Reading this, it was evident to me that it's meant to be heartwarming and sweet. But the overwhelming feeling I got was "twee and saccharine." Too much adorable eccentricity (to the point of no plausibility whatsoever), scenes that reminded me of Disney Cinderella and the animals (animals being actual animals, and servants), a tortured music metaphor, etc. Clearly I have a tiny black pebble for a heart, but I was more annoyed than anything. The hidden dangers of ebook sales and the websites that feed our interests. 18 months ago I bought a nook. Two of my favorite romance blogs (whom I won’t name because I don’t blame) had been featuring books on sale periodically. Early in the year, one ramped it up with daily listings. The second followed shortly thereafter with postings several times a week. I’ve been interested in reading more across the genre. The second followed shortly thereafter with postings several times a week. I’ve been interested in reading more across the genre. I love my Nook and the convenience of having books on hand when I want to read them. So I went a little crazy - to say the least. (Bought more than one book that I’d already read in hard cover or from the library). Plus I was downloading free ones and checking them out form the library. In December I realized I needed to stop the insanity. I vowed that I would read 75% of the books that I had purchased and not yet read. It’s been killing me with some of my favorite authors going on sale. The short point to this long prologue is that sometime last year, Ms. Kane’s books were published in ebook format and on sale. The descriptions sounded like something I’d enjoy. Historical. Pirates. Drama. Nifty covers. Oh, I don’t remember what possessed me but I bought five of them. Maybe I just didn’t understand my own tastes when I bought them (understanding what I enjoy and why is a work in process). Moral to the story, before buying a bunch of an author’s books read at least one to ensure you like here style. I’m sure there are plenty of people who like Ms. Kane’s books. I wouldn’t have been persuaded to buy otherwise. But her style doesn’t mesh with what I enjoy. I read the first book in the Diamond series, but slogged through it. The second I had to DNF. I made it through this book and probably enjoyed it more than the other two, but it’s just not my thing. I don’t even know how to rate it because folks who like her style will probably like this book. It drove me crazy. The overarching issue for me was that despite there being an underlying mystery and a bit of a conflict, everything was too perky and perfect. The hero and heroine faced some challenges. Both emerged out of unhappy circumstances that left them orphans. Yet every thing was so sugary sweet. Aunt Hermione who takes everyone in and has built her own menagerie of misfits. (I kept expecting the train with square wheels). The exceptionally perfect barrister who instantly realizes he must help care for them all. And the ever clueless heroine, affectionally nicknamed “Wonderland” (as in Alice . . . ) It was just too much for me. I’m not saying I want depressing books - but the happiness level and amount of “love’ bordered on the ridiculous for me.
