Thirty-Three and a Half Shenanigans is book #6 in the Rose Gardner Mysteries series by Denise Grover Swank. It is no secret that I am in love with all things Denise Grover Swank and this series is at the top of my list. I love Rose Gardner and all of her adventures. It is no secret that I am in love with all things Denise Grover Swank and this series is at the top of my list. I love Rose Gardner and all of her adventures. I feel like this particular book is kind of a throw back to the first one. Rose is in more trouble then ever, one crazy situation after another. There is more humor and a little less angst, although don’t get me wrong. I have loved the push pull between Rose, Joe and Mason in the previous books! I have also been pretty verbal in the past with my love for Mason. I have been so frustrated with Joe and the mess his life is. But, in this book, Joe definitely won back some points with me. He also reminded me of the Joe I met in the first book. He’s more in charge and less whiney! He seems to have accepted that Rose is with Mason but I have to admit. I still get a little fluttery feeling when he calls her darlin! I think moving back to Henrietta agrees with Joe! Ok, now to the plot of this story. Mason is helping with the legal work of setting up Rose’s business as two separate businesses. Neely Kate, Rose’s best friend, who is also pregnant, has asked Rose for help in finding her cousin, Dolly Parton. It seems Dolly and a bartender from a local strip club have both disappeared but the sheriff’s department won’t take it seriously so Rose and Neely start investigating her disappearance. But their quest for information gets them into one crazy situation after another. And, I mean crazy. Joe and Mason repeatedly are having to get them out of trouble. In Rose’s defense, Neely Kate instigates some of the hilarious situations they find themselves in. And, of course, what would a good Rose Gardner mystery be without our favorite King of the Underworld, Skeeter Malcolm?! Yes, Rose is forced to get out her Lady in Black costume and pose again as Skeeter’s mysterious investor to try to help Skeeter find out who is trying to knock Skeeter out of business. At the same time, though, an attempt has been made on Mason’s life and Skeeter vowed to help Rose find out who it is that wants to hurt Mason if she will help him. Oh Rose, how do you get yourself into these situations? Joe and Mason have a somewhat tenuous understanding as they try to work together. And Rose and Mason’s relationship seems stronger then ever. “Don’t you know that you already have me? I’m hopelessly and unceasingly yours.” This particular book happens when it’s nearly Christmas so I liked that I read it at “almost” the same time of year. This was another fantastically entertaining installment to this series. I wouldn’t really call the ending a cliff hanger but this one did end with a lot of unresolved issues. DGS knows just how to leave us yearning for more of Rose Gardner. I can’t wait to see what she gets herself into next.

I'd like to start on a positive note, this author can write, she can really pull you in and write some gut wrenching story lines. I think where "Independent authors" go wrong is they don't challenge themselves to be better then their previous work. It's hard for me to give this negative review because I loved the first 2 books in this series and thought they'd get better...But this book was all over the place and made no sense at all. Readers if you've read her previous books in this series, you do not have to read this book to skip to the next. I actually really hate the main character now and I never thought that possible because in the first 2-3 books readers really root for Rose Gardner. But Rose has evolved into being more insecure then ever, righteous and ditsy. I got it at the beginning of this series, but it's played itself out especially after how many murders she's been through in 8 months and being "supposedly" madly in love with two different men. And again the author insists on this Mason character? Can you say snooze fest, ugh! I found myself hoping the author really went for it at the end with the burning building scene, but why when you can play it safe. I could go on and on, but I have to stop or I'll burn a script on this one.

SHE DID IT AGAIN!!!! How on earth do you keep reviewing Denise Grover Swank's books and say something better each time? This book is just absolutely perfect! Between her impossible-to-shake, tremulous arrangement with Skeeter and the hunt for Neely Kate's missing cousin Dolly Parton, Rose barely has time to take a breath in between each debacle she finds herself roped into. Rose Gardner is loyal and witty and the kind of person we all should have on our team. Every girl needs a Neely Kate as a best friend, and it will be way too hard not to compare future friends on their ability to hold up to Neely Kate standards. Mason and Joe are forced to work together despite how much each loves Rose. Denise has a knack for making each Rose Gardner book grab you, reel you in, then spit you back out waiting anxiously for the next. The story NEVER tires, and if she continues writing until "Ninety-Nine and a Half Rocking Chair Confessions", I'll be a loyal fan with every installment. Write on, Denise . . . I can't wait for the next!

There is a lot going on in this book and to be honest it really shouldn't work. Adding to what's wrong with this book, with the exception of Skeeter and Bruce Wayne, pretty much all the make characters in this series are less than inspiring. But Rose and Neely Kate are just such a whacky, loveable team that it's impossible to not love the book despite the occasional shaky moment

Aw Rose, whatcha doing girl? I am so happy with this book! Rose Gardner is one of my favorites and the last few books have been hard on the heart. Rose and Neely Kate are looking for Neely's missing cousin, as Joe and Mason join forces in a bribe case. As Rose secretly becomes the Lady in Black to help Skeeter learn who is betraying him. Just as much fun as each of the previous installments in this delightful series! Although a few of the threads weren't explained sufficiently for my taste ( Mason's whole involvement in the bribery scandal was only glossed over, as well as the continued references to JR etc..)The overall plot was sheer fun and Rose was just as quirky, humorous and endearing as ever. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I absolutely love this series. That being said, "Thirty-Three and a Half Shenanigans" is my least favorite of the series so far. As much as I think there was something missing that made all the other novels so special, there were way too many "shenanigans" Rose was involved in. It's not that I couldn't keep track of them all. Being involved this much, honestly I'm surprised she hasn't been severely injured or shot by now. It's one thing to save the life of a loved one, but to put yourself out there time and time again just becomes a little ridiculous. Then we have Deputy Hoffstetter, a female officer, who by the way is so unprofessional, who'd like to get rid of Rose and take her place by Mason's side. Seriously, doesn't Rose have enough on her plate? Not only does she have her sister to contend with, (view spoiler)[she has to deal with Henryetta's newest resident, Hilary. If that wasn't bad enough, in addition to what the local residents already think of her, she now finds out that she's been labelled a "badge bunny." (hide spoiler)] Personally, I'm surprised she hasn't sold her home, taken all her money, and just left that hick town for greener pastures. As for the ending, it felt like it was leading up to something really good, but instead ends with Rose looking into some new "shenanigans." I don't know, it wasn't the ending I was hoping for. As for the men in Rose's life, I'm still Team Mason all the way (and I love how aggressive he is in bed). As for Joe? Grow a pair. I absolutely love the series and like always, I can't wait to read the next installment.

Another wonderful Rose Gardner book! I absolutely love everything Rose Gardner. I think she is more intelligent sometimes than all the men in her life, or at least she has them all fooled. I missed not having a lot of my favorite man, Joe, in this one, but I definitely enjoyed all the shenanigans she got into with Neely Kate and the third man in her entourage, Skeeter. I do like the fact that Joe & Mason are getting along and working together. Eases some of the dislike I held for Mason, which is Another wonderful Rose Gardner book! This has been my least favorite book of the series so far. Mason and Rose's relationship is sweet. He babies her, and coddles her and it all gets a little...boring? What Joe and Rose have is different. Rose does actually cause some "shenanigans" in the book and she puts herself in the middle of some really un-wise situations. A great, fun read with lots of mystery and heart, and plenty of action and intrigue, this story is a great continuation or a great series. While nothing is perfect, this book is more than worth the price and the time, especially if you're as hooked on this series as I am. Let's start by saying that if you've never read any of the Rose Gardner mysteries, you should definitely take advantage of the current sales of the previous books in this series and start from the beginning, Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. Because there's a lot of background that will delight and entertain you as you work your way through to this story. Now.... Rose Gardner is the sweetest, strongest, most entertaining southern girl you'd ever want to meet. The people who matter to her are a wonderful collection of funny, sad, warm, helpless, strong, intelligent friends and enemies; together, they fill this story with terrific interaction with our heroine, great lines of dialogue, and an exciting trip from start to finish. The main story here is that Rose and her BFF, Neely Kate, are looking for Neely Kate's missing cousin. Joe Simmons and Mason Devereaux are working on a secret project that involves both their jobs in law enforcement. The two investigations dovetail and wind up in a conflagration at a strip club in one of Swank's typically tense, chaotic climaxes. Skeeter Malcolm, Fenton County's newest King of the Underworld, is here, too, and he's right in the thick of everything, making threats, providing information, and protecting Rose from all kinds of mayhem while at the same time creating plenty of mayhem of his own. Hilary, Joe's ex-girlfriend who claims to be carrying his baby (I have my doubts about that) is here to create just a tiny bit of hate and discontent for Rose. She's moved to Henryetta and is still plotting to get Joe on a permanent basis, which is what she pretty much always does. Hils, girl! He's just not that into you! Violet, Rose's sister, is paying the consequences for her betrayal of Rose and, while they're working on their relationship, things are not what they should be. It's still not clear to me that Violet truly, deeply understands the horrible things she's done to her sister in the past couple of books. Rose is right to take things slowly and carefully. Neely Kate, pregnant and learning to cook, has a much bigger part in this story than she has in past outings, and she's a delight. She knows everything about every person they come across, it seems, and her juicy little tidbits of information are loads of fun, not to mention helpful to Rose in figuring things out. Mason's mother, Maeve, has moved to town and set up housekeeping. She's there for Rose a lot, as she does some of the heavy lifting in her son's relationship by providing Rose companionship and insight while he's off doing his "very important job" as assistant DA of Fenton County. Rose has divided her nursery business and brought in Joe and Bruce Wayne - former pot head slacker turned landscape gardener - as partners and is getting ready to re-open after a disastrous Thanksgiving vandalism. And we meet Abbie Lee, a deputy sheriff who's burning a torch for Mason. One she'd seemingly like to use to light rose up and cook her to a crisp so as to have a path straight to Mason's heart. Given Rose's consecutive relationships with Joe - a former State Police detective and now Fenton County's Chief Deputy - and Mason, the county's ADA, Abbie has decided that our girl is a "badge bunny," a police groupie, and therefore unworthy of Mr. Devereaux. The action is engaging and the story is well plotted. The writing, as always, is very good. Swank gets better with every outing and her writing gets tighter and more involving every time she publishes. As prolific as she is, it's amazing that she has time to also improve her work, but she does. I'm never disappointed in a book by Denise Grover Swank, and, as in this case, I'm often surprised at how incredibly good she is. I love this series, and pretty much everything else this talented woman writes. As I said, nothing is perfect. I have some small complaints. For instance, Rose never mentions her dog, Muffy, without using the phrase "my little dog." After about the 15th time, I kind of wanted to scream that I KNOW THE DOG IS SMALL! Overused words and phrases tend to stand out and get on my nerves. A quibble, I know. Not really worth the mention, but I did it anyway. Another complaint is that Rose is very big on being independent, taking care of things herself, and being her own person. Laudable, to be sure. But the minute she lands herself in hot water with the law, the first thing she does is calls Joe or Mason to fix things. You can't have it both ways, girl, but again, a small issue. My biggest complaint about this book is that nothing happens. Not a thing in the overall, start to finish story that this series is telling is addressed. We don't move forward with Hilary's campaign to get Joe and demolish Rose. Nothing happens with Joe and Maeve, Mason's mother; in the novella that precedes this book, they began a friendship that just lays there doing nothing in this book. There's nothing that happens with Violet and Mike, who are divorced but might be working on that. There is no movement with Bruce Wayne, really. We don't even hear from Miss Mildred, Heidi Joy, or Jonah. How do you go to Henryetta and not even peek in at Miss Mildred? Mason and Rose keep yammering on about how much they love one another, but that relationship really doesn't evolve in this story. There's lots of lip service to it, and there are some life-threatening events that occur and cause much love-pledging and such, but nothing really happens to convince me that these two belong together. (Yes, I'm a fan of Joe/Rose and hope against all hope that they are end game, but that's not my point at all.) Every time Rose tells someone, or the reader, how much she loves Mason, or any time she points out to Joe (for the thousandth time) that she's with Mason now, it sounds to me like she's trying to convince someone of that. Whether it's the audience or herself is what I'm not sure of. Had Joe's father not intervened, Joe and Rose might, and probably would, still be together and at no point has Rose or Mason or Joe or anyone else brought that up. Which reminds me of another thing that doesn't happen. There is some suspicion on Rose's part that certain events in this book are the doings of Joe's father, a rich, controlling, manipulative megalomaniac who's out to put his son into the White House at all costs. But only Rose seems to see his hand in some of the events in this book. The men in her life - both law-school graduates and experienced investigators who are bright enough to go head to head with her - are oblivious? Really? Ultimately, while this is a fun outing, an entertaining story, and a pretty good demonstration of Swank's writing chops, and while it's a peek into the always delightful world of Henryetta, Arkansas, there's one main thing it's not. It's absolutely not forward movement. It definitely IS a clear set up for the next installment of the series, and it's certainly a good read, and that's really all it needs to be. It was just vaguely unsatisfying for a fan of the series, but that's not to say I didn't like it. Because I really did. I just wish there had been more momentum on the whole.

The story is divided between mystery, romance and the ridiculous but not in that order. The Plot:Dolly Parton is missing! No not her, Neely Kate's cousin. Naturally, Neely Kate calls on her BFF Rose, who has the 'sight' to solve the mystery. Nothing good can come of that especially when local crook Skeeter Malcolm is involved. The Protagonist: Rose is one of life's late bloomers, but she is finding her feet and becoming independent. Rose has the honesty of a child with all the hilarious consequences. She is a loving and lovable character who cares for those on the margins. Rose has the "sight." Naturally, the uncontrollable gift manifests at the most inconvenient of times. Except for the novellas, the Rose Gardner series held my attention to varying degrees. The protagonist has an interesting thread, one that can lead to amusing situations and overall the work is well written. However, I am now struggling with the series. Swank could not have more aptly named the book than 'Shenanigans.' It is full of horseplay and nonsense. Instead of Rose growing up, she has become clingy and finds herself in juvenile situations. That might be a discourtesy to juveniles. The latest plotline is an excellent example of hogwash. It involves Rose's double life with local gangster Skeeter Malcolm and being so self-righteous that she is less than honest with her live-in partner Mason, the Asst. District Atteneory. He also finds himself in a caper. And all this in a small town! The real mystery is how will Rose extricate herself from the bizarre situations she finds herself. Also in this small backwater is Natasha, a socialite who has moved to 'Hicksville' to be near Deputy Sheriff Joe Simmons. He just happens to be from one of the best families and is in love with Rose. So he too moved to Henryetta. He is also the father of Natasha's child. Although it's entertaining it, unfortunately, stretches the bounds too much in places. So it becomes a farce. It's too unrealistic and not funny. I really can't suspend reality as much as the story requires. It seems to be hard to take things too seriously when you hear that Neely Kate's cousin Dolly Parton is missing... but it is serious! I love learning more about Neely Kate's family and Mason... These characters get better with every book. Denise does a great job keeping the reader guessing as Rose and NK's investigations uncover many twists and turns! Great read! All the Regulars are back, including the Lady in Black. Rose is always looking out for the people she loves and this book is no different. Neely Kate needs help with finding her cousin "Dolly Parton" and a work colleague, who have gone missing. Its not the first time Dolly has taken off for a few days, therefore The Sheriff's Department is reluctant to get involved straight away. Now its up to Rose and Neely Kate to try and find her. Through Skeeter Malcolm, Rose also learns that Mason maybe in danger. To find out more, she has to work with Skeeter again. At one point, Rose states she is undecided between him and Neely Kate where she is worse off. After reading a few more chapters, I tend to agree. Skeeter is very protective of Rose, he treats her like royalty - but even this puts Rose on edge as the thought comes to her - "In revolutions, royalty was often the first to be beheaded". She knows that Skeeter will look after her and that he is a good aim, in more ways than one! Rose and Neely Kate get themselves into all sorts of a mess at times. The things they discover along the way to solving this mystery makes for a hilarious read. Rose and Mason's relationship is developing into something special so of course, Rose will stop at nothing to make sure Mason is safe. I took a little longer to read this book trying to savour it and make it last longer until Thirty-Four and a Half Predicaments due in April 2015. I just love these books. Before that release, I will be excited to read Denise's new series, The Wedding Pact. The first book is due in January 2015 called The Substitute. Can't wait for both books.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this installment in the Rose Gardener saga. It took me a long time to read & I had to really push myself to finish. I don't know whether it's because I'm all Rosed out or because the character took a huge swerve of a change - & not for the better. Rose seems to have become quite jaded at the start of the book and more than agreeable to the dark side of life. I felt that she had lost that sense of sweetness about her. This series has no fault, what is not to love about a kick-ass ex-shy girl who's done with everyone's crap and regularly gets involved in the criminal underworld or her seemingly friendly, country town in Arkansas? I love Rose's involvement with Skeeter in this, let's keep this up! Oh man. Well it was entertaining. These two ladies are a handful. Not to mention her ex the Deputy Sheriff and his slimy manipulative dad. So much going on. It was a wild ride for sure. I've really enjoyed the darker moments as Rose gets connected to the local crime lord. He's a curious man and of course a bad guy but he's so dang likable! lol And the romance. Oh man Rose and Mason. I love these two together even when they're having a struggle. Good people, sweet moments. It's just wonderful though has me nervous now and again as they try to deal with everything coming at them.

The amazing series continues! The story line is original and I love how each book in this series may have a similar theme (i.e. Rose gets sucked into some kind of crime story and then tries to find out the truth) but the stories are extremely different from book to book so you don’t get bored or tired of the series. Even the action, build up to suspense, and resolution differs in each book and I really think it helps you stay interested, and possibly obsessed. ;) Rose definitely gets into some s The amazing series continues! I think Neely Kate is starting to rub off on her too because you can see that Rose starts to pick up some of NK’s quick thinking and undercover tactics. This makes them three-dimensional characters and I feel like I know their own personalities like they are real people. All around, it’s another fantastic book by Denise Grover Swank!

I loved this book. I am a huge fan of Denise's writing. I first began reading her Rose Gardner series. I fell in love. I am a Rose hog. I love everything about Rose. I finish the Rose books within two days. I love the series! There are so many surprises in this book! I laughed, I cried, I cheered Rose and NK on! None of the main or supporting characters are left unattended. Each has their own background and storyline. I love learning more about each of the characters and watching them grow. The depth and realness of the characters pulls at your heartstrings. Denise's writing is so relatable. It is like you are reading about your bestfriend! We should all have friends like Rose and NK!

I honestly can not get enough of Rose. She is by far my favorite character. This is the second time I am reading this series, and I still had trouble putting the book down. Swank is an amazing author. Her writing has the ability to keep you guessing and engaged throughout the entire book. There were times, I found myself lost in the book. It was like I was listening to my best friend tell me a story of her weekend. Swank ends the book on the perfect note, leading you into the next novella. I can I honestly can not get enough of Rose.
