyed this story much more than the last one in the series. Still love Mel and her crazy family. The audiobook narrator for this series is a fantastic choice.

I may have liked this one the best of all! I've a real fondness for lighthouses, and they lend themselves so well to haunting, don't they? SIGH...I suspect this MAY be the last of this series, but IF it is, Ms. Blackwell left Mel and her fans in a very good place...that said, MORE, PLEASE! I may have liked this one the best of all! Cozy mysteries are my “clear my head” reads. Love ‘em. When I’m between books or can’t figure out what to read next they are a great break. And there was a lighthouse.
