Arsene Lupin is the gentleman burglar who excels in disguise and always tries to steal valuables and a girls heart. Here is a new collection of tales which are mostly written by authors other than the original author Maurice Leblanc. These tales come from an era of dukes, barons and all the fashion trappings that go with it. Not really an era in which I feel comfortable. Many contemporary fiction characters also feature in these tales. Many contemporary fiction characters also feature in these tales. I recognized Sherlock Holmes, Bencolin, Flambeau, Fantomas and the Phantom of the opera. I do not really like stories where criminals like Lupin, Fantomas, Raffles and even Robin Hood are the heroes. I want my heroes to be good people. Lupin is at his best in stories where he is the detective, like in the book "The Eight Strokes of the Clock". Some of these stories are very tedious. Among the best are those by Boileau-Narcejac and Anthony Boucher who wrote good detective stories in their own right. I like puzzle novels more than adventure novels. Thats why these stories mostly don't appeal to me.

A delightful romp through the elegant adventures of a gentleman thief. I looked for the book after watching a few episodes of the excellent Netflix series. This is a collection of short stories and a play, I found that the play did not work well with my imagination but the short stories did. I especially liked some intersections with Sherlock Holmes. Most of the writing had an ease and sense of humor, as well as flecks of honor, which were very enjoyable.
