Huge and fairly extensive, this book contains a broad cross-section of poets and critics from the Victorian era, focussing both on the famous and critically lauded, such as Tennyson and Browning, to the lesser-known, such as Felicia Hemans and Gerard Manley Hopkins. There are a huge number of poems from a vast array of Victorian poets, and the book does well in graduating slowly across the full breadth of the 1800s, as well as in showcasing poets that people might not have ever read before. There are a huge number of poems from a vast array of Victorian poets, and the book does well in graduating slowly across the full breadth of the 1800s, as well as in showcasing poets that people might not have ever read before. Another point in its favour is the body of criticism which follows the poetry section, not focussing on the poems themselves necessarily but simply showing some of the poetic criticism from the time, and the issues most debated during the period. There are few downsides to the book, mostly because in and of itself it is simply a showcase for the works of others: the ordering of some of the poetry seems a little odd, not necessarily listing the poems as they were written by the author, but rather when they were published. Beyond that, the book is an interesting (if lengthy) read, for those looking to broaden their knowledge of 1800s poets.

This was a textbook for a course I took on the Victorian poets. It presents a good collection of the various poets from the era with historical background for each. While I've not read it from cover to cover, I kept the book as a reference and I find myself returning to it from time to time and just letting it fall open to a selection to read. Very good overview of poets from the period. It even has the entire "In Memorium". I just wish the biographical sketches were more thorough; they only provide a very brief paragraph on each poet.
