Very bland. Dec and Cari have a one night stand 18 months prior and he leaves before she wakes. She ends up pregnant and doesn't tell Dec because she figures he isn't the father type and their families have been business rivals for decades since their grandfathers had a falling out over their software co. He didn't sleep with the h and leave her for vengeance or to steal corporate secrets or anything typical of a Harley. He was just a horny playboy who didn't do morning afters. When they meet back up there is no big drama either. He even takes the baby news in stride. There was just very little conflict period. I had to struggle to finish. RE the audio. The narrator was very monotone, but the text was very dry.

This is an intriguing story of love, hate, business, rivalry, and a baby boy. Cari Chandler can't forget Declan Montrose. Her baby is a constant reminder of the night they shared. Cari Chandler can't forget Declan Montrose. Her baby is a constant reminder of the night they shared. Unfortunately he was gone by the time Cari awakened the next morning and she has been somewhat distraught since their eighteen-months-ago ONS. She waited a long time for him to call and it was months before she realized she was pregnant. She felt too much time had passed to contact him and it was apparant he was not interested in her or he would have made an effort to get in contact. Her disappointment, heartbreak and his thoughtlessness hurt her deeply. It did damage that I'm not sure she will ever completely get over. The troubling thing about this is that he never really apologized for not contacting her or missing her pregnancy, the birth, and the first nine months of his child's life. In fact, he said it was probably a good thing she didn't call him because he never planned to marry or have a child and he didn't think he would be a fit parent. That even hurt me!! Why not just take a knife and gut her?! Declan Montrose is Cari's family's sworn enemy and a no-commitment billionaire who, with his cousins, is trying to take over Cari's family's company. Something happened years ago with their grandfathers. They were in this business together and the Montrose family was tossed out. That is about the extent of the facts of why this rivalry began. The grandfather made his three grandsons promise to someday get the business back, seek revenge, and squash the Chandler family. They are now involved in a hostile takeover. FYI: the three Montrose cousins already have their own game company but they aren't satisfied until they put the three sisters out of business and take over theirs' as well...greedy much? The game biz is all the three sisters have so all three will be out of their lucrative positions. They may make a lot of money but they work very long and hard hours but they get no credit. The thing is this battle has nothing to do with the present generation but the three guys are hell-bent on taking over the company that their grandfather once had a stake in. To complicate this matter, Declan discovers he has a son with his family's most despised enemy. This would be his son's heritage one day but is that enough to ease up on the damage they plan to do to the Chandler sisters? He has been so pressured throughout his life that he feels he can't let his cousins down. In fact he decides to let Cari, the woman he loves, and his son down and stand with his cousings. So will he let down the only woman he has every loved and his son...or his cousins? Does there have to be a choice or is there a way they can work together. He can't have it both ways. In Dec pleasing his cousins he will finally feel like their blood relative. Dec was adopted and has never felt good enough to be a Montrose. His biological parents didn't want him and he was ignored by his adoptive parents. They just wanted a child they could bring out for family pictures and he was raised by nannies. He desperately wants to feel like he finally belongs but at what expense? Can this little guy, his son, soften Dec's heart?

My friend challenged me to a Harlequin read-athon and she picked this series out. I finished this book in less than a day but I didn't particularly care for the writing style. The thing I like about this book is that the business side of things is finally modern. Instead of hotels, resorts and typical Harlequin heroes' macho businesses, the companies of the feuding families operate video games. They talk about iOs and Android. Very fresca, haha. As mentioned above, the biggest thing I really dislike about this book is the writing style. Why? I feel really detached from the characters even though they have great potential to endear themselves to me. The scenes lack so much emotional luster, case in point in the disappointing announcement and reaction of the scene where Cari finally tells Dec they share a son. The "i love you" scene was very "meh" too. From a publisher known to publish teleserye-like books, this did not live up to that goal. There's none of the intense emotional drama I'm accustomed to reading in Harlequin novels. This is my first Katherine Garbera novel and although I didn't enjoy it, it won't be my last-I'm gonna continue with the rest of the series because I'm interested to know what happens to Cari's sisters- and of course I'm not gonna back down from a read-athon, haha. Here's to hoping the next books would be better.

I liked both Dec and Cari. She and her sisters have been running their company and doing a pretty good job of it, but they were no match for the Montrose need for revenge. With their acquisition of the company Cari was going to have to deal with Dec on a daily basis as the businesses are merged. Cari knew she was going to have to tell Dec about DJ but she wasn't sure how he was going to take it. She felt guilty about not telling him sooner, but he had walked out the morning after without a word I liked both Dec and Cari. Cari knew she was going to have to tell Dec about DJ but she wasn't sure how he was going to take it. She felt guilty about not telling him sooner, but he had walked out the morning after without a word and had never contacted her again. She didn't expect him to care since he had made it clear that he was not interested in any kind of commitment. She was really surprised when he was happy about the baby and that he wanted to be involved as a father. He also insisted that they begin to date so that it wouldn't come as much as a surprise when they announced that he was DJ's father. Over the next six weeks Cari discovered that there was a lot to like about Dec and that she was coming to care for him. She also saw how much he loved DJ and how he wanted to be a better father than his own had been. She also thought that she was making a good case for keeping her company intact as she worked with her people to make the transition smooth. She was floored by his actions at the end of the six weeks and convinced that they had no chance of a future together. I really liked her strength and how she worked so hard to try to protect the people who worked for her. She was also a fantastic mom and wanted to do what was right for her son. Declan was a man who was torn between loyalty to his family and his desire for Cari and their son. He was adopted and had never felt like he was truly part of the Montrose family. His parents had ended up not really giving him the love he deserved and had made him a pawn in their own relationship. As a result he kept away from any kind of commitment. That worked for everyone except Cari. He had never been able to forget their night together and was looking forward to trying to seduce her again. The news that he was a father caused him to feel a connection that he'd never experienced before - that there was someone else out there that was an actual relative to him. He made it clear to Cari that he would be an involved father and they would have to find a way to make it work. Though they weren't yet ready to tell their families about his identity as DJ's father, they were going to start dating and making it clear that they had a relationship. Dec's biggest problem was the fact that he could see what a big part of her business Cari was and that he didn't want her to lose her job, and that he knew that the intent was that she and her sisters would not be kept on. He wanted to do what was right for his company, thereby cementing his place in the family, but he also wanted to do what was right for Cari. In the end he made neither side happy and had to figure out how to fix it. I liked Declan's immediate acceptance of his fatherhood and the way that he wanted to be a good father. He worked really hard at it and found that his commitment to DJ also opened up his heart to let Cari in as well.

Cari was surprised at Dec’s reaction to find out he had a son. His actions after their one night stand showed her commitment wasn’t high on his list. But there will be no easy outcome with the takeover. His cousin wants to make sure no Chandler is left at Infinity Games but that would mean destroying part of his son’s legacy. Cari was a strong heroine who seemed to make decisions with her heart. She went into a relationship with Dec with an open mind and didn’t let past actions influence her too much. Dec was a complicated hero. Since he was adopted he never felt as if he belonged in the Montrose family, which made his decision about whether to destroy the Chandlers all that much harder. I really had a hard time with Jessi (Cari’s sister). She seemed very distrustful. Twice in the book she had people investigated.

The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets has been going on for two generations. Or should I say the Montrose family and the Chandler family. This dates back to some dodgy dealing between the grandfathers of the current generation. Emma Chandler had a one nice stand with Declan Mon...yeah...you get the drift, eighteen months ago and she woke up to an empty bed. Pretty telling so when she finds herself pregnant and he's nowhere to be found she pulls up her socks and gets on with life. Unfortunately the Montrose brothers have not forgotten the feud and when the Chandler company begins to struggle, they are on it immediately, ready for a takeover so they can destroy the Chandler legacy in revenge for the injustice done to their grandfather. Enter Declan whose job is to dismantle the company. He has a surprise coming when he learns about Declan Junior, called DJ by Emma. If you don't think naming your child after a one night stand is full of significance, don't bother to read on. I enjoyed seeing the interactions between Dec and Emma and little DJ as they learn about each other and grow and develop. Dec has the biggest learning curve as he's been avoiding commitment and caring for anyone other than his cousins since his childhood. A lovely story and I look forward to the next in the series.

When Cari tells Dec he has a son things change. He realizes that he wants his son and Cari too. Now he must figure out how he can have them and also do what his cousins want him to do also. Will he be able to make the right decision? Will he have any family left in the end after he makes that choice? You can feel the chemistry between the two throughout the book. You also feel Dec’s conflict as he is being pulled by family in a different direction then he wants to go with Cari.

So this reading "just to pass the time" thing doesn't always work out. This had the makings to be something a bit more interesting, with the family feud and the secret baby but it felt short. I didn't feel his change of heart or when he fell in love with Cari. Mainly I didn't see any growth in him. Too kind and too loving. There's only so much tenderness I can take before I feel like I'm choking with all the sugar. Anyways, this one is one those books I wish I wouldn't have started 'cause in the end it entertained me too little and bored me too much.

She feels the attraction, but knows things will get real crazy once she finally tells Dec about his son. When he finds out he's a father, he's determined to be a part of his son's life, even if he didn't think himself ready. He's also determined to hold on to Cari, but when their hostile takeover requires he fire her and her sisters, it doesn't bode well for their future relationship. At times, this was good. The anxiety over telling Declan about their son and the anxiety of Declan figuring out how he's going to balance living up to his cousins' expectations while also keeping Cari and his son happy (and hopefully having a future with them) were nicely handled and were mostly what kept me reading. The characters were likeable as well (except for Kell, but I think he's a character in a future story). I also appreciated that nobody bandied about the idea of marriage just because she'd had a baby. And more naturally the hero had to prove himself a worthy father (given his commitmentphobic ways) and earn the mother's trust before stepping in to be a father. I didn't (and normally don't) care for the secret baby situation where the heroine doesn't tell the hero that he's a father, but this wasn't so bad, since the heroine made very good points about why she didn't and the hero admitted that her judgement was sound. I really didn't like though, how everyone kept saying that Declan had abandoned them. First of all, he did not abandon Cari and the son he knew nothing about. After a night of protected sex, Declan left the woman, who never told him she got pregnant. That action does not equate to knowingly leaving a child behind. It's totally different. I also saw a lot of missed opportunity to go with angst, which was good, but not drawn out as much as I'd like. Cari vacillates between accepting the takeover and getting angry about it. And when she finds out they're all fired she gets all upset about it and rails at how she thought Declan had changed, when she'd already more or less accepted that they'd likely be fired and that didn't stop her from sleeping with Dec. So I don't know why she was so shocked. And after she'd been so hurt and angry, Dec makes one romantic gesture, says he loves her and she's suddenly all forgiving. He (and I) thought he'd have to work for it and he didn't at all. And then suddenly everyone is together and it's the end (rather abruptly). So really a mixed bag on this one.

The audiobook was so robotic (was it the next way written or was it the narrator?). They had one night stand and there was a baby that she did not tell him about. She was trying to figure if Declan would ever settle down. She has already plan to take care of their son on her own if Declan leaves her again. Declan on the other hand, has seen the worst of his parents' marriage and planned to stay a bachelor. AFter seeing his son, Declan couldn't walk away. Now it is a question, if Cari and Declan could put aside their family feud and to be a family for the sake of their son. I like this story even though the theme of the family feud has been told and retold. Cari is facing her abandonment issue and that her sisters might not stand by her. Declan is facing the impact his parents' marriage and that the fact that his cousins have never accepted him as a Montrose. Declan has to changed his attitude regarding his son and deals with his cousins Kell and Allan. I like the changes in Declan as he tried to be a father that Cari believes he can be. The author does show that both their decision regarding their son and future is also impacted by their families. As Cari has said in the both that if it was just them, their life would be simpler but it also involve the family. His Instant Heir is an entertaining book to read. However, the mystery remains is why did Gregory Chandler do to Thomas Montrose when they were business partners running Infinity Games and why. This will leave readers coming back to find out what did happen in the next two books of the Baby Business trilogy.

I was intrigued by the description and trusting Ms. Galen's comments purchased the book. Instead of writing the last few chapters of my book I took a moment to enjoy another writers work. As an author we rely not only on word of mouth but on the reviews of our readers. Sometimes those readers can be harsh and overlook a great story when they come upon errors in the book. To be honest when I read my mind had always overlooked those errors being so caught up in the storyline that it didn't matter. After getting my own share of bad reviews where readers loved the story but picked apart the editing I became more aware of what I read. So to those critics out there yes you will find typo errors in this book and to others who have commented about the ending and question what happened to the baby, he's there, he's not, he's back so what. It takes a lot to put so much of yourself into the books you write. Like children you give birth to them then hope they grow without much damage. You rejoice when a reader gets sucked into the story and falls for your characters and you hurt a little every time a reader takes a dig at it. This was a well written story where not only did you fall for the characters but as she developed their lives you fell deeper in love with them. You felt the pain, felt the fear, felt the loss and felt the joy. I am truly pleased Shana Galen introduced me to this author and look forward to reading more of her work. My advice to any reader who is considering this book, get it. Don't try so hard to look for the mistakes in any book but enjoy the journey the author is taking you on. You will not be disappointed in this journey.

I liked that he wanted to be a part of their lives. Overall it was a good read and I will read the other books in the series.

Not exactly my favorite. Why? Because both of the Hero and heroine are too flat. They got no expression, I mean the heroine was nervous to tell the Hero that she have his baby but that's it. The Hero, he just awed that the baby is his. And here, I was like, GIMME THE ANGST FOLKS! So yeah, overall good storyline but need more feeling. Not exactly my favorite. Why? I've read many "Secret Baby" stories and this one stands out as an original, just in the fact that Dec doesn't set out for revenge based on the fact he knew he walked out on Cari. Katherine Garbera did a really good job writing this book. Handled in a mature &unique style! Instead of the usual bickering& flinging blame, the story shows how the two main characters solves their problems, smoothly and to the satisfaction of everyone!
