“One should open one’s house to strangers when it rained. Holger unlocked the door...” I still have goosebumps after reading Eviga Riket, a literary adaptation of Cult of Luna’s classic post metal album, Eternal Kingdom. This darkly bucolic, heartbreaking, unnerving and engulfing tale is just as harrowing and hauntingly beautiful as when I first read it ten years ago. Wether true or not, the story of Holger Nilsson cuts me to the core to this day, perhaps even more so as I draw closer to his age “One should open one’s house to strangers when it rained. Wether true or not, the story of Holger Nilsson cuts me to the core to this day, perhaps even more so as I draw closer to his age, when his tragedy befell him. Not to be listened to/experienced lightly. A rich and immersive tale in the tradition of Lewis Carrol, though darker, much darker.

Cult of Luna accounts for a grim soundtrack that brings up and deepens the universe of the eternal kingdom, a world full of dark, primeval forests, roaring rivers, odorless grass, globular eyes, magic drums and creatures of a bizarre kind. Eviga Riket enrichens the album Eternal Kingdom and offers a broader background for the music of Cult of Luna. On the other hand, independently from the cult status of the band and the previously unmentioned Mr. Nilsson, this audiobook does not result in a tale that will exceed "the fortuity of transcience". Furthermore, in her role of the capercaillie king, Guthrie lapses into what sounds like a very dull kindergarten teacher playing an evil witch. Luckily, the soundscape is thrilling and the text contains very enjoyable passages. The vastness and destructiveness of nature, for example, becomes an inspiration for visual poetry: "He saw the forest, but it was quite clearly a forest of a different kind. Lichen hung from the trees and tied up their networks of branches to form impenetrable lumps. The trunks were covered with mosses that resembled algae, as if the trees had been lying in the sea for years and years. Holger saw a vegetation that was submerging the old forest beneath it in its ravaging progress. He heard a crack when the tall spruce in front of the woodshed burst open and moss gushed out like bowels from the pierced stomach of a pig, gushed out and devoured the tall spruce from within, smothering it. It was the violent noise of a catastrophe that exploded from the inside and outwards." Watch Ghost Trail by Cult of Luna

I got this limited edition book because it sounded like it would be a nice companion to the brilliant eponymous album by Cult of Luna. The book design itself and the voice/intonation of the Swedish reader, as well as the soundtrack by the band are great. As I do not speak Swedish, I had to rely on the English translation to understand the story...and this is where it got really bad - I just can not believe the original text is as dull as the translation. At times it really seemed like someone used Google for the English version. The story itself could not be more boring - it does not work as a tale at all. The audio version is even worse - the aforementioned content is read by a woman whose whiny voice made the experience insufferable. I would really like to know if this is just an unfortunate combination of bad translation and a bad reader or if the original text is unimpressive as well. What a pity, I expected much more.

I did "only" read this book, without the audial input that is included. And as a regular book, Eviga Riket isn't very good, unfortunately. It halts in it's language and is clumsily paced, not managing to engage me as a reader.
