Thankfully Michelle Rowen makes her vampires have middle ground and making them pretty normal and badass. Then again what's normal now of days? Still a newbie vampire, Sarah Dearly is getting use to her new life as a vampire. With a diet of blood and a hate for anyone able to eat that tasty sweet treat. She's happy and thankful to have her fiancé and master vampire- Thierry by her side. Things take a turn when the Ring ask Thierry back for a long 50 year stint job. One that could put a real dent into their relationship. Not one for giving up. Sarah takes the risk for the guy she loves and decides to travel with him on his cases. Sarah and Thierry are in for a ride as they come up face to face with a child beauty pageant contestant, vampire serial killer, and Thierry past. Viva Las Vegas! Sarah was a great mix of tough and sweet. She tries to see the good in everybody and while she does get burned for her troubles. It doesn't stop her from reaching out time and again. Her and Thierry couldn't be more different then day and night. While Sarah is open and a tad snarky. Theirry is cool and calm. Hiding behind a stone mask that only few can see the true caring and loving Thierry. It was wonderful to read a well establish couple. The two play well off each other and you can see clearly how much love they love one another. While they do have their troubles it nice to see a couple work it out without either of them going off the deep end. Very refreshing. While the romance is strong, it's dealt a light hand as not to overshadow the mystery. It takes Sarah to the vegas underground to coming face to face with a vampire enforcer- Markus Reed and of course Victoria a child vampire with attitude not to mention glitter and sparkles! I thought everything that happen tied up very nicely over who the killer truly was. "Blood Bath & Beyond" got this series off to bloody good start. The next book in the series "Bled & Breakfast" comes out June 2013.

So, first in a new series is really a bit misleading as evidently these are characters from the Immortality Bites series. I kept feeling like I was missing something as characters mention past events and what not, but then I flipped to the cover, read "First" and just figured maybe stuff would be explained later. Nope. This really probably needs to be marketed with the other series. While I enjoyed it, I probably would have enjoyed it more had I read the series in order and knew about Thierry & So, first in a new series is really a bit misleading as evidently these are characters from the Immortality Bites series. Get ready to be brought over to the dark side of cozies.

The two travel to Las Vegas where they meet a child beauty pageant contestant as well as a vampire serial killer. Immortality Bites Mystery is a new sequel series by Michelle Rowen with the same main character as the original series, Sarah Dearly. This actually came out three whole years after the end of the last series, and I didn't even learn about this series until it was already over. After the last book in the original series, and frankly the rest of the series as well, annoyed me so much I was a bit apprehensive to start Immortality Bites Mystery. While Immortality Bites was a reread, so I remembered a little bit about what was going to happen, this is a completely new experience. With the new series, we have a slight change in genre. We've gone from paranormal chick lit to cozy mystery with vampires. I actually found the change to be a very smart, good move on the part of Rowen's. It adds a new level to the series that can definitely extend it out for a few more books. Rowen has also improved as a writer. I enjoyed Blood Bath & Beyond more with just this one book than I did for the first five books combined. With the new series, we also get a complete change of scenery. Right of the bat, her "best friend" who constantly was talking shit about her isn't around anymore, making it instantly a better book. Even then, she is still in the book, only we talk to her on the phone - and boy am I super glad she isn't around anymore. Las Vegas is actually a really fun place for Sarah and Thierry to be, too. It holds a lot of new, interesting things to show us. And we aren't always just running back to a blood bar. Though, there is still some of that here, too. It did make me think of Anita Blake a bit too much, though. Everything that happened in Blood Bath & Beyond made me think of Anita Blake. There is even a little girl vampire in this book, which really sealed the deal for me. At least this little girl is happy, and actually a little girl, compared to the alternative crazy vampire in Anita. Thierry is also way, way overprotective of Sarah. Sure, they're hopping into a situation in which he can't really protect her all the time. Yet, he wants to basically leave her in Canada and go off and do this for 50 years and come back. He wants to keep her safe by never, ever being around her essentially. He is such a lone wolf, has to do everything on his own. This is just as annoying as it was in the original Immortality Bites series. Yet, I also finally feel hope for the first time. I feel like he might actually be able to change finally. I have the hope they'll actually become a real couple! This is, a mystery. The plot plays out like a mystery. It wasn't especially challenging, and it wasn't especially interesting. But it was entertaining.

This particular case is about proving how Sarah Dearly's very old vampire fiance, Thierry, just did not commit a murder that he was accused of. Sarah is a magnet for trouble and that adds an element of WTF giggling to the mix. Seriously, her ability to stumble into the most insane situations is perfect for this genre. Add to the fact that she really is whip smart and has some common sense to boot--you have a great cozy mystery leading lady. The case is fun and really not easy to figure out. I was wrong about who I thought did it until about 3/4 of the way through! What I Thought of the Characters: I could gush about the characters in Blood Bath & Beyond for hours! Sarah is smart, sassy, sarcastic, stubborn, and all-around fun. As a new vampire she is holding her own around other's that are much older. Thierry is sexy in that smoldering, quiet, and over-bearing kind of way. He is a bajillion years old so you have to give him a little leeway in his "I am Man" kind of ways. Best character would have to be little 6-year old Tiara Queen! She cracks me up when she calls Sarah puppy! Her mix of child-like and adult qualities was just perfect. I hope she is in the books to come! Final Thought: Get thee to the bookstore and grab this book. I didn't read Michelle's first series (though I am going to now) and only felt a little lost at the beginning. I could tell there was a backstory but honestly that was only right at the beginning. This book stands on it's own!

Sarah tries to help him but sometimes her bravery comes close to stupidity and she needs a miracle that will save them both! Very enjoyable read!

I really liked this one! Apparently Michelle Rowen has another series of books with some of these characters, but they look like standard "chick lit" so I'll just go with this series. I do love my vampires and putting them in a mystery is just up my alley. If you enjoy the same, give this one a shot. RECOMMEND!

So, this is the first in a new series but the characters had another series already, which is evident in the references to back story. Fun, witty dialogue, good plot, good twists. I'd say it's a higher level genre mystery. I'll read more from this, especially during the fall since it's all about vampires, without feeling compelled to back up to the other series.

Two strikes from the beginning, apparently. 1. This series is the continuation of another series, and while you can read and understand without having read the other, I felt like I was missing a good bit of backstory. 2. Clearly, I am not a vampire story fan. Loved Interview With..., but haven't liked one since. But I did try. Granted this was an impulse read grabbed from the library shelves, but not my cup of tea (see previous strikes). It wasn't awful. I just didn't especially care for it. The story was okay and the action moved along, but I just wasn't that interested. Others have enjoyed it and readers that like vampires will probably like it, but for me it was just okay.

What a refreshing adventure! This is the first time reading this author and I am hooked. The glib persona from the main character Sarah Dearly is spectacular and comedic. Plus it doesn't emphasize gore or mention sex scenes. It's all about the story. Plus seeing our main female attract trouble - definitely worth reading. The analogies and example references are witty and clever. A joy to read especially when Sarah keeps landing herself into deeper messes - it's the worst luck or would it be predi What a refreshing adventure! What a fun book, and better than I expected! Loved this This book is awesome. I really enjoyed the story and the fact that the leading lady isn’t a damsel in distress but a bad luck magnet who tries her best to fight her own battles. Thierry is great as well and I really want to read more about the couple. The plot was great. There was always something unexpected waiting around the corner so you never got bored with the story. Sarah, a fledgling vamp, engaged to Thierry, a master vamp, is a trouble magnet. On a trip to Vegas, their afterlife happiness is out to the test. A vampire is killing humans every day, leaving them out in the open. Thierry gets accused of having another camp killed, and Sarah is sent to the airport for a flight back to Canada. Sneaky Sarah never boards the flight. She has to escape all sorts of trouble in her quest to prove Thierry innocent. What happens in Vegas stays in vegas.

More like 3.5 stars, as it was a fun little read. My husband picked it up at a local thrift shop for me, and I wasn't aware of it being a sort of continuation of a previous series, so I felt a little lost about some of the backstory. Overall all though I enjoyed it for the wonderful little fluff it was.

A good a humorous mystery. I like the plot. Sarah's fiance is accused of murdering a fellow vampire. Sarah sets off to solve the murder. I like the quirky characters Sarah meets while investigating. There are red-herrings and surprises. Vampire in Los Vegas just seem so natural.

Great vampire themed new series Sara and Thierry are a compelling couple trying to get their life together. When Thierry gets an offer he can't refuse. Mayhem, mystery and a cast of interesting characters are what you get in this new series. As a lover of vampire books, from Southern Vampire Mysteries to Betsy, Queen of vampire, I highly recommend this book.

Thierry takes a fifty-year job with a shadowy group called "the Ring," essentially a vampire counsel. He admits it was an offer he couldn't refuse. This job entails a lot of travel over that next fifty years as well. Thierry is surprised, and a little pleased, that Sarah refuses to sit in Vancouver, but insists on traveling with him. Beginning immediately with an assignment in Las Vegas to coral a vampire child beauty pageant contestant, Victoria Corday, that could expose the existence of vampires when people notice she never grows up. As soon as they arrive at their hotel they are confronted with a vampire serial killer on the loose, leaving bodies along the strip with fang marks showing on their necks. Then before you know it, another high-profile master vampire and old nemesis, Bernard DuShaw, is staked and Thierry is taken away by the Ring's top Hunter. The Ring's Hunter's are widely feared and it looks like Thierry has been setup for DuShaw's murder by an expert. Sarah refuses to go back to Vancouver where it is safe, and finds herself alone on the streets trying to figure out who killed DuShaw. While she is at it she finds a Starbucks blood bar and ends up in several dangerous run-ins. Sarah Dearly is honest to a fault and is genuinely kind to people. In this debut of the mystery incarnation of Immortality Bites, Sarah is challenged to find her inner courage and bad-ass. As a character, she is a likeable optimist that seems to fall into bad situations. Thierry is full of secrets and epitomizes the tall, dark, and dangerous vampire. But Thierry himself came across as a chess piece being maneuvered and I found myself wanting more from his character. The relationship between Sarah and Thierry is tested and the emotional strain is portrayed well without becoming dark. The character of Victoria Corday is a surprising breakout and is setup to be a continuing one. The concept of a child vampire who has a couple of centuries of worldliness yet is still a child is great and was written well. The Ring's top Hunter, Markus Reed, is a mystery on top of being a deadly vampire with a license to kill. He clearly has some ulterior motive, but we don't get any hint as to what or why. The ending leaves Markus free to appear in future editions. Las Vegas was good for this debut novel because of its nightlife and wide-open possibilities for characters like magicians and unique stores. The gambling or elaborate show aspects were not in evidence as part of the storyline. The idea of the shadowy Ring who employs hunters and investigates vampires creates a layer of sinister puppet masters that was more prevalent than the city for atmosphere. There were several things going with this and the initial assignment is the least important. The murder of DuShaw and the Vampire serial killer are more critical in the plot. I had not read the initial Immortality Bites romances but the necessary background was filled in easily. The story maintains a good pace and seemed to go quickly. My interest was maintained throughout and I just enjoyed the story. There is plenty of humor as we hear Sarah's commentary. The humor and the writing style make this lighter than I expected. The confrontation with the serial killer was tense and the wrap up was emotional. This novel setup the basis for the ongoing mysteries with Thierry's job having them investigating, as well as hints of revelations from his past, and ongoing power-plays with the Ring. It is essentially a cozy with a pretty good fantasy world for the paranormal framing the story for a series thread early on. I would say that the move from romance to mystery was smooth and successful. I am certainly looking forward to the next book in the series. Rating: Excellent - Loved it! I have seen the original book and the cover turned me off (seriously book cover makers or whatever they call you guys: What the heck? Your job is supposed to turn people on not the other way around!) , Jeez... Ok so, because of the cover and some bad reviews i intentionally read before i started it's spin-off (im not sure if that's the right word) series, it came as quite a turn off. But then...this book is AMAZING! i'm pretty sure i'll love the original...or atleast i try to convince my self i do. DAMN COVER MAKERS! SO anyway. This book is amazing! I just found another jewel and this will defenitely go straight into my favorite list. I wrote a review a while back saying when people tied the knot already ( Fiance, couple, or even GF-BF state etc), it becomes boring. I enjoy watching the chase. The process of falling in love and realizing he or she's the one, which is why when i read about the synopsis and figured the heroine and the hero are already engaged. I had my doubts. I have read enough book to draw a conclusion that when they are already in that phase, it becomes boring and awkward. But boy! Did this one ROCKED it! There was chemistry and love between the two polar opposite characters. Our hero may seem distant and cold on the outside but he's actually scarred and vulnerable in the inside and our heroine see's through he's facade. She accepted him and loved him and i can't help but swoon for them! “Nope. It’s beautiful, actually. Best heart I’ve ever met.” “That’s good to hear.” “Oh yeah? Why’s that?” His gray eyes flicked to mine. “Because every last shriveled and blackened piece of it is yours.” They are the perfect couple! I love them and i dont want ANYONE trying to come between them! It makes me go berserk. THough our hero will NEVER let anything like that happen...swooooooonnn Our heroine is wonderful! She makes mistakes and rush, stupid decisions but she is loyal, fierce, and love with all her being. She's selfless when it comes to our hero. I LOVE THAT! She showed she loves him and he showed he can't live without her. She shrugged a tiny shoulder. “Whenever you say anything, the rest of the world seems to disappear for him—like you’re the feature act of his sourpuss theater. Just a random observation.” Ok...Im sorry, i really am a hopeless-romantic. “To put it ineloquently, Sarah, you make mehappy. You make me want to live for another six centuries, provided that you’re by my side. I want nothing more than that—not since nearly the first moment we met.” I love a great, happy romance. Did i mention happy?... Yes, no matter how good ( i think) i wont love it until i get the Happy Ever After stuff So...Before i get carried away. Which i think i already have been, The romance was great and alive. The mystery drove me to the edge too. I was really excited about what our heroine would do. She's like one girl (she's 28 but 'woman' sounds really old doesn't it?) versus a hundred ferocious, red eyed, 6 foot tall dogs. Or atleast that's what it felt like. I, myself, was wondering what our heroine would do cause it will take a huge amount of gut to try to find our heroes murderer. Great thing she pulled it off quite nicely. Love this. Would love to have more of this. And id defitely read teh original series right about....now.

But when her fiancé Thierry takes a job with the Ring—the secret council in charge of keeping vampires in line—Sarah’s about to get more than a taste of danger… Being engaged to a centuries-old master vampire can be challenging—especially when he takes a job with the Ring. Thierry’s in for fifty years of nonstop travel and deadly risk. It’s enough to make any woman reconsider the wedding…any woman except Sarah, that is. Traveling to Las Vegas for his first assignment, they encounter a child beauty pageant contestant from hell, as well as a vampire serial killer leaving victims drained of blood, potentially exposing the existence of vampires to the whole world. But when Thierry’s truly ancient history comes back to haunt him, and he’s accused of a crime he didn’t commit, it’s up to Sarah to clear his name before their immortal lives come to an end. My Review: One of the problems with starting a new book is the unknown. Will this book be worth my time or will I spend my days dreading seeing the book on my nightstand? Well, that is not the case with Blood Bath and Beyond. Unlike the other books we cover on this site, this book (the first in a new series) is actually like a throwback to the Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Does anyone remember that show? It starred the guy who played Tron in Tron. Let me digress, this is a fun book with the classic whodunit spin in a supernatural universe that entails vampires living in the shadows, but also living amongst the living and being patrolled by a sinister and clandestine vampire organization. At the center of this world is the very unlucky Sarah. Yes, she may be engaged to the dashing, but heavily secretive, Thierry. But, that is the only thing going right in her life. Btw, why hasn’t anyone else used this name? I keep seeing Eric-named characters… C’mon authors, there is a whole book dedicated to baby names in the library. How about a Gaspard? Anyone? Sarah and Thierry go to Vegas after Thierry is requested to take on a new position in the secretive and clandestine Ring. Yet, their time is plagued with murders and intrigue. Part of the fun of the book revolves around how Sarah finds out the truth about everything that is happening around her. Yes, she may be a bit naïve and hopeful, but that is part of her charm. I also love that this relationship between Thierry and Sarah, although very detrimental, is possibly the sweetest relationship ever portrayed in a book series. There is an undeniable devotion and love between these two and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for them. There are other interesting characters in the story and they are Markus Reed, an enforcer for the Ring, and Victoria, a vampire that I will not describe because I think she was a highlight and I know you will get a kick out of her. I suggest you pick this book up, it is perfect for those of you who have long commutes or maybe not… I actually missed my bus because I was so wrapped up in the book. Oh well, it was worth it. The second book in the series, Bled & Breakfast, comes out June 2013.
