Hardly a week passes without some luminary decrying the exorbitant cost of higher education and the sorry state of the liberal arts. But none of them explain, in detail, how to obtain a liberal arts education better than that offered by colleges and universities–in less than a year and at a fraction of the cost. Most of my undergrad and graduate degrees involved technical education rather than classical, and I felt that I'd missed out on a lot. This book satisfies my need very nicely. It is a program covering typical liberal arts courses, and it has reading lists and requires papers on those readings, that roughly correspond to three semesters of undergraduate school. I'm very happy w/ this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who may have not had as much liberal arts exposure as they'd like. The smarts of a simple mind. So if you started stealing from friends and relatives to feed a cocaine habit Newport won't help you enjoy life without your addiction, but he knows where you can get it for much cheaper.
