    Fighting Fantasy Walks Like an Egyptian 16 January 2020 I probably should actually spend more time with these books as opposed to simply just following a walkthrough after I have given it one try, but the problem really does come down to time, particularly since the books at this end of the series do tend to be somewhat more complex than the earlier ones. For instance, as I have mentioned in previous reviews, you really do need to take a lot of notes as you go through this adventure, though one h Fighting Fantasy Walks Like an Egyptian 16 January 2020 I probably should actually spend more time with these books as opposed to simply just following a walkthrough after I have given it one try, but the problem really does come down to time, particularly since the books at this end of the series do tend to be somewhat more complex than the earlier ones. For instance, as I have mentioned in previous reviews, you really do need to take a lot of notes as you go through this adventure, though one hint I can certainly give you is that if there is a number associated with an object (or anything for that matter), then you can be assured that it is important, and is required to complete the quest. The reason being is that you will need that number to know where to turn to when you need to use the item. You could say that this is the ‘Egyptian’ adventure, namely you need to travel into a desert, find a temple, and kill a mummy. Okay, that particular mummy happens to be a long-dead king that some cult is attempting to bring back to life, and of course, when some cult is attempting to do that, you can be assured that nothing good is coming of it. So, being an Egyptian adventure, you know that you are going to travel through a trap-laden tomb, fight a lot of undead, and of course have to learn to read hieroglyphics (and this is a little tricky as well because the hieroglyphics that you need to read aren’t necessarily mentioned in the text, but rather on the picture on the adjoining page). Many have said that this is a fairly linear adventure, but I still find that even with these linear adventures you do end up getting lost. Further, because they simply use ‘left’ and ‘right’, it makes it somewhat difficult to actually map the tombs, and even more difficult to map the maze. Yeah, why are there always mazes in Egyptian adventures – it isn’t as if the pyramids actually have mazes in them. In fact, the Great Pyramid doesn’t seem to have a maze in it, and the layout is actually pretty straight forward (which is probably why it ended up being looted, but then again Egypt seems to be a magnet for grave robbers, both modern and ancient, though modern grave robbers simply seem to put the artifacts into museums). Actually, another thing I found a little confusing was that you start off as a tomb raider, or at least helping a tomb raider (though like most of these books, all the people that you travel with end up dying pretty quickly, so you basically do the trek all on your lonesome) and suddenly it changes to trying to stop this big nasty from being resurrected. I guess one of the reasons for this is because, well, we aren’t actually supposed to be raiding tombs, with all the trouble that this has caused in the past, so I guess the writers really don’t want to encourage us (not that we can actually do that anymore anyway – yeah, a lot of these countries will punish you quite heavily if you attempt to remove any of their antiquities).

    Back in 1982 Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone broke new ground with Warlock of Firetop Mountain, starting the 1980s gamebook craze. The formula of exciting and addictive gameplay, where your choices determine your route through the book, was a winner. For a good few years in the late 80s and early 90s I was utterly obsessed. Curse of the Mummy, by Jonathan Green, was the 59th and last of the series, published in 1995, a good few years after I’d lost interest in Fighting Fantasy. Curse of the Mummy, by Jonathan Green, was the 59th and last of the series, published in 1995, a good few years after I’d lost interest in Fighting Fantasy. It seems it had the reputation of being extremely difficult and therefore when the book was rereleased by Wizard in 2007 the skill and stamina of some of the harder monsters were reduced to make it easier. There are still a lot of hard monsters in the book. We really enjoyed this one but our adventure ended when we didn’t know how many kilometres it was to the mummy’s tomb.
