It's amazing to think that Shovel Shin was writing nearly 100 years ago. Her books are a strange mix (as she says herself) of Spiritual Law, the Old and the New Testaments. My favourite of the four books is Your Word is Your Wand which is made up of a lot of affirmations, more than the other three. Here is the law of attraction in an earlier format. This book is the complete wisdom of the metaphysician, spiritual teacher and artist Florence Scovel Shinn (1871-1949). It is THE book that combines the wonderful wisdom of metaphysics, spirituality and religion. A book, read ones, you wanna read again and again. It is full of helpful affirmations for all stressful and problematic situations in our life. A book that helps us to live a life by intuition and inner guidance rather than only by reason. Highly recommended book!

Written early in the 1900's, Florence Scovel Shinn's writings are still relevant. Her books provide a blueprint for creating the life you want and understanding why you have the life you have. So I have been reading all of these "Living life the best you can" books and most of the things they say are very straight forward and common-sensical but I think its always good to remind yourself of these points, because they are also easily pushed too far to the back of your mind. I found that during my daily routine at work, with friends, by myself, watching tv... I was constantly referring back to Florence's advice and relating her words to everything that was happening in my daily life. I found that during my daily routine at work, with friends, by myself, watching tv... I was constantly referring back to Florence's advice and relating her words to everything that was happening in my daily life. It helped to give myself a clearer picture of what was going on around me. Also, this is really cheesy, but she has some great 1 sentence phrases that are so inspirational, they helped me to think positively at the most down-trodden moments. I didn't connect as well with all of her religious talk and references to the Bible, and the book is a bit old-fashioned with men's and women's roles in life. But the underlying themes in this book are really simple and so true.

I dont believe in the law of attraction so I am not sure why I thought this book would interest me. The anecdotal evidence seems sparse and lacks substances. The "if-then" hypothesis are so flimsy. I think if you really want to believe in these things you will believe and this could bring a lot of positive affirmation for someone so inclined. For the rest of us skeptics we should leave this on the shelf for the others. I dont believe in the law of attraction so I am not sure why I thought this book would interest me. This is one of the original books on the law of attraction. This woman was ahead of her time. She basically says if you want it bad enough, then Believe you will have it and act as if it is so....

Florence Scovel Shinn wrote these in the 1920s and 40s but they seem modern and are certainly relevant. There are a lot of newer books that talk about saying daily positive affirmations, using the law of attraction, and paying attention to energy vibrations. I was surprised when I found out how old her books are because they sound so modern. I was surprised when I found out how old her books are because they sound so modern. On the other hand, a big, not so modern difference in her books is that she clearly believes in God, especially in her first book. She doesn't ask "the Universe" for things as is often suggested these days. She asks the divine and the "infinite" or simply asks God. She frequently quotes from the Bible. She doesn't believe in asking for things that aren't divine will. She says the law of karma, which is so readily accepted by a lot of people today (what goes around comes around), is superseded by the higher laws of forgiveness and grace. I interpret that to mean it is possible to avoid getting what we deserve and having hurt come back to us because of Jesus Christ. He paid the price so we can receive grace and forgiveness. We don't have to suffer the same way if we repent. No self help book that I've read teaches that these days. Her view of God seems to evolve in subsequent books after The Game of Life. She talks a lot about "the god within" or "the Father within." God seems less of a real, external being in the other books which might make her more accessible to people of various faiths. Or maybe it's just my perception and the differences I began to notice between her faith and mine. I don't agree with everything she says. She seems to believe there's no such thing as evil, that we create evil ourselves and that it's all in perception. She seems to believe original evil came because Adam began to believe it. She seems to blame misfortune and illness on the individual who experiences it. She says they must have a person in their life they need to forgive or some other poisonous behavior. I was surprised when she said a man who became very sick with food poisoning "called a poisonous oyster to himself." I believe that sometimes bad things happen to good people for no reason at all. We don't "deserve" all the bad things that happen to us. We may be able to benefit in the long run from some of them. We learn from many of them. We can be helped and strengthened through and despite them. But sometimes bad things happen because of being in this mortal world. It's super brief, so I'm barely sure I read she believes in reincarnation. She clearly read about a lot of different religions from which she forms her opinions. Overall, I really like the book. I love all the little stories she includes. Having faith and hope are strong, helpful themes. I believe in taking the good and finding truth in whatever source I encounter. This book is refreshing compared to other books I read this past week. A couple of things I learned or thought about while reading that I want to remember: *"Fear is faith in evil." (Fear is the opposite of real faith and comes from believing the wild, often wrong, imaginative stories we may tell ourselves.) *"If you want to be interesting to others, be interested in something." (Being interested shows enthusiasm. People are drawn to enthusiasm.) *Give credit to the divine. *Ask for things through grace and ask they happen in a perfect way according to divine design. *We will be blessed with our righteous desires. Have righteous desires and ask while believing with our whole hearts that we will receive. *Act with thanks as if you've already received the gift. Be bold and brave. *Negativity, criticism, and fear draw those things back to us. *What we think about and speak about have enormous power, more than we realize. *Say positive, receive positive. *We can be delivered from the "bondage of our Egyptians" (negative thoughts.) *Miracles are real and can happen today. I'm surprised this book has so few ratings and reviews. I don't remember what led me to read it, but I'm glad I did. There's a lot to discuss in this book.

This is a beautiful, simply written treasure. I call this book the original "Secret", as it delves into the spiritual and metaphysical world of the "Laws of Attraction". I don't want to open fire to it! but what it really is is a book of wishes and I daresay it is too unrealistic . Having a good intention and using the right words to clarify them and also expressing yourself in a way that does not harm is quite a good idea but the approaches introduced in this book , I believe , are not realistic , put it another way they simply don't work. I started reading these books in early 2011, and continue to refer to them almost daily in my devotionals and quiet time. I gave this 5 stars because I found it so interesting. I do not believe it has the answer to all problems in the world, but I do believe it can help with a great many. It's well worth the read, no matter what your belief system. I really don't know how this little book slipped by me for so long. I gave this 5 stars because I found it so interesting. One of my health practitioners recommended this collection to me when I told her of my interest in setting affirmations for the new year. There is a lot of good info here if you’re willing to sift through some vague examples of success stories and a lot of scripture. Find what resonates with you, for that is where the power is.

One of my all-time favorite books ever. The wisdom, lessons and principles that Ms. Florence outlines with clarity are wonderful. If I'd read this book a few years ago, I'd have immediately judged it as a bunch of "Green" bullsh**; but what Shinn is describing I believe comes from a much deeper place—an awareness of the relationship between how we make sense of the world using language and the world we experience. She constantly gives examples of surrender—letting go and aligning with a larger plan, and then resting in a feeling a trust and fulfillment which can't help but show us that what we seek we already have. She constantly gives examples of surrender—letting go and aligning with a larger plan, and then resting in a feeling a trust and fulfillment which can't help but show us that what we seek we already have. Furthermore, she shows an impressive ability to interpret stories as parables, showing us deep archetypal meanings and ontological truths about the interaction between epistemology and ontology. You may think I'm kidding if you just skim the surface, but I really got a lot of out of this book. Shinn's "affirmations" are nothing like the wish-fulfillment magical thinking of today's derivations (she was writing in 1925): "All things I seek are now seeking me" and "Every plan my Father in heaven has not planned is dissolved and obliterated and the Divine Design of my life now comes to pass are good examples.
