I read Sara Gruen's novel, "At the Water's Edge," not this summary, but I couldn't find the novel listed in Goodreads in any other way than this entry. I enjoyed the novel. Having visited Scotland and Inverness a few years ago I also enjoyed the local references and the blurbs about the Loch Ness Monster. I shudder at the portrayal of the rich, spoiled and often times typically accurate characteristics of the Americans. Although, unfortunately, I have also seen Americans acting that way in person when abroad. Overall, a fun little read!

This. Is possibly the worst book I have read in a LONG time. I could only scan the last third hoping that some sort of redeeming value would be forthcoming but alas, no such luck. I cannot understand why a publisher would bother with this book. I now think of her as a one-time novelist who lost her way after the success of Water for Elephants. I could barely bring myself to give this even one star. It is hardly deserving of any mention at all.

I did read the book ..but could not bring it up on goodreads... great read ... three flighty twenty something Americans go looking for the monster in the Looc , during WW 2 to avoid the draft .. having to live in conditions below there standards with black out curtains no electric and food rationing has a major effect on the female of the group

A beautifully written story that continues to deliver from page one to the very end.

Did not like this novel as much as Water for Elephants, but it was an okay read. Very predictable story line! Good beach read!!!

A good read- loved the setting.

I read the book, but like others, wasn’t able to locate it in Goodreads search. This book was disappointing. The story and characters were very obvious, it was like being spoon fed. The “bad” people were really, really bad. The “good” people were really, really good. The ending was very predictable. Nothing was left to the reader’s imagination or thought. But, as with all books, I learned something I didn’t know before - Scotland during WW II, so it wasn’t a total loss.

I enjoyed this book. But it seemed to take a long time to grab me. After about half the book, I finally felt I had not wasted my time. I have enjoyed Sara Gruen's other books immensely. This one was slow. What I liked was the way it brought up the W.W.II and the horrors of Hitler. We should never allow younger generations to forget. Also, the book really picked up at the half way mark. I liked the tension and happenings between the characters. I was glad the way it turned out. Sara wrapped the b I enjoyed this book. I read "At the Waters Edge" but couldn't find the title listed on Goodreads. This is more a 3.5. The beginning was a little slow, but picked up nicely. Hank and Ellis are the epitome of the Ugly American. Maddie's evolution was well done, she was able to separate herself from all she had known, to finding who she could be.

UGH! Wasted an hour reading the first 45 pages - that was enough! Is it supposed to be a joke? The dialogue was absurd and the plot line totally inane!! The characters are insipid ninnies!!
