   One would think that horror writers could have quite profound things to say about horror film - about its intertwined evolution with horror writing, about the different tactics necessary for eliciting fear on screen or in print, about the iconography or horror film and how it alters expectations for horror writing...all sorts of things. But, alas, it seems that horror writers, at least the ones whose contributions editor Chris Golden solicited, had very little of any interest to say about horror One would think that horror writers could have quite profound things to say about horror film - about its intertwined evolution with horror writing, about the different tactics necessary for eliciting fear on screen or in print, about the iconography or horror film and how it alters expectations for horror writing...all sorts of things. But, alas, it seems that horror writers, at least the ones whose contributions editor Chris Golden solicited, had very little of any interest to say about horror films. "I watched horror films as a child" read the sum of many of these essays, or, in one case, "Filmmakers keeps making my books to film and doing it badly". Forgive my high expectations, but I really was looking for something a bit more thoughtful.

   A collection of essays that are not as much about horror films as the title would have us believe since most of the authors chose instead to write about non-horror movies which they believe contain horrific elements. Like the long-winded analisis of David Lynch films and how he has sold out. An entire chapter dedicated to the paranormal romance movie Ghost. Anne Rice saying how for her, a horror film is all about atmosphere and sympathetic characters. Some guidance from the editor would have made A collection of essays that are not as much about horror films as the title would have us believe since most of the authors chose instead to write about non-horror movies which they believe contain horrific elements. Like the long-winded analisis of David Lynch films and how he has sold out. An entire chapter dedicated to the paranormal romance movie Ghost. Anne Rice saying how for her, a horror film is all about atmosphere and sympathetic characters. Some guidance from the editor would have made the book a lot better instead of giving the authors free reign and letting them ramble on (a lot!).

   Yes! A selection of essays from many different writers, of various literary styles w/in the genre, looking at them scary movies. Juicy, juicy, juicy - get your high-stakes verbiage here - but often thin in context. Published in the early '90s, with the accordant bent towards movies contemporary to that period, which can get annoying depending on the author (and their assumptions about their audience and readership). Yes! A selection of essays from many different writers, of various literary styles w/in the genre, looking at them scary movies.    Eh, it's alright. Obviously outdated (pre-internet) but a few good pieces inside. I bought this many years ago from a bargain bin and finally pulled it off the shelf. I was hoping for a little more of the entries to talk about 70s-90s horror, but may of them spent a lot of time discussing movies that weren't considered horror movies, while presenting arguments why they should be. As most of the contents are now outdated, there's little value in seeking this book out, though it did bring up a sma Eh, it's alright. Obviously outdated (pre-internet) but a few good pieces inside.
