I'm reading this one for a course I'm taking on teaching comics in the classroom. It's a nice anecdotal pedagogical aide that helps teachers destigmatize graphic novel use in their own classrooms. in fairness, i'm not a new-to-the-craft educator any more and i no longer really actively seek out other people's ideas with the same fervor i did when i was in grad school and so very unsure of myself. i like that this text is peppered with student responses because it helps illuminate the concepts and I'm reading this one for a course I'm taking on teaching comics in the classroom. It's a nice anecdotal pedagogical aide that helps teachers destigmatize graphic novel use in their own classrooms. in fairness, i'm not a new-to-the-craft educator any more and i no longer really actively seek out other people's ideas with the same fervor i did when i was in grad school and so very unsure of myself. i like that this text is peppered with student responses because it helps illuminate the concepts and themes that resonate best with bakis's own students, but the reality is any given class could have a different set of experiences with those texts. an overall good textbook - nothing so special that i'd insist my peers rush out and buy it but a good general overview of how visual-verbal literacy can make a powerful impact in the classroom.
