I am going to be very honest and say that I struggled some to read this book. The writing was not the problem. The content really was a challenge for me. First off, you guys know I usually don't read a lot of books with heavy adult content. I don't generally care to read it and I don't generally expose myself to those kinds of things. But I had committed to read this one and I was going to see it through. But the truth is that the material hit at some tender points in my heart. But I had committed to read this one and I was going to see it through. But the truth is that the material hit at some tender points in my heart. The struggles that Kyr endured are somewhat universal, although the context may be different. I found myself extremely emotionally involved in this story and had to keep going, even if I would have wanted to put it down. So then, why the 3-1/2 star rating, right? Well, the first half of the book took a little longer to get going and get to the meat of the story than I would generally like, and that made it harder for me to keep going and took me the better part of a week to finish the novel. There were minimal editing issues, for which I commend the author, as editing seems to be a big miss with self-published and small press authors, so I was glad to see that that was not neglected here. While I was able to connect with the characters, I found the content very dark and very heavy, and this makes it harder to say that the book is a universally relatable story. But overall, the story was well written and the worldbuilding was spot on. The only other issue some readers may have is the language. I, with my extensively large vocabulary and well above average IQ, had to have a dictionary handy for this one. For this reason it may have read better as an ebook, where looking up words is a bit easier. But this is not a flaw of the story. This is a hindrance in the reader themselves. The story was well written and believable. The plot development and world building were excellently done. I would recommend this book if you are in need of a deep, soul-searching story.

Review to come ******************** I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads and it deserves every single one of them. While this is a fantasy book, it is also so much more. On the surface, this is a fast-paced read in a realm where evil has taken over and there are small pockets of rebellion fighting for their right to live freely, for things such as the air and sun and earth and water, they are fighting to bring back love and life, to unite the Goddess with their realm once more. The savior of this book is Kyr, a sex slave with direct access to the monstrous ruler, the Soul-Drinker. Working towards the freedom of the kingdom is The Circle, led by Rajani, a Warrior-Mage oath-bound to ensure that the Star-Seer's Prophecy is fulfilled. The Prophecy foretells that the only one who can destroy the Soul-Drinker, bring back the Goddess, and restore the sacred balance of the earthly and divine realms is the "twin-souled dark innocent." This book tells you about the prophecy, the sacrifices made from Circle members, what they "had to do" to ensure the Prophecy comes about, and then...Kyr's journey of self-forgiveness and discovery. I could not stop reading this book. Not only was the story fantastic, but you could see each little step of self-healing, discovery, acceptance, etc. It made you think about all of the stories you hear about on the news, all of the children who have horrific childhoods and how they, too, need this journey to be able to live fulfilling lives as adults later on. It's beautiful and sad and hopeful and inspiring. Can you imagine a world where we face our fears, take responsibility, and forgive not only ourselves but one another?

I'm not big on horror, and was a bit worried that the build-up of depravity that the main character suffers would be over the top, but it wasn't overly detailed, gory or in-depth which I think works in the book's favour. Similarly, I'm no prude, but I found the "sealed section" parts of the book tastefully done too. I know evil villains that are dyed in the wool evil through and through don't sit well with some people, but I quite enjoy them and think they were done well in this book. I enjoyed the way the story was put together, and found the unanswered questions left hanging very effective. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and very interested with where it will be heading. The book that was next on my pile to read was the Artist's Way, and so far that is segueing in nicely.

Dark innocence is, as the title says, very dark at first, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have mixed opinions about this book. It is very strange and dark at first, but is written well and has a good message to it. It is about a man named Kyr who was taken to be a slave as a small child to the "soul-drinker ", a vile man who lived off the emotions of orgies, torture, rape, and ultimately death. The Circle is a rebel group, lead by Rajani, a warrior-mage oath bound to fulfil the prophecy to free their world from the soul-drinker and reestablish the rule of the peaceful and loving goddess. Kyr's life after being a slave is filled with confusion since he is learning about everything that did not exist for him in his life of torture, such as love and kindness. This book is emotional roller-coaster, but the people and world itself are described amazingly. Also, the grammatical errors were almost very minimal, which is great. I probably would not read it again just because it was such a tough emotional read, but I'm glad that I did read it and would recommend it.

This book was very hard for me to gt through. At times the story flowed and I got into it, at others it was very slow or the grammatical errors stopped me and made it hard to continue. However, that being said, it was a great story line. Kyr was once a slave, tormented by the Master, and in turn tormenting and killing others. After he was freed he had to learn everything over. How t be kind, what a friend is, what love is... But how can he do that when he suns from a simple touch and blames hims This book was very hard for me to gt through. I am tempted to read the second book to see how the story ends, hoping it will be a better read

This is my first book reading Rahima Warren and I can say I was not disappointed at all. Dark Innocence takes you on a journey into the depths of the soul. Kyr's we see small changes in life that can make a huge difference. The journey is of self-forgiveness and discovery, that we see same sacrifice that are made to better the world from evil. This can be reflected on ourselves.
