Sometimes these are for the better, sometimes for the worst. This particular book shows how two couples take every curve ball life throws at them and make new lives for themselves. For Lucy, the opportunity arises after the death of her grandmother. Armed with a beloved painting and a letter, she finds herself on the road to discovering what her grandmother knew all along: there was still a chance for love left for her. While Lucy is rediscovering herself, you get the opportunity to learn of her grandmother’s past in Italy during World War II. It’s a tragic love story that winds up helping her granddaughter find the happiness she deserves in the long road. I feel it is Belladonna’s story that truly adds that magic touch to this story. I’ve always been a fan of stories from that era and I found it intriguing to see the world change for her in light of Italy’s stance in the war changes. Surprisingly, I also found myself drawn to the love story of it, not only that of a man and a woman, but also that of a grandmother and granddaughter who were very similar. After all, it’s her grandmother’s dying wish for her granddaughter to finally give in to her own feelings and be happy, instead of constantly hiding behind her fear. In regards to Lucy, I couldn’t help but feel a bit of kinship with the character. Though I’m a decade younger, I find myself wondering where to go from here, much like she does at the beginning of the book. It’s this ability to connect with her as well as her grandmother’s story, that helps me enjoy her journey so much. I have to admit I am impressed by how well the author handled the two story lines. Both work well together and yet, either could have worked well on its own. They left me with a wide range of emotions from sadness of the lost love between Belladonna and Paolo to happiness for Lucy finally discovering herself and allowing herself to love Jack (even though, in truth, she had loved him all along). I can’t imagine it’s easy to right a historical fiction, especially for one based in World War II. But I think Courtney Hunt did a great job of keeping the realism to Belladonna’s experiences, while being able to propel the love story. This is the kind of book that can really be enjoyed by a wide range of readers. But I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a sucker for a good love story or for someone who enjoys the kinds of books in which you see the characters grow and find themselves. After all, one of the things most of us want to achieve is the ability to find our place in this world as well as our own little piece of happiness. Reviewer’s note: I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finished reading it in a day! Such a wonderful, multidimensional love story weaving past and present. Excellent theme on this one. There is so much in the past we can learn from, even if it takes us a while to fully understand it. It's never too late to get what we want, or to grow into who we were truly meant to be. Highly recommended to anyone who has been touched by love, or felt it's sting. Finished reading it in a day! Such a wonderful, multidimensional love story weaving past and present. A sweet story about lost love. For some, it's too late to rekindle that passion, but for others, there's still a chance. Lovely descriptions throughout the story that bring Italy and the other places described to life. What I liked about the romance part was that it wasn't gushy, we-saw-each-other-and-immediately-fell-in-love/lust. It was more real, love that's simmered throughout the years. The story came to a bit of a lull after the "quest" was accomplished, but for the most part, it was engag A sweet story about lost love. 5% in and she brings snickers: Nice! Add in Nonna Belladonna's remembered wisdom, sprinkled though out. I might want to read this one again. I loved this story. Lucy's search for her Nonna's past, returning a treasure and finding so much more. 5% in and she brings snickers: Nice! Add in Nonna Belladonna's remembered wisdom, sprinkled though out. Heartwarming love story A story of love and lost love, several generations, family's histories. WWII as well as the pres ent are backdrops for these involved stories. I enjoyed how they connected through generations and various locations and also the Italian ethnicity of some characters. There is much joy and also some sadness but an overall warmth to this book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Heartwarming love story A story of love and lost love, several generations, family's histories. What a delightful story A love story times two! What happens when your true love doesn't work out the first time around and what happened in the chaos after WWII. The older story is told in flashbacks. The tale of travel in Italy and the food was enough to make me hungry! A great find through Kindle Scout! What a delightful story A love story times two! When I read the first page of this story, I was tempted to return the ARC I’d been given in return for my honest review. Really, it just seemed too angsty – good heavens, it starts at a funeral! And it sounded really dark. I’m glad I did not abandon the book, it quickly veered right away from all my expectations. The tale ended up being a beautiful story of love, honor, timing, and how few of us are able to find the perfect ending. It also is a study in meddling family and achieving happiness despite circumstances – and bending circumstances, occasionally, to help others achieve happiness despite themselves. That’s a tall order for one short book, and yet it really delivers! Nonna Belladonna and Nonno Paolo are, of course, very old and very wise, but Jack and Lucy are just trying to make the best of the awkward circumstances of their lives. I think the strength of the book is in the parallel story of Belladonna and Paolo, when they were young and in love and not very wise at all. Their story illustrates to the reader, as well as to Lucy and Jack, the real worth of the second chance.

I read this book about two years ago and read it again today and it touched me as deeply as the first time around. The quest is not as easy as first hoped, but along the way they learn more about Lucy's grandmother and her love story. Although Jack and Lucy accomplish what they set out to do, the trip does not end well. Jack has to rethink his strategy to win Lucy the second time around and Lucy has to let go of past disappointments before she can move forward. Although romantic love was central to this story, it is the romance of Italy, of divine food and interpersonal relationships that draw the reader in and touches the heart. More than a love story, The Lost Art of Second Chances is a romantic experience. It is well written and carries the reader through the changes of scene between the past and the present, with tender gentleness. I loved every moment of this book and was sorry when it came to an end.

When Lucy's Nonna passes, Lucy is left with a mysterious bequest, to travel to Italy, find a man, and give him a letter and a painting. Her best friend Jack agrees to go with her. The book alternates between Nonna Belladonna's story and Lucy's story. I found parts of it a bit slow but it was generally okay. Jack is a sweetheart and he has a lot to put up with in Lucy's fretting over their relationship. My biggest problem was the inconsistencies and omissions in the plot. Paolo is an American studying at Yale though he goes to New York at age sixteen after his brother dies in the war. Why does he stay in Italy after the war and not go back to complete his studies? How did Lucy and Jack find him when they were just wandering around Tuscany? Did Lucy speak English or not; the priest said she was his translator, but it didn't seem like she spoke English until she got to the US. Why didn't the Germans question a young fit man being in the village? There were a lot of coincidences also. They just happen to find the one survivor running the cafe where they eat in Florence. And so on. If you just want some light reading, this is fine. I just thought it had too much fluff and not enough substance.

The second story I have read this month about the Monuments Men and the work they did in Italy during WW2. Apart from that element though, it was all a little pat, especially as: Jack’s week seemed very long; it was never explained exactly how they finally found Paoloa; there were just too many coincidences; and how the village came to be destroyed and thus forgotten was missed also. Only the church being burnt down was mentioned. Some good ideas but not completed in all elements. 3 (2.5)

Wonderful story of first love...lost and found, but sometimes too late...generational story involving Massachusetts and Italy...the love of a grandmother for her granddaughter who is more like her than her own daughter. The description of the Italian meals made my mouth water and there is a surprise recipe at the very end which I will attempt to make! Recommended to those who enjoy a good love story as well as a good meal!

I liked that this was like two love stories in one -- one from the past and one in the present. I could call this book missed opportunities and second chances. It's a beautifully told story of two generations, and fortunately the second chance for the younger generation works out perfectly for Lucy and Jack. It's a touching story on all fronts, but perhaps it's about timing and what is meant to be. It's a wonderful story, well written, and with characters to love. I highly recommend this book. This is such a beautiful sometimes heartbreaking story that gives you the perspective of two different generational couples (switching back and forth between their stories) that love didn't culminate in forever. This was a sweet romance that was destined from their childhood. Jack and Lucy were childhood friends whose lives were complicated by marriages to different people. Her sister in law married her best friend and she married her best friend's brother. So much happens in this book, but fate and a little help from Lucy's grandmother brings them back together as lovers. With complications, life has a way of making things happen. I really enjoyed the story of Lucy and Jack and how it is worth taking a chance. I appreciated learning more of Italy's history in WWII and how that correlated with how it all fit into the Belladonna's hope for Lucy and her dreams. It's a simple read and I was able to connect with the characters, which is a plus. I recommend this book for those not only looking for a light hearted story but also with an interest in Italian history and culture. I thoroughly enjoyed this book by author, Courtney Hunt. It was quite different from anything else I have read from her and, by far, the most interesting and enjoyable. Developing a story about different decades, different generations, lost love, and making it work in a story that satisfies the reader is a gift. Looking forward to more books with more detail and of character.

This book holds a lot of details of landscape among a love story or actually 2 love stories. It was a good read. Loved Jack and Lucy. The Lost Art of Second Chances by Courtney Hunt is a good book. This complex tale features two love stories. It features the past story of Belladonna and Paulo and present day Lucy and Jack. Full of drama, secrets and romance. A clever blend of history and learning to embrace love and to move on. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.
